    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Camping opportunities near Johnson, Arkansas include several developed campgrounds situated along scenic waterways and forested areas. The region includes full-service RV parks like Prairie Creek and War Eagle Campground along Beaver Lake, providing waterfront access for boating enthusiasts. Devil's Den State Park Campground, located approximately 20 miles southwest of Johnson in West Fork, offers tent sites, RV hookups and cabin accommodations within its forested setting. For travelers seeking amenities, The Creeks Golf & RV Resort and Southgate RV Park of Fayetteville provide full hookups and proximity to urban conveniences.

Most campgrounds in the Johnson area remain open year-round, though primitive camping areas may have seasonal restrictions. Many developed campgrounds require reservations, particularly during summer months and University of Arkansas football weekends when availability becomes limited. The region experiences four distinct seasons with hot, humid summers and mild winters, though occasional ice storms can affect winter travel. Several campgrounds offer varying levels of hookups, from primitive tent sites to full RV connections with 50-amp service. Access roads are generally well-maintained, though some campgrounds like War Eagle require navigation along winding rural routes. A visitor noted: "War Eagle Campground is on the less popular side of the lake so it's usually more quiet and has fewer people camping than sites like Hickory Creek, Prairie Creek, and Horseshoe Bend."

Campers frequently mention the scenic waterfront locations as highlights of camping in this region. Beaver Lake access points provide opportunities for swimming, fishing and boating directly from several campgrounds. Reviews indicate high satisfaction with the natural settings, particularly at Devil's Den State Park where hiking trails connect directly to campsites. Several visitors highlighted the variety of accommodation options, from tent camping to fully-equipped cabins. A recent review described The Creeks Golf & RV Resort as "nice and clean, management is helpful, and discounts on the golf." While some developed campgrounds feature modern amenities including showers and laundry facilities, others maintain a more rustic atmosphere with basic facilities and greater privacy, allowing campers to choose their preferred camping experience.

      Roaring River State Park Campground

      Accessible and lots to do

We stopped for the night while passing through MO. Tons of spots open on a Monday in August. Cindy at the park office was so friendly and helpful. She suggested spot 100 in campground 2 since it backs onto the river. Lovely sounds! Lots of trout in the river - at that spot, it’s only about 1 foot deep so it was fun to wade in the water and let the pup run around.

Good park store, dump station, trash and lots of hikes to do. Too bad we simply stayed the night

Lake Fort Smith State Park Campground

Site 16 - little piece of paradise

Very nice park - clean and quiet. We did the kayak tour this morning which was nice. There’s also a kayak rental Kiosk down by the boat ramp through Whenever Watersports (download the app). There’s trails and also a pool. Pool closed down Aug 9, 2026 since lifeguards had to go back to school. Not having a pool was the only bummer this trip cause temps are still close to 100.

Kettle Campground, Cabins & RV Park

Quiet, Lots of trees, Swimming Pool

This is a cute campground with lots of trees for shade. This is my first camping experience and I’m impressed. Most of the campers seem to be long term residents who don’t make a lot of noise. I chose this one because the camp sites were wooded not parking lot fashion. Sewage hook up right at your site. Air conditioned laundry. Nice owners very accommodating. The pool is clean and a great way to cool off. Shower house a little dated but clean. It’s right on 62 and you can catch a trolly for 6$ a day for a full day of rides in eureka. The highway next to it kind of dangerous for an ebike but I just bought a month pass for 26$ My site seemed almost double in size. I started at 17 which seemed tight to get into.

      Regatta On Grand

      First Class Resort

Registration is totally online- you register, pay, and check in online. You will receive a text message the morning of your arrival day asking you to provide an ETA. You will be assigned a concierge who will meet you when you arrive and escort you to your site.

All the park and on-site restaurant staff we dealt with were very friendly and helpful. The entrance to the resort is directly off the main road and is easy to navigate for any size rig. The same inside the park; it's well-marked and easy to navigate.

We were assigned to pull-thru site number S-6. All sites had concrete pads, and they all appear to be fairly level. Power, Water, and Sewer were all conveniently located, and the power supply had no issues at all. We use a power management system, and all electrical parameters were spot on during our stay. Water pressure was very good, and the in-ground sewer connection was conveniently located. Bathrooms, showers, and a laundry area aren't available, although both restaurants on the property do have bathrooms for their customers.

