Best RV Parks & Resorts near Chula Vista, CA

Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay provides 197 full hookup RV sites with 30/50 amp service near Chula Vista Marina. The concrete pads are spacious enough for big rigs, with each Elite Full Hookup site featuring a gas fire BBQ grill, gas campfire, and outdoor furniture. Mission Bay RV Resort, located about 20 miles north, offers 260 year-round sites with full hookups including water, sewer, electric, and cable TV connections. Circle RV Resort in El Cajon provides big-rig friendly sites with 50 amp service, though spaces are notably tight. "Sites are concrete with a brick patio. If you have a pull through you get a grill. We had a pull through but no room with parked cars to get our 42' 5th wheel in - so we backed it in and it fit nicely," noted one RV traveler about Circle RV Resort.

Reservations are essential for RV camping in this region, particularly during winter months when snowbirds flock to Southern California. Most parks offer on-site dump stations, with Thousand Trails Pio Pico and Sweetwater Summit Regional Park providing this service for guests. Cell service varies by location - parks closer to urban areas like Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay and Mission Bay RV Resort offer reliable connectivity, while more remote locations may have spotty coverage. Highway noise can be an issue at some locations, particularly Circle RV Resort which sits adjacent to Highway 8. Pet owners should note that all major RV parks in the area are pet-friendly, though some impose breed or size restrictions. Propane refill service is available on-site at Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay, eliminating the need to disconnect and drive elsewhere for this essential service.

    Fiddlers Cove RV Park

Great RV Park - We love it!

Very clean and well maintained but rather small RV park collocated with a nice marina. This is a military installation so it’s not open to the public. This is our go to staycation place on San Diego bay. Close enough to Coronado but far enough to be secluded. 20/30/50 amp power, water, and cable TV connections on the pedestals. Most spaces are back-in, but some are pull-through. Pet friendly with disposal stations, and the park has a nice mini-mart.

    Short and to the point

It’s a nice Rv resort. Big rig friendly pull through sites. Went Veterans Day weekend 2021 and the weather was perfect. Short walk to the water, De Anza Cove. The beach is a dog friendly after 4 p.m.

    Fiddlers Cove RV Park

    Military RV park

Water front back in sites, pull through sites, other back in sites not waterfront and two tent sites. Don’t book with the concierge service. Easier to call the campground itself. Cell service is great and they have WiFi. Clean restrooms with shower. Water, sewage and power hook ups (30&50 amp). Small store and a boat house you can rent stuff like kayaks and paddle boards from. Great hidden gem.

    Lake Jennings

    Hidden Gem

This place is truly a hidden gem. Just 30 minutes from San Diego, with friendly staff and partial or full hookups. We were in a preferred lake view site#96 which had water and electric hookups. There was a play area that had ladder golf, tetherball, and ping pong. Have extra guess? Have them reserve a Tipi that has a max of 6 people. We had thee bars on our Version service and the campground WIFI is one of the best I have seen camping. Lake Jennings has some supplies available as well such as ice, propane, firewood, etc. at reasonable prices. Bathrooms and showers are clean. There is a dump station in the campground, and I suggest checking out the best way to get into the dump station before taking your rig. there are several roads around the dump station but only one that takes you in straight without having to make a sharp turn and possibly having to back up. The lake is drinking water for the local town and therefore no swimming allowed but they do stock the lake with fish. Just a long walk or short drive to the other side of the Lake and you can go fishing or boating. I would not suggest checking in early. The road in is very narrow and if you arrive before the noon checkout time you may find yourself falling into the lake while trying to squeeze by another on coming RV or trailer.

Paradise By The Sea RV Resort

    Amazing RV Resort Near Beach

A nicely appointed RV resort in downtown Oceanside with an awesome staff. Pull-through and back-in, full hookup spots available. Cable, wi-fi, a clubhouse with TV and PlayStation for the kids, pool table, games to check out, and a small swimming pool and hot tub. There are also outdoor community areas with ping-pong, bean-bag toss, grills, and other activities.

The resort is only a 5- minute walk to the beach and not far from Oceanside restaurants and shops. While it’s a tad spendy, you really do get a lot for your money with a great near beach location.

