    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

    It’s pretty nice

A lot of their sites have full hook up but not all of them. Read the details of the sites when booking. Some of the sites have really steep grades and aren’t big rig friendly.

Check in was a breeze had out car tags on our post.

They do have a full-time camp host on site.

I didn’t use the shower 🚿 house but they do have a couple on the grounds.

They have a putt putt course but bring your own putter and ball.

There is Verizon service but it’s spotty.

They do have WiFi but it’s very slow and not secure.

Place is very pet friendly. The people we have met here are great.

Sites are wide but really close together.

    Paintsville Lake State Park Campground

Nice lake, rec area and campground all nestled together

Spent the night here passing through. I did make a reservation just in case but there were a couple sites open. Nice, small campground, most sites are back in but there are a few pull through sites. The staff were friendly and the campground seems maintained fairly well. No wifi and Verizon is touchy. Out in the recreation area I had one bar and LTE though the data seemed pretty good. My site was right at the beginning of the campground. Inside my camper I could only get a signal if I put my phone in the window. The signal was good enough to stream and FaceTime but if I took it out of the window I’d lose signal.

The sites are nice and not on top of each other. They are a nice finer type gravel and mostly level. Big patio area with a picnic table and fire pit. Some of the sites at the front will give you a decent view of the lake, site 18 being the best I believe, I was in site 20.

It’s open year round according to the website. Not sure how big rig friendly it is and I couldn’t find any information on the website, I’d call first. I don’t recall seeing any 5th wheel or motor homes back there.

Overall, very nice campground and I would visit again. There is an 1850’s mountain house in the park just prior to the entrance to the campground/recreation area. There is a fee and you’ll have to check the hours. I forgot to take a picture but the song on the gift shop door said certain days by appointment only and I think Friday thru Sunday they were open for a period of time.

    Wildcat Camping and Fishing

    Very Nice Place

We have been here for a little over a month now. Nice level gravel sites with grass around them. Full hookups 30/50A at each site. Wifi. Could accommodate at least 40+ foot 5th wheels. There is a paylake with small shelter areas, playground, horseshoe pit, game room, community gathering area, store with snacks, drinks, tackle and other items. There are restrooms, but no showers or laundry. Beautiful area. About 11 miles to Paintsville, which has all the stores you'd need. Some closer convenience stores. Johnny and Regina, the owners, couldn't be any nicer. Very good monthly rates. Can receive mail and packages.

One-Night Adventure: Our Shakedown Trip in the New Travel Trailer

Campsite Review for Site 6 – Gateway to Wayne National Forest

Our recent camping trip at this campground was an excellent way to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Wayne National Forest. The serene forest setting provided a perfect backdrop for a relaxing outdoor adventure, with the campground offering all the basics needed for a comfortable stay.

We stayed at Site 6 in our travel trailer, enjoying the ease of a pull-through site. Although the water and electric hookups are on the opposite side unless you drive through the loop the wrong way, this setup has an unexpected benefit—it faces directly toward the woods. This orientation allowed us to savor the tranquility of the forest, adding a layer of privacy and a more intimate connection with nature.

While the sites are decently sized, they are closely positioned with minimal separation, which might limit privacy in other areas. However, the majestic surroundings of Wayne National Forest more than make up for this. The proximity to hiking trails, wildlife sightings, and the peaceful ambiance of the trees create an immersive experience that’s hard to beat.

All in all, this campground is a fantastic base for exploring Wayne National Forest. The combination of basic amenities, convenient access, and the enchanting forest environment makes it a great spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Lake View Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Beautiful and secluded

We visited in the end of October 2021. The colors and the views were spectacular. The drive into the park was very curvy mountain back roads. The site included a fire pit with grill and a picnic table. There was a fair amount of space between sites. Approximately 50-75 feet apart. The bath house was nice but could use a little refreshening. There are many activities including a shooting range, frisbee golf course, swimming pool, playground just to name a few. With Verizon as our service provider no cell signal was available at the park. Overall, we give 3 stars. Minus one star for no cell service and minus another star due to maintenance. Overall, very nice park.

    Sandy Springs Campground

Ohio River Campground - Hidden Gem

This is a peaceful and quiet campground located along the Ohio River. All sites have 50 amp and water hook ups. Most have fire rings and picnic tables. It is amazing to watch the river barges go by and they also have fishing available. Shower house is clean and warm!!

    Sandy Springs Campground

Amazing experience at Sandy Springs Campground

Sandy Springs Campground is this awesome little gem on the Ohio River. It is a small family owned and family oriented Campground with some amazing views of the foothills of Ohio and Kentucky. The Campground is super clean and well maintained. They have full hookups and 30/50 Amp service. There are pull through sites and river front sites. They have several rental options and the coolest house boat over looking the river with a wrap around porch. They have really nice shower and laundry facilities. There is a pretty cool camp store there too. The best part is the friendly people and atmosphere. The owners work very hard here. They take very good care of the guests and there are always plenty of activities on the weekends and holidays. The prices are definitely affordable and can't be beat anywhere I have stayed before. Couldn't recommend a better place to stay on your next camping adventure.

    Huntington / Fox Fire KOA

    Party Central

We enjoyed our stay at Huntington/Fox Fire KOA! This is a holiday KOA that offers more amenities for vacationers. It has very close proximity to I-64 in West Virginia, and you can hear the traffic pretty clearly.

The staff is wonderful, they obviously care very much about their jobs and we enjoyed talking to them. They keep the property very clean which is saying a lot because it’s a very busy park. Each day we watched the park nearly empty and by sundown it was mostly full again. On the weekends it was full to capacity, and it’s occupants were out enjoying their time!

