Wisconsin's eastern shore along Lake Michigan offers well-maintained camping opportunities with sites typically ranging from 30-50 feet in depth. Oostburg sits near several state forests and parks that feature glacial terrain from the last ice age, with rolling kettle moraine formations creating diverse camping landscapes. Winter temperatures typically range from 10-30°F while summer months average 65-85°F, making late spring through early fall the prime camping season.
What to do
Beach activities at Lake Michigan: At Kohler-Andrae State Park, visitors enjoy swimming and beachcombing along the shoreline. "Right on Lake Michigan, had nice and clean beaches. Campsites are a nice-not the most private but its a big park, and the facilities are stocked and clean. Hiking trails are great, especially the ones through the dunes," notes Elliot Q.
Explore glacial formations: The Ice Age Trail passes through several dog friendly campgrounds near Oostburg, offering opportunities to see unique kettle formations. "The Ice Age trail comes through the forest and makes for some nice hiking," comments Amy F. about the trails at Kettle Moraine State Forest Long Lake Campground.
Visit local attractions: Towns surrounding pet friendly campgrounds in the Oostburg area have charming local establishments. "Make sure to venture into Sheybogan and check out the lighthouse," recommends Kathie M. about day trips from Kohler-Andrae. Another camper mentions, "Took a ride over to the town of Dundee and checked out Hamburger Haus for some HUGE ice cream cones."
What campers like
Beach access with specific features: The shoreline areas at Harrington Beach State Park Campground provide distinctive coastal experiences. "The huge sandy beach spans the entire length of the park - which features plenty of trails, a quarry, and a historical element," says Ross K. Campers appreciate the unique combination of beach, forest, and historical sites.
Privacy levels at different campgrounds: Some campsites offer more seclusion than others in the region. "Most of the sites are pretty secluded so if you enjoy your privacy I will love this place," notes J K. about Harrington Beach. At Long Lake Campground, "Sites are decent sized for tenting or small camper. Almost all the sites are surround by trees and small brush so it gives a private feel," reports Brandon L.
Water recreational options: Lakes in the region vary in size and restrictions. "Long Lake is big, so motorcraft are allowed. It's fun to sunbathe and watch waterskiiers and tubers fly by off in the distance," explains Denise N. For quieter water experiences, "No motor boats so nice and quiet. Also great trail running opportunities on the Ice Age," shares Sarah L. about Mauthe Lake.
What you should know
Site selection considerations: Not all sites offer the same level of privacy or orientation. "The sites on the road aren't great, but at least the picnic table and fire pits are secluded with those," advises Justin F. about Kohler-Andrae. Another camper mentions, "Only flaw is the inconsistency with fire pits, some on the opposite side that doesn't give you much privacy for a campfire."
Beach conditions vary by season: Water levels can impact beach accessibility at dog friendly campgrounds near Oostburg. "The area they claim is for people with pets is a long walk and the beach no longer exists as the lake has washed it away. Pet beach is just really slippery rock which is very dangerous for the pet owners and pets alike," cautions Phillip B. about Harrington Beach.
Reservation requirements: Mauthe Lake Campground and other popular spots fill quickly. "If you plan to camp for a weekend, you must make a reservation way in advance. Clean campsite, with shaded areas. We were in the non-electric 200's, not as many RV's in this area," advises Shanon P. Most state parks require reservations at least 2-3 months in advance for summer weekends.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly areas: Many campgrounds feature dedicated spaces for children. "There is a large open area and play area for kids to run around walkable from the camping, lots of little paths to explore," shares Kendra G. about Kohler-Andrae. "Nice beach/swimming area, bike path, and playground for the kids," adds Kaylyn C.
Short-notice options: Sundance Farm Campground can sometimes accommodate last-minute family trips. "The host is so nice, everyone is quiet and kind, the bathrooms are spotlessly clean, reliable Wi-Fi, great water/power hookups, the works. Minutes from downtown Plymouth," reports Sarah N. The campground often has midweek availability even during peak summer months.
Bathroom proximity: Choose sites strategically based on facilities. "Our site was a bit less secluded than I'd prefer but still very nice. The loop we were on the lower 900 loop, had quite a few sites that could be combined to be group sites," explains Darren L. Another camper mentions, "We've stayed at 209 and 227 here... Both are nice and close to pit toilets and a short walk to modern bathroom facilities."
Tips from RVers
Site access challenges: Some pet-friendly campgrounds near Oostburg have complicated entry roads. At one location, "The park is mostly seasonal and the short term sites are literally over a mile of tight, windy road to get to them. Once there the sites are ok," warns angie G. Consider rig size when selecting campgrounds.
Hookup configurations: RVers should note variations in electrical service. Most campgrounds offer 30-amp service with water, while fewer provide full hookups. "The campsites in the 900s didn't have a lot privacy. Walking from the 900s to the beach was a bit of a trek," notes Renee R. about certain sites at Long Lake.
Dump station availability: Not all dog friendly campgrounds near Oostburg provide dump stations. When available, they're often located near the main entrance. "We truly enjoy camping at Kohler Andrae State Park. The facilities are well kept and there is a good variety of things to do at the park from the beach to the boardwalk," shares Sara S. about the overall facility quality.