    Thousand Trails Pio Pico

    Be Truthful

I’m new to RV’s, and the lifestyle. I’ve been planning on full time RV living for the last 10 months. Pio Pico is the 1st RV park I’ve stayed at. I was enjoying my quite solitude, when my closest neighbor told me, one of the workers has tested positive for Covid-19, so I hauled ass out of there. Luckily, I didn’t have any human contact whatsoever with anyone there during my stay. I have bronchial asthma, so I wasn’t taking any chances.
Too bad, because it felt remote, quiet, and was only a nice 7 mile drive from grocery stores, retail stores, food, gas, etc., if you needed anything. 30 amp, and water at site. Dumping area with two stations. Nice paths to hike, or walk your dog. Laundry was open, but only facility I used was the dump station. I didn’t get any TV reception, but others did. I didn’t have a powered antenna, but I do now. The internet was slow and iffy. They said they were working on it. I got to see a few shows on Netflix, Hulu, YouTube... No cell service at all, but I did get a little with my WeBoost. I wasn’t expecting much with mountains all around. I would have given another star, but keeping something like a worker testing positive for covid-19 from customers is not a good business idea. I’d probably give them another try though, since it had the seclusion I was looking for.

    Thousand Trails Pio Pico

    Not pleased

We will not return here. We live in our travel trailer/camper. Good things first: bathrooms are clean. The grounds crew and store personnel are helpful and friendly. Plenty of dumpsters. Reasonably close to the things we wanted to do/see in San Diego. Good number of shaded spots, if you can get into one. Bad things: we were under the impression that the entire campground had full hook ups. Only the south side has full sewer, water, and electric hook ups. To get a spot on the south side, you have to go through a complicated first come first serve/wait for people to leave/list/lottery/nonsense. Our check in was more of a hassle than a breeze. It was not mentioned that not every RV spot on the north side had water and electric. The sites are not well marked. It looked like picnic tables were moved so other campers would not be close. We couldn't tell how far we were on or off our site. Buildings are dilapidated. Camping areas are not maintained. There was a lot of litter that could have been raked up and disposed of. The North side of the campground is neglected. There was no obvious signage that the washers and dryers did not except debit/credit cards. There was only one place in the grounds were you could get a preloaded laundry card, and it was broken. The ladies at the check in station were very clear that a serviceman was called and they were getting a new contract. But that didn't help get the laundry clean. Several of the washers and dryers were out of service. It's a 10 mile drive to Chula Vista for services. It was made clear before our stay that there was little to no cell service. However, Lake Whitney, Texas Thousand Trails provided free wifi for all in their lodge. That is not the case at Pio Pico. This is the third Thousand Trails campground we have stayed at, and we're considering leaving before our full seven days are up.

    William Heise County Park

Forest and Mountains just a couple hours from the city

Sweet campground with pines trees and a mountain feel. Table and fire pit at each site.

Hiking available walking distance from camp, trails leading out of camp. Family friendly environment. Can get busy in the summer, so be sure to leave it just as beautiful or better than before you arrived.

    Olive Avenue RV Resort

Nice new place, but very close and not level

We stayed here a couple of nights to visit our son in Carlsbad near by.

The staff was very welcoming and friendly, but the site we requested was never available according the to staff (not a big issue,  but for those how are big on getting what they reserve, take note).  There are lots of full time residents here as well.  Not sure I would call it a 'resort' … kind of a stretch and not really a destination location.

The park is basically new and well laid out for the size lot available.  Paved surfaces and well maintained landscaping.  We had a pull through site with full hook ups; it was on a cement pad that was nice, but the city made them slope all the pads for water drainage … a huge amount!  We maxed our our tongue on multiple boards to level off (note, the staff offered even more if we needed them). Regardless, the sites are close together so don't plan on enjoying a quite meal outside (truly for the pull throughs, they are meant to just to park an RV … the back ends in the corners look like they have more room).

When pulling into the park, take note there is a MH park to the right that the RV park owners own as well. So, stay to the right of the drive.

There is a pool and a dog run (it appears many dog owners don't pick up … argh).  The dog run did have large rocks making if difficult to walk and most likely clean, but it was well covered and lite for night time.

I would stay here again to visit my son.

