    Huntington / Fox Fire KOA

    Party Central

We enjoyed our stay at Huntington/Fox Fire KOA! This is a holiday KOA that offers more amenities for vacationers. It has very close proximity to I-64 in West Virginia, and you can hear the traffic pretty clearly.

The staff is wonderful, they obviously care very much about their jobs and we enjoyed talking to them. They keep the property very clean which is saying a lot because it’s a very busy park. Each day we watched the park nearly empty and by sundown it was mostly full again. On the weekends it was full to capacity, and it’s occupants were out enjoying their time!

There is: great cellular for TMobile and AT&T, laundry, dog walk area, storage, cabins, a store, a swimming pond, small beach area, and some sites have fire pits. The picnic tables were pretty dated.

The hookups are a little strange. You share pedestals in many of the sites. And the arrangement is a little strange but it works.

    Huntington / Fox Fire KOA

    Overnight stop

We were stopping here on our way to another KOA. At the check in area I noticed that the park looked nice. When we arrived at our site (we were escorted), the escort left and my wife noticed trash in the fire pit. I called the office, told them there was a lot of garbage at our site including a lot of cigarette butts. A young man came and cleaned up the trash in and around the fire pit and he said he was sorry about it not being clean. There were also piles of wet dog food. There is a terrible sewer smell that continues to float over to our site. There were many complaints of this on the KOA site. The highway is close and very noisy. (See video) Not worth the money to stay here. It might be worth $10 for an overnight stop, we didn’t even hook up electric or water. Ran fans, lights and water pump off of solar. Not at all what I expect from a KOA.

    This KOA is a Keeper

This is a very cozy park tucked in between US60 and I64. We are in site 14 and its not quite level, but they were generous with gravel so the drainage is good! No parking in puddles! The staff is great, friendly, upbeat. The gentleman who led us to the site helped us get positioned, and squared up.The site has a patio, bench, picnic table, fire pit, and a huge gas grill. There is more privacy than usual at KOA, pine trees between sites.Well be back! You do have to watch for the entrance, there is a big KOA sign but its not aligned with the actual turn, so be careful.

    Well Maintained Sites

Paved, well maintained sites but a bit close together. Don’t expect privacy if it’s booked. Reservations close 4 days prior, after that it’s first come, first serve. However, surprisingly very quiet during my visit. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and water & electric hookups. Cannot comment on the showers because no running water at the time of my visit (water line break, scheduled for repairs).

    Pappy's Creekside Camp

    Absolute Terrible Experience

I would give it a zero if possible. The cabin we stayed in was absolutely filthy-dirt and dead bugs on the floor, coffee pot was nasty, extremely small counter was dirty, no access to running water(no even a sink in the bathhouse) and I could go on but I think you get the point. The bathhouse looked like a shed and was also dirty. Were told there were groups going out every weekend, all day long and also night riding. Trails are not marked so you really can't go out on your own. We paid for 3 nights, but only stayed for 2. And of course, we were never offered a refund or partial refund. Like Share

    Ashland Huntington West KOA

    Nice Campground Close to Interstate

    KOA Review

The campground it’s self is very clean and taken care of. We were there in early March with winter temps. The staff was extremely nice and helpful, bath house and laundry was clean. The water at our site was inoperable and they offered to move us without me even having to ask which was nice. The site could be maintained better ours had lots of tire ruts and fire pit could have been better for the price. Overall it’s a good campground with amenities in great shape. A good little dog park that was extremely clean, putt putt, and more. I would come back again in the off season just cause we like camping with less crowds.

    Jenny Wiley State Park Campground

    Clean and Crowded but Quiet

I spent a Friday night there in late June 2020. Most of the campers were in RVs. I found a site at the end of a cul-de-sac away from the other campers. It appeared that the campers observed the quiet hours rules. Sites are close together so there’s not a lot of privacy. Modern amenities, showers, flush toilets. There’s a large lake at the park that accommodates speed boats and jet skis so I didn’t put my kayak in.

5 generations of my family have loved this place

my family have been coming here for 5 generations. it’s definitely a family favorite. Yes it can get crowded, yes there are kids and lots of noise. they’re coming here to have fun too! I grew up in the primitive campground with a huge canvas tent. We’ve graduated to an RV and are on the other side of the campgrounds now but still loving it. I’ve never stayed on the side with the horse camping but we usually run down there for the showers. Canoe the Tygart, take a trail ride, spelunk a Cave, eat a S’more, hike the red trail, see the natural bridge, come for pioneer week, Halloween is a hoot, watch out for skunks, hope you see a wildcat or two, tell a ghost story, play some corn hole, watch out for bears. Anyway go to the caves, you’ll love it.