There is: great cellular for TMobile and AT&T, laundry, dog walk area, storage, cabins, a store, a swimming pond, small beach area, and some sites have fire pits. The picnic tables were pretty dated.

The hookups are a little strange. You share pedestals in many of the sites. And the arrangement is a little strange but it works.

    Grayson Lake State Park Campground

    Below average

This is a small campground situated next to a golf course. There are several nice sites but others are not ideal. Our site (13) was ok, other than the scattered broken glass and trash. The main issue was lack of oversight from staff. The site next to us was completely packed with their fifth wheel, a large tent, pop up canopy, four vehicles, a kayak trailer, and a boat that was in the corner of our site. They did not leash their dogs and did not pick up after them. We didn’t complain about them encroaching on our site but felt that the campground should enforce their own rules. Another site nearby setup a construction light at night that lit up the entire campground like a stadium and stayed on late into the night. Basically, campers are left to do as they please regardless of whether it is inconsiderate of other campers. The positive is the location is only a few minutes from the boat ramp for the most popular kayaking spot.

Guide to Huntington

RV parks near Huntington, West Virginia sit along the Ohio River at approximately 564 feet elevation, where the climate features hot summers and moderately cold winters. Many campgrounds in this area offer river views or access to waterways for fishing and boating activities. Train tracks run adjacent to several camping areas, creating occasional noise concerns for light sleepers.

What to do

Skydiving experiences: Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park offers unique recreation with its location on an active airstrip. "The campground is small. Has a nice dog park. Pickle ball courts. Cafe. Sky diving right here. The Ohio river is visible," reports Cheryl T.

Water activities: Four Coves Campground at Beech Fork State Park provides multiple water recreation options. "Great for bike riding and lake activities. The land is flat and there are plenty of low traffic areas to ride. Boat rental fees are reasonable, you can travel to the marina for some boats but paddle boats and canoe rentals are within walking distance of your site," explains Kayla H.

Fishing opportunities: Oasis Point RV Resort features a large pond for catch-and-release fishing. "We have been here for a month. It's very quite, they have a beautiful lake for fishing only. Highly recommend if you need a quite spot to just relax," notes Angelia C.

Playground access: Saint Albans Roadside Park includes family-friendly features. "There is a fenced in playground that is very nice. If you're a boater there is a boat slip a hundred yards away to get onto the kanawha river," writes Andrew S.

What campers like

Level camping pads: Virginia Point Campground receives positive feedback for its concrete sites. "Every RV site has a level concrete pad, making setup easy. Otherwise the rest of the RV area is gravel, without any trees or obstructions," notes Jon C.

Private camping experience: Farver Acres offers a secluded atmosphere with limited sites. "With three spacious gravel sites nestled in a quiet, serene setting, it truly felt like our own private escape from the world. We didn't see another person for four full days," shares Hannah.

Convenient shopping access: Several rv parks near Huntington provide easy access to supplies. "Directly across from a grocery store, pet store, and auto supply store so great resupply stop! And free electric! Clean playground also," mentions Mike about Saint Albans Roadside Park.

Well-maintained facilities: Campgrounds in the Huntington area typically maintain clean sites and amenities. "The folks that run this RV park are very nice and obviously have a lot of pride in their place. Valley Breezy is very well kept and clean," observes Tahnee M. about Valley Breeze RV Campground.

What you should know

Train noise concerns: Some Huntington area campgrounds experience disruption from nearby rail lines. "The only real problem comes with the train tracks right here. The trains are close and do blow their whistle for crossing by the office," warns Cheryl T. about Robert Newlon Airpark.

Seasonal limitations: While several campgrounds operate year-round, check availability during winter months. Creekside Cabins & RV Park operates "All year" according to their season information.

Road noise considerations: Saint Albans Roadside Park sits adjacent to busy roads. "You are literally about 20 yards from the main road, which is the only negative thing with road noise," explains Andrew S.

Water management issues: Some sites experience drainage problems during heavy rain. "The sites did hold a bit of water after a strong rain, be prepared if bad weather is expected," cautions a camper about Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park.

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Oasis Point RV Resort features water attractions for children. "This is definitely a great place to come if you have young ones. Super nice, especially if you have kids...There is a good size lake for swimming, they have stand up paddle boards and kayaks. On the other side of the lake there is a large water slide and a zip line that both end in the water," explains Dustin M.

Security considerations: Many campgrounds in the Huntington region maintain regular security patrols. "The park ranger makes his rounds quite frequently," notes Stephanie B. about Beech Fork State Park.

Swimming options: Not all parks permit swimming in adjacent lakes. "There is no swimming in the lake. There is a pool very close but you still have to pay if you are camping there," cautions Stephanie B. about Four Coves Campground.

Weekend planning: Weekdays offer more privacy at popular campgrounds. "Monday - Wednesday we had our loop all to ourselves. We were visited by geese, ducks and deer. Once the weekend rolled around it got pretty packed," advises Whistle P. about Four Coves Campground.

Tips from RVers

Overnight considerations: Some RV accommodations near Huntington limit stay duration. "I went to the office, asked for 4 nights, I have a 2021 travel trailer. He said 'overnight only'," reports Jerry S. about Valley Breeze RV Campground.

Internet availability: Connectivity varies between campgrounds in the Huntington area. "We were pleasantly surprised by the fast campsite internet," notes Hannah about Farver Acres.

Shade availability: Several campgrounds lack mature trees. "There are no mature trees on that site but site 184 does have," advises Billy B. about Four Coves Campground.

Water pressure management: Bring appropriate equipment for variable water systems. "The water pressure at the site was excellent — just be sure to bring a water pressure regulator to ensure a comfortable experience," recommends Hannah about camping at Farver Acres.
