What to do
Water activities on Mirror Lake: The still waters of Mirror Lake at Bluewater Bay Campground — Mirror Lake State Park provide perfect conditions for paddling and swimming. "There is a beach and a trail to get there but no bikes are allowed on the trail so we took the road. Beach is average size for a lake and seemed pretty clean but there was a lot of algae," notes a visitor about the swimming area.
Hike woodland trails: Mirror Lake State Park offers hiking paths through wooded areas with wildlife viewing opportunities. "The trails are well maintained and a nice woodland area. We came across lots of fun nature (toads, snakes, bunnies!)," shares one camper who explored the trail system.
Visit Ishnala Supper Club: Located within walking distance of Cliffwood Campground — Mirror Lake State Park, this historic restaurant offers dining with lake views. "Ishnala supper club is very pricy yet excellent food. The building is cool with some original parts from the old log cabin it once was. The service is great beautiful view of the lake from a window seat," reports a camper.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many cabins at Mirror Lake offer wooded settings with natural barriers. "Private sites with lots of woods. Shower and toilets are clean… staff is great. Firewood is also high quality.. $7/bundle or 3 for $20," mentions a camper who appreciated the secluded setting.
Clean facilities: Wisconsin Dells KOA maintains well-kept washrooms and common areas according to guest reports. "The facilities were very clean, and we appreciated that the showers (3 or 4, including a handicap one and a family one) each had separate entrance doors - you don't see that often," one reviewer notes about the KOA bathhouse.
Family-friendly atmosphere: Fox Hill RV Park & Campground receives praise for its kid-focused amenities. "The kids loved the blow ops in the pond. The pool was nice, but a bit colder than the pond. It's heated with a solar cover. There are well kept large outdoor games like chess, connect 4, and checkers," says a family who enjoyed the recreational options.
What you should know
Highway noise affects some sites: Several Mirror Lake campgrounds report traffic sound from nearby roads. "Beautiful facility but the traffic noise was atrocious," explains one camper who stayed at the state park. Another notes, "You are so so close to the freeway. I wasn't aware of the freeway noise during the day, but once I went to bed it was all I could hear."
Wildlife encounters: Raccoons can be problematic at some campgrounds. "The raccoons were brutal. They broke into our crates twice. Smart enough to figure out the clip mechanism," warns one camper about their Mirror Lake experience.
Seasonal pricing fluctuations: During peak summer months, cabin rates increase significantly at Holiday Shores Campground. Campers should expect to pay more between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, with some noting "The campground fills up fast due to how close it is to the Dells so plan ahead. Also, the spots seem to be mostly seasonal spots so that makes it harder to get in as well."
Tips for camping with families
Water play options: Resorts with multiple swimming areas offer variety for different ages. "Wonderful customer service. We stayed in a waterfront lot and had Beautiful views. Clean facilities. There is a lot to explore and have fun in the campground," notes a Holiday Shores guest about their riverfront experience.
Character-themed activities: At Yogi Bear TM Camp-Resort & Waterplayground, children can participate in organized events with costumed characters. "It was a Halloween theme weekend so there was trick or treating, a haunted house, dance party… lots of stuff. My fav thing as an adult is the 'Hey ride!' They pile people onto a trailer turned wagon and drive around the park and yell 'HEEEEEYYYYYYYYY' to every person they see!!!"
Multiple bathroom options: Larger resorts often provide both standard facilities and family bathrooms. "Bathrooms are open during the pandemic, they look on the older side. Firewood was $6 a bundle at the time of our stay," notes one Mirror Lake visitor about available restroom facilities.
Tips from RVers
Extension cord needs: At Arrowhead RV Campground, electrical hookups may require additional equipment. "Make sure you bring 50 ft of electrical cord and water hose. They do offer to barrow their extension cords," advises an RVer about site utilities.
Site levelness varies: Terrain differences affect parking ease at many area campgrounds. "Sites are situated with the terrain which can make them interesting to get into. They're gravel and mostly level. Good wifi which is purchased separately. Full hook ups and friendly staff," reports an Arrowhead camper.
Utility placement considerations: Some campgrounds have unusual hookup configurations. "The site was wide (which is nice) but when backing in you are in a 3 way intersection. One road is supposed to be one way but NO ONE follows this rule and there's not proper signage," warns a Holiday Shores visitor about navigating to their cabin site.