    Jenny Wiley State Park Campground

    Not what we expected

Our campsite was supposed to be 38’ long but my 28’ camper was all that could fit, barely. Water spigot is far away from the site so I had to go purchase another water hose. Zero cell reception and no wifi. No television reception either. Almost everyone’s site was not flat and took a lot of work to get campers close to level, (watched people pull out after an hour trying to level). No extra parking for vehicles, just drive up into whatever muddy area is around your site. “No outside alcohol” signs everywhere.

Guide to East Lynn Lake

East Lynn Lake rests at approximately 700 feet elevation in Wayne County, West Virginia, surrounded by the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The area experiences distinct seasonal changes with humid summers reaching the mid-80s and winters dropping to the 30s. Several glamping accommodations near East Lynn Lake operate seasonally with some sites requiring advance booking several weeks before peak summer periods.

What to do

Trail riding access: Pappy's Creekside Camp connects directly to the East Lynn outlaw trails system where guests can join organized rides. "We have stayed at Pappys multiple times this year and each time is better than the last. The owner and staff very friendly and even set us up with a local group to show us around," notes one visitor who appreciates the guided trail experiences.

Swimming ponds and water activities: The Oak Hill Campground at Lake Vesuvius provides convenient lake access for water recreation. "The restrooms are clean, the sites are well maintained and the lake is close by for some good kayaking and fishing," shares a regular camper who frequently visits the area.

Special events and celebrations: Seasonal events create unique glamping experiences near East Lynn Lake. At Pappy's Creekside Camp, one guest described: "The Memorial Day celebration pig roast with live music and even a huge fireworks display were amazing. I'm planning on returning for the 4th of July celebration pig roast."

What campers like

Natural surroundings: The Iron Ridge - Lake Vesuvius campground offers wooded sites that immerse glampers in nature. As one camper notes, "I LOVE camping here, unlike a lot of camp grounds they're actually within the woods so you feel like you're actually part of the forest and the nature."

Family-oriented atmosphere: Ole Henry's Camping retreat maintains facilities specifically for families with children. "Ole' Henry's has a very nice setup with a Giovannis pizza restaurant and camp store on site... The playground area has a nice swing set and a couple big wooden play structures. There is drain pipe slides coming off one of the hillsides that is a kid favorite."

Privacy between sites: The Iron Ridge - Lake Vesuvius campground arranges sites to maximize privacy. "Most of the sites shaded and separated by trees. Love the privacy this provides," mentions a regular visitor who considers this their favorite close-to-home destination.

What you should know

Water pressure variations: Sites at some glamping locations near East Lynn Lake have utilities that require attention. At Iron Ridge, one visitor cautions: "Beautiful place to camp. Some sites are more difficult for parking a camper than others. We stayed at site 6 which wasn't too difficult to park but the water pressure was extremely high."

Weather impact on facilities: Heavy rainfall can affect camping conditions in the area. According to one Oak Hill Campground visitor: "Sadly, it was raining the entire time we were at this site. However, the campground was very nice! It was quaint and quiet."

Service inconsistencies: Quality of facilities varies significantly between locations. At Jims Campground, one camper noted: "Is a cheap place, the shower house is very old, $40 per night. The sewer was flooded because of the rain, don't park in the middle line Is bad."

Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated play areas: Campgrounds with structured activities keep children engaged. A visitor at Ashland Huntington West KOA appreciated that "They have a pool and mini golf to entertain the kids who have been driving you crazy on the road. Excellent food trucks which is good since there's not much else in the area."

Consider cabin options for mixed comfort levels: Luxury glamping near East Lynn Lake serves families with varying camping experience. "Great RV/Camper spots for your family! Although I'm more of a tent camper myself, my family members have some medical issues that require them to sleep inside and have access to electricity," notes a visitor at Huntington / Fox Fire KOA.

Check site spacing during holidays: Some campgrounds become crowded during peak periods. A visitor at Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground observed: "We went to the campground during the Halloween festivities in October. It was very crowded the weekend we were there. The campsite beside us had a pull camper, a truck camper, and 2 small tents."

Tips from RVers

Extension cord requirements: Utility placement varies significantly between sites. At Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground, a camper advised: "Also make sure to check in the details, which sites have sewer as they don't label it full hookups up front. The line of sites along the road into the campground all have sewer holes."

Site leveling challenges: Terrain at glamping locations near East Lynn Lake often requires preparation. A KOA visitor noted: "We stayed for an overnight. Site was NOT very level. On gravel. Picnic tables and fire ring."

Road noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some luxury camping experiences. "The highway is close and very noisy. Not worth the money to stay here. It might be worth $10 for an overnight stop, we didn't even hook up electric or water. Ran fans, lights and water pump off of solar."
