      Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay

      Glamping for sure

We have stayed there twice. It for sure is glamping with all the amenities. Pool, places to eat and drink. The staff is always friendly.

Be cautious about what sire you select. We had # 1 and it is so noisy that we had to by a white noise machine. The freeway is close by and it seems having a really loud car or a motorcycle id a thing there in Chula Vista. You will hear it at all hours. We had site #210 and it is the best, view, reasonably quiet. With that being said, I would opt for the south side of the property.

      Sweetwater Summit Regional Park

      Very pleasant full hookup sites

The campground is east of Chula Vista in a county park near a reservoir. Full hookup in part, water and electric in others. Well managed and clean. Allows open fires in fire rings.

Two drawbacks to consider if you seek placidness: the park is under the final approach to SAN (Lindbergh Field) and you will hear jets coming down to land from roughly 6a to 11pm. Second concern is ants - not just ants, but strategic and determined ants (spray any points in contact with the ground and ask camp staff to treat your site with diatomaceous earth to deter the bugs. It’s a free service.

Sites are very clean, level, have fire rings and higher numbered sites have water, power, and sewer. There are showers, restrooms, an amphitheater, water playground and sites with horse pens. It’s mostly sunny, with shrubs and smaller trees.

      Circle RV Resort

It’s OK for a couple weeks

Amenities isn’t all that great when they’re not maintained well. Gym has damaged equipment, pool has lose hand rails and heated pool is filthy. Pool furniture is outdated, broken and dirty. They will only play country music at the pool. The shower house looks like it has recently been updated but smells and has mold growing already. They do not allow any kind of camper except big rigs/trailers. They have a “dog park”, which is very small and smell horrendous due to there only being fake plastic grass. Most owners will also not clean up after their pets, so you or your dog may step into feces quite often there. RV park is between highway and main road - no quiet found here. Rules on what you’re allowed to put up for shade will vary depending on how much management likes you there. All in all an Ok place if you aren’t actually spending you time there.

Current update 12/13/25 The road is being repaved and resealed. They are also doing movie nights in the weekends for kids and have the occasional arts and crafts for them. For that I have added an extra star since there isn’t much for smaller children in general.

      Admiral Baker RV Park

Beautiful clean RV park within a park

RV spots are arranged in a horseshoe around a park with a playground. Sites on outside of horseshoe have to walk between interior sites to get to the park, bathrooms and laundry. Wi-Fi is good enough to work remotely. We didn’t try streaming.

Adjacent to the RV park are sports fields, picnic areas and a golf course.

The dog park is nice and clean and is reserved for RV park guests. The pool is beautiful and has a two-story tall slide. The pool is closed this summer and next (2022-23) but is normally open Memorial Day to Labor Day.

RV park is open to military and retired military.

      Oceanside RV Resort

For tent campers - pretty solid place for a quick couple stays

First, the campsite has the MOST CLEANEST restroom and shower booths I have ever visited for tent camping. This is no doubt that for those folks who are needed for good built qaulity toiletery, this will be your location.

      For the down sides;

      1. The trains - There is a rail right behind the tent sites so if you are looking for the tent sites with quiet location: PLEASE STAY AWAY from here. the trains do not operate from around 10 pm, back on operating starting from 5 am.

      2. for T1 tent site, BE AWARE that there is a dog park RIGHT next to the tent site: there will be a urine odor all over the place.

      3. If you are planning on cooking, just be aware that there is no proper location to do a dish wash. You would need some sort of wipes to do.

      Thousand Trails Pio Pico

      Not pleased

We will not return here. We live in our travel trailer/camper. Good things first: bathrooms are clean. The grounds crew and store personnel are helpful and friendly. Plenty of dumpsters. Reasonably close to the things we wanted to do/see in San Diego. Good number of shaded spots, if you can get into one. Bad things: we were under the impression that the entire campground had full hook ups. Only the south side has full sewer, water, and electric hook ups. To get a spot on the south side, you have to go through a complicated first come first serve/wait for people to leave/list/lottery/nonsense. Our check in was more of a hassle than a breeze. It was not mentioned that not every RV spot on the north side had water and electric. The sites are not well marked. It looked like picnic tables were moved so other campers would not be close. We couldn't tell how far we were on or off our site. Buildings are dilapidated. Camping areas are not maintained. There was a lot of litter that could have been raked up and disposed of. The North side of the campground is neglected. There was no obvious signage that the washers and dryers did not except debit/credit cards. There was only one place in the grounds were you could get a preloaded laundry card, and it was broken. The ladies at the check in station were very clear that a serviceman was called and they were getting a new contract. But that didn't help get the laundry clean. Several of the washers and dryers were out of service. It's a 10 mile drive to Chula Vista for services. It was made clear before our stay that there was little to no cell service. However, Lake Whitney, Texas Thousand Trails provided free wifi for all in their lodge. That is not the case at Pio Pico. This is the third Thousand Trails campground we have stayed at, and we're considering leaving before our full seven days are up.