Wi-Fi, Satellite, Cable, and OTA: there is no Wi-Fi in the park. We were able to get AT&T 5G with 4 bars. AT&T achieved 399 Mbps down and 10.6 Mbps up. Satellite reception should not be an issue at most sites, as you can move your dish around to an open area on your site. There are plenty of OTA stations available, and they all had great reception with clear HD pictures. Cable was not available.

Dog Park: They have a nice fenced-in park that is in great condition. The park has a covered bench, and they also provide doggie bags and a trash can.

Amenities: Lots of items are listed on their website, and you are only a few miles from area stores and restaurants. Summary: A great place for an overnight or an extended stay, even if they don't have the normal RV park amenities like showers, bathrooms, or a laundry area

      A beautiful view

A beautiful place to relax, but very sketchy, wouldn't stay after dark. I've taken many pics down here, the scenery is beautiful.

      pathfinder rv resort

      New, clean RV park

New park with young trees (so not much shade yet), pond for fishing and a walking trail around it. Large clubhouse is where the bathhouses are with four individual bathrooms with showers, laundry facility, propane for sale and a nice pool.

      Beautiful and peaceful

Clean state park. We enjoyed the trails, kayak rental at the marina. Other amenities include nice bathhouses and a pool.

Hog Valley RV & Treehouse Resort

      Still a nice park, but...

We last stayed here five years ago when the park was new. Some of the areas and amenities that are now available were still under construction during our last trip. The bottom line… still a very nice park, but it's starting to show its age a little.

Parking for registration is located right next to the office. All the park staff we dealt with were very friendly and helpful. The road from the highway to the park is easy to navigate for any size rig. The same inside the park; it's well-marked and easy to navigate, though several roads have asphalt failures that need attention. Even though it's not too far from Interstate 49, we didn't hear any traffic noise at all- very peaceful.

We were assigned to pull-thru site number 36. Most of the sites are gravel, but the pull-thru row that we were in had concrete pads. For the most part, all sites appear fairly level.

Power, Water, and Sewer were all conveniently located, and the power supply had no issues at all. We use a power management system, and all electrical parameters were spot on during our stay. Water pressure was very good, and the in-ground sewer connection was conveniently located.

Two bathroom areas also have showers and laundry facilities- one at the front of the park and one in the rear. The pool area and playground are located at the front of the park.

Wi-Fi, Satellite, Cable, and OTA: there is Wi-Fi in the park, but the park info sheet that they provide you with notes that the Wi-Fi is spotty. We were able to get AT&T 5G with 4 bars. AT&T achieved 418 Mbps down and 21 Mbps up. Satellite reception should not be an issue at most sites, and if you do need clear access for satellite reception, there are plenty of sites available with no trees. There are plenty of OTA stations available, and they all had great reception with clear HD pictures. Cable was not available.

Dog Park: They have two nice fenced-in parks that are in great condition. The one in the front of the park is divided for big and small dogs, while the one in the back is larger but not divided. They both have benches, which are all in good shape. They also provide doggie bags and a trash can. NOTE: I've included a photo of the sign posted at the entrances to the park indicating that they might be shut down. So if having a fenced dog park is mission-critical for your stay, you might want to verify that they are still open when you make your reservation

Amenities: Lots of items are listed on their website, and you are only a few miles from Fayetteville, where you can find plenty of stores and restaurants. Summary: A great place for an overnight or an extended stay. Although the park is starting to show its age, it still deserves a high rating, and I would not hesitate to recommend it- enjoy your stay!

      Wolf Pen Recreation Area Campground

      It Was Ok

Very flea infested when we went. Water was really low and kinda hot. But the camp ground was pretty and well maintained.

    Guide to Johnson

Dispersed camping near Johnson, Arkansas offers varied terrain across elevations from 900 to 1,700 feet within the Ozark Mountains. Seasonal temperature variations create distinct camping conditions, with summer highs averaging 85-95°F and winter lows frequently dropping below freezing. Most camping areas maintain accessible gravel roads, though some remote locations require high-clearance vehicles during wet weather.