Guide to Chula Vista

RV campgrounds near Chula Vista, California cluster between urban areas and natural spaces, with most situated 15-30 minutes from downtown San Diego. The region's Mediterranean climate creates year-round camping conditions with average temperatures ranging from 55-75°F. Cell service remains strong at most campgrounds near the coast but can drop significantly at inland locations like Thousand Trails Pio Pico.

What to do

Beachfront activities: At Mission Bay RV Resort, the bay provides ideal conditions for paddle sports. "Walking, biking, paddle boarding, boating, fishing all within the bay. Pacific, Mission, Ocean Beach areas and Bay Park are easy to get to by bicycle or Uber," notes one long-term camper.

Water recreation: The proximity to multiple beaches makes water activities accessible. "Great location right on San Diego Bay. Very clean and has everything you need! Large pool area. Splash pad for the little ones, bar for the bigger ones, activities poolside and HUGE TV!" explains a visitor to Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay.

Military history tours: For those with military ID, Fiddlers Cove RV Park offers a strategic base. "Very well maintained. Right off the amphib base. Must have Mil ID to camp there. Kayak, boat, SUP available for rental. Easy access to all of San Diego," notes a military camper.

What campers like

Marina access: The bay location provides nautical benefits at several RV parks. "Nice marina right nearby! Went for a quick check on some camping sites near us and it was very pretty for sure," mentions a visitor to Fiddlers Cove RV Park.

Pool amenities: Most Chula Vista area RV parks maintain pools as summer relief. "Wow what a place. This is 5 star camping. Clean, wide level spots and a nice pool with full bar and waiter service. Pickleball, playgrounds you name it," reports a guest at Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay.

Private off-leash areas: Some campgrounds offer dedicated pet spaces. "There's a nice pool and hot tub, laundry open until 9 pm, a beautiful chapel, a workout area with a rec room and some games, and a gorgeous and HUGE area across a small bridge and creek that had some disc golf and allows dogs to be off leash!" describes a camper at Rancho Los Coches RV Park.

What you should know

Highway noise levels: Traffic noise affects several Chula Vista area campgrounds. "Be cautious about what site you select. We had #1 and it is so noisy that we had to buy a white noise machine. The freeway is close by and it seems having a really loud car or a motorcycle is a thing there in Chula Vista," warns a Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay camper.

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies dramatically by location. "You won't have the best cell coverage but if your looking for a quite getaway from society this is the place to be," notes a camper at Thousand Trails Pio Pico.

Seasonal demand: Winter brings significant occupancy challenges. "Area may be undergoing big changes so we are taking advantage of one of the last long term stay parks in San Diego. Mission Bay RV and Campland parks are super busy all year round so you have to book at least a few months ahead to choose a site," advises a winter visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: Most RV parks near Chula Vista feature swimming options. "Great site right on San Diego Bay. Very clean and has everything you need! Large pool area. Splash pad for the little ones, bar for the bigger ones, activities poolside and HUGE TV! Food service as well," notes a family at Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay.

Recreation options: Look for parks with dedicated kid spaces. "The grounds are layed out great. Its located close to alot of attractions. We will be back," mentions a visitor to Escondido RV Resort.

Safety considerations: Some campgrounds have better security than others. "You are not allowed to setup on the south side when you arrive. You have to go to the northside, well from what I can see the northside section H is where most people head to because of this," cautions a Thousand Trails Pio Pico visitor regarding campground section choices.

Tips from RVers

Tight quarters: Several RV parks have challenging spacing. "Big rig friendly pull through sites. Went Veterans Day weekend 2021 and the weather was perfect. Short walk to the water, De Anza Cove," explains an RVer at Mission Bay RV Resort.

RV age restrictions: Some parks limit older vehicles. "Beautiful RV resort with short drives to the beach, San Diego, and casinos. Full hook ups, pool, dog walk. Little pricey and has RV age restrictions but I sent pics and was allowed even though I was outside the age," shares an RVer at Escondido RV Resort.

Access challenges: Evaluate sites before arrival. "We had a pull through but no room with parked cars to get our 42' 5th wheel in - so we backed it in and it fit nicely. It's a clean park and has a nice pool and laundry room," notes a visitor to Circle RV Resort.