    Guide to Chula Vista

Chula Vista provides a convenient base for camping across San Diego County with access to both beachside and inland camping options. The region maintains year-round camping availability with temperatures averaging 70-77°F during summer months and mild 45-65°F winters. Most campgrounds in the area operate at full capacity during summer weekends and require reservations 3-6 months in advance.

    What to do

Beach activities at Silver Strand State Beach: Located on Highway 75 in Coronado, this campground sits directly on the beach with easy access to swimming and water activities. "You can see some dolphins in the water and it has some great shells along the beach," notes Paul G. The area also features special natural phenomena at certain times. "Took the family out here to check out the blue glowing algae and they loved it," adds the same reviewer.

Fishing opportunities near Santee: Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve offers multiple lakes for fishing enthusiasts. "Great areas of campgrounds. Great water park for kids and everyone. Full hook ups. Small supply store on site," mentions D T. The lakes are accessible directly from some sites, making fishing convenient. "Kids loved the convenient fishing right behind our trailer and the swimming pools a short drive away," reports Jerry H.

Hiking trails at Sweetwater: Sweetwater Summit Regional Park offers various hiking and biking paths suitable for different skill levels. "Many hiking trails and bicycle trails," mentions Joni M. The park maintains a good trail system alongside other recreational amenities. For those looking for quick outings, there are shorter options too. "Little loop around side of campground. Nice view of the reservoir," notes Nicolas C.

    What campers like

Urban convenience with outdoor feel: Campland on the Bay provides a unique urban camping experience that doesn't feel urban once you're there. "This is plopped right in the middle of a busy suburban area but you could never tell once you're inside! It feels like you're miles and miles away from anything!" explains Shelene L. The campground features a range of facilities for extended stays.

Well-maintained facilities: Campers consistently note the clean, well-kept facilities at many Chula Vista area campgrounds. At Lake Jennings, "The campgrounds were clean. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The setting is quite beautiful," reports Paul T. Similarly, at Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground, "The facilities for showers and restrooms are clean and well maintained," according to Matthew D.

Resort-style amenities: For those seeking more upscale camping, Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay delivers luxury features. "Large pool area. Splash pad for the little ones, bar for the bigger ones, activities poolside and HUGE TV! Food service as well," describes one reviewer. The campground includes additional entertainment options. "Adjacent areas has a nice gym that opens to pool area, game room with pool table, scuffle board and poker tables," the same camper adds.

    What you should know

Limited privacy at some campgrounds: Open layouts can mean less seclusion between sites. At Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground, "The main drawback is there is no privacy whatsoever at the sites. The camp sites are right next to each other and all in the open. No trees, no bushes, nothing separating you from your neighbors," reports Matthew D. Consider this factor when choosing where to stay.

Noise levels vary: Urban-adjacent campgrounds may have noise from traffic, planes, or neighbors. At Silver Strand State Beach, "Road noise is high" and "no separation between sites," according to Michael. Similarly, Sweetwater Summit Regional Park sits "near a Freeway/Toll Road (not a terribly busy one) and it is under the San Diego Airport glide path for incoming flights," notes Baja H.

Early reservations essential: Most dog friendly campgrounds near Chula Vista require advance planning, especially during peak seasons. At Santee Lakes, "Something this nice you have to reserve at least 6 months ahead for nicest tree sites," advises Mike G. Similarly, at Silver Strand, booking well ahead is recommended for optimal beach locations.

    Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-focused activities: Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay provides numerous amenities specifically for children. "There is also a comfort station with a playground and horse shoe pits. There is also a nature center next to the campground that offers a discount to those who stay," one reviewer shares. The splash pad is particularly popular with younger campers during summer months.

Try unique accommodations: Several pet-friendly camping options near Chula Vista offer alternatives to standard tent or RV camping. "Really enjoyed the Tipi camping so fun! Totally worth spending a bit more. Very roomy," writes Rachel H. about Lake Jennings. These specialty lodgings can make camping more accessible for families with young children.

Consider proximity to attractions: When planning a family trip, think about distance to activities. Sweetwater Summit Regional Park offers convenient access to urban amenities while maintaining a natural setting. "The campground is freeway close and only a few miles away from grocery stores and restaurants," notes one reviewer. This balance makes it ideal for families wanting both outdoor time and entertainment options.

    Tips from RVers

Level sites at Silver Strand: RV campers appreciate the well-maintained sites at Silver Strand State Beach. "Sites are about 25 feet wide, mostly level. But no separation between sites," reports Michael. These spaces accommodate various vehicle sizes while providing ocean views from select locations. The campground is designed specifically for self-contained units with necessary hookups.

Full hookup availability: For those needing complete services, Fiddlers Cove RV Park offers comprehensive options. "20/30/50 amp power, water, and cable TV connections on the pedestals. Most spaces are back-in, but some are pull-through," explains Mike R. This military installation campground maintains high standards for facilities and utilities needed by RVers.

Site placement considerations: When staying at dog friendly campgrounds near Chula Vista, selecting the right site location impacts your experience. At Sweetwater Summit Regional Park, "These sites, 1-60 offer a bit more shade than the newer campsites which are all full hook-up. The newer sites (61 and higher) are on a hill and offer some good views of Bonita Valley."