    What to do

Disc golf adventures: Natural Falls State Park Campground features an extensive 18-hole course through wooded terrain. A visitor noted, "Love this campground so much. Great spots with really level pads set in a beautifully treed park. Surrounded by disc golf, waterfalls, and hiking."

Creek exploration: Devil's Den State Park offers creek access directly from camping areas. One camper shared, "My favorite camping spot yet. Aside from the extreme humidity this was a great family getaway. Pool, great trails, and the creek/river kept my kids entertained and worn out!"

Lakeside fishing: Hickory Creek - Beaver Lake provides direct lake access for anglers. As one visitor confirmed, "Great fishing.....nice clean campground....friendly people."

Hiking trails: Lake Wedington offers a scenic 1.5-mile trail around the lake. A camper commented, "The hike around the lake is roughly 1.5 miles and beautiful," while another mentioned, "There are great hiking trails in wooded hills on either side of the campground."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: War Eagle Campground provides good separation at most sites. A visitor explained, "There only 26 sites in this whole campground. All of them had ample shade but site #2. Sites #1 - #5 are at the top of the hill and pretty level."

Waterfront access: Prairie Creek offers multiple sites with direct lake views. One camper noted, "Those near the water seem to have short pads and electric only. I never was able to get our TT level at site 92. Over 8" difference from side to side."

Modern facilities: Horseshoe Bend Rec Area & Campground maintains multiple bathhouses and amenities. A visitor detailed, "Very well-maintained. Gorgeous lake with lots of lakefront sites. Several bathhouses. Some with vault toilets but some with flush toilets and showers."

Trail connections: Devil's Den State Park provides direct trail access from campsites. A reviewer advised, "I highly suggest hiking the Yellow Rock trail just outside of the campground. The large rock 'mountain' it leads you too are so much fun to play on."

    What you should know

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the area have uneven terrain. At Hickory Creek, a camper warned, "Site 23 is very un-level. Water holds right where you come out of your camper, therefore, you are stepping into a mud hole each time you enter and exit your camper."

Limited bathroom facilities: Lake Wedington has basic amenities only. A camper reported, "It is relatively primitive with the bathrooms in need of being updated but they were functional."

Seasonal closures: Blowing Springs RV Park & Campsites maintains different access depending on rainfall. One visitor noted, "Campground is currently (April 7) closed for maintenance and flooding. Call before you go!"

Variable water hookups: Many sites lack direct water connections. A Prairie Creek visitor mentioned, "Campsites come with various services so check yours to ensure you have what you need. Some have no services, some with electric only, all the way up to full services."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Horseshoe Bend features dedicated children's areas. A visitor shared, "Great family Corp campground. Some sites have electric and water some just electric. Great for walking, riding bikes. And walking the dog."

Swimming options: Devil's Den State Park offers swimming facilities for hot days. One parent mentioned, "Pool, great trails, and the creek/river kept my kids entertained and worn out! This was a great family getaway."

Holiday activities: The Creeks Golf & RV Resort provides seasonal events throughout the year. According to a reviewer at Horseshoe Bend, "Last Saturday weekend in October people decorate there sites and kids trick or treat the campers."

Educational opportunities: Natural Falls State Park offers accessible trails for all abilities. A visitor explained, "You can take your wheelchair on some of the trails and look at the Falls. There's a steep hike down to the falls for those who can walk it."

    Tips from RVers

Arrival planning: Select proper routes for larger vehicles. A Hickory Creek visitor advised, "Instructions on the Dyrt say to turn down Cow Face Road. I would stay on highway 264 to come into the campground as that road is quite a bit wider and not quite so curvy and hilly."

Power requirements: Check site-specific electrical limitations. An RVer at War Eagle Campground noted, "The electric at our site was way in front of the camper, about the distance of the front, right bumper of our truck. We had to go by a $50 extension cord to even hook up."

Water management: Most sites require self-contained water. At Horseshoe Bend, a camper mentioned, "Sites have electric but not water so fill your tank before you come. Due to this site being in-level, you will lose water."

Reservation timing: University activities affect availability. One camper at The Creeks Golf & RV Resort explained, "I've been coming here for years now. They have monthly spots available and also weekly/nightly rates. About 1/3 are full timers."
