Best RV Parks & Resorts near Prestonsburg, KY

Several RV parks near Prestonsburg accommodate various motorhome sizes with full hookup options. Paintsville Lake State Park Campground features gravel sites with water and electric connections, some offering lake views. Sites 18 and 20 provide better views of the water, while most are back-in with a few pull-through options available. One camper noted, "The sites are nice and not on top of each other. They are a nice finer type gravel and mostly level. Big patio area with a picnic table and fire pit." Jenny Wiley State Park Campground offers RV camping with full hookup sites, though some visitors report electrical boxes in rough condition. Yatesville Lake State Park Campground provides spacious full hookup sites on top of the hill with good separation between neighboring RVs.

Many campgrounds in this mountainous region require careful navigation on winding roads. A recent review cautioned about Breaks Interstate Park: "The roads to this amazing State Park are two lane and twisting. We have a 38' 5er and a CrewCab Dually tow vehicle. We didn't have a lot of issues getting here but it is quite mountainous with a lot of climbs." Cell service varies significantly across the region, with Paintsville Lake offering WiFi but limited LTE coverage. Most state parks in the area remain open year-round, though some facilities close seasonally. Dump stations are available at most parks, with Paintsville Lake receiving positive mentions for good water pressure. RV travelers should check site dimensions before booking, as many parks have a mix of level and sloped sites requiring leveling blocks.

    Paintsville Lake State Park Campground

Nice lake, rec area and campground all nestled together

Spent the night here passing through. I did make a reservation just in case but there were a couple sites open. Nice, small campground, most sites are back in but there are a few pull through sites. The staff were friendly and the campground seems maintained fairly well. No wifi and Verizon is touchy. Out in the recreation area I had one bar and LTE though the data seemed pretty good. My site was right at the beginning of the campground. Inside my camper I could only get a signal if I put my phone in the window. The signal was good enough to stream and FaceTime but if I took it out of the window I’d lose signal.

The sites are nice and not on top of each other. They are a nice finer type gravel and mostly level. Big patio area with a picnic table and fire pit. Some of the sites at the front will give you a decent view of the lake, site 18 being the best I believe, I was in site 20.

It’s open year round according to the website. Not sure how big rig friendly it is and I couldn’t find any information on the website, I’d call first. I don’t recall seeing any 5th wheel or motor homes back there.

Overall, very nice campground and I would visit again. There is an 1850’s mountain house in the park just prior to the entrance to the campground/recreation area. There is a fee and you’ll have to check the hours. I forgot to take a picture but the song on the gift shop door said certain days by appointment only and I think Friday thru Sunday they were open for a period of time.

    Wildcat Camping and Fishing

    Very Nice Place

We have been here for a little over a month now. Nice level gravel sites with grass around them. Full hookups 30/50A at each site. Wifi. Could accommodate at least 40+ foot 5th wheels. There is a paylake with small shelter areas, playground, horseshoe pit, game room, community gathering area, store with snacks, drinks, tackle and other items. There are restrooms, but no showers or laundry. Beautiful area. About 11 miles to Paintsville, which has all the stores you'd need. Some closer convenience stores. Johnny and Regina, the owners, couldn't be any nicer. Very good monthly rates. Can receive mail and packages.

Middle Fork Campground — Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Middle Fork - Natural Bridge SP

Just got back from a quick spring break trip to the Red River Gorge. We booked our site in Middle Fork back in January. We had site B024, pull through. Clean campground, nice staff. It is narrow getting down to the site and you can easily miss it as you take the curves of Rt11/Natural Bridge Rd. We have a 37' trailer that took the entire length of the pad. If you pull through with nose facing the river, ALL utilities are on the driver's side/left. 20-30-50 amp plus water hookup. Bring your H20 filter as the 💧 is slightly brown. Pad is asphalt, table and fire ring on small gravel. Bath house has 2 shower stalls, 3 commode, 2 sinks (guys side). There is NO internet/wifi as the the supply line to the campground was cut/damaged 2+ yrs ago. Also, you are in a valley. If wx is clear you might get 2 bars/4G service. My teenagers survived. All the amenities for the park are a short drive or an easy walk. Had a great experience all around. Check out the Gorge Underground and take the SkyLift for an easy climb to Natural Bridge.

    Breaks Interstate Park Campground

    Great Way to Getaway

The Breaks are considered the “Grand Canyon of the south”. Great mountaintop views, hiking, geocaching, kayaking, paddle boats, a zip line, and seasonal white water rafting all available. A few miles from the campground you’ll even find river access with a sandy beach for summer fun. A wonderful getaway when you want to be away from it all. Several campground sections to choose from with primitive sites to full hookup with electric, water, and sewer. Dump stations are available also. There are laundry facilities and bathhouses (didn’t use either so not sure on condition), playgrounds, picnic shelters, cabins, and inns. Each campsite had a fire ring and picnic table. Spots are definitely not level, so bring a variety of blocks—you’ll need them. No outside lights at the sites so when it’s dark it’s d-a-r-k. Beautiful campground.

    Buckhorn Dam Campground

Great Family Camground in the Mountains of E. KY

This has ranked #1 for campgrounds for our family this season.

Nestled in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, this campground has all the things your family could want to do in nature.

Check in was super easy and the staff was great.

The site was very easy to get to.

We were on site 13 and it was nearly perfectly level from left to right. It had both 30 and 50 amp hookups and water (about 35psi on pressure). Each site has a charcoal grill, a fire pit with a grate for cooking and a large picnic table.

Our site backed up to the creek and a nice little levee for fishing. You could also go up back the park and fish right at the spillway from Buckhorn Lake Dam. Really fun experience.

Hands down the best playground for kids we have seen in a campground.

They had a large bathhouse with super clean bathrooms. Unsure about showers as I use the one in my TT.

There were horseshoe pits in two locations in the campsite. Several locations to dispose of trash. They also provided trash bags upon arrival.

Laundry facilities onsite and firewood you could purchase.

The dump station was clean and easily accessible with a hose for flushing.

Erica and her husband are the hosts and were so friendly and helpful. We were there over Mother’s Day weekend and they provided coffee juice and doughnuts for Mother’s Day.

A ton of kiddos for kids to play with and a great area for their bikes, etc.

We 100% will be back to this campground this season.

Lake View Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Beautiful and secluded

We visited in the end of October 2021. The colors and the views were spectacular. The drive into the park was very curvy mountain back roads. The site included a fire pit with grill and a picnic table. There was a fair amount of space between sites. Approximately 50-75 feet apart. The bath house was nice but could use a little refreshening. There are many activities including a shooting range, frisbee golf course, swimming pool, playground just to name a few. With Verizon as our service provider no cell signal was available at the park. Overall, we give 3 stars. Minus one star for no cell service and minus another star due to maintenance. Overall, very nice park.

    Breaks Interstate Park Campground

Nice Campground, Challenging to get to.

Nice Campground, once you get here. The roads to this amazing State Park are two lane and twisting. We have a 38' 5er and a CrewCab Dually tow vehicle. We didn't have a lot of issues getting here but it is quite mountainous with a lot of climbs to get here. The Park is well appointed and the campsites are nice for a state park. Be careful when choosing a site as some are challenging to get into with larger units. We had a pull through which was big enough for our rig. Sites are gravel and spacious. Fire ring/grill combo provided at each site. Bathhouses were clean and well stocked. Be sure to bring all necessary supplies BEFORE you get here, nearest stores are a 20 minute drive away on crooked mountain roads. Will we return? Maybe for a special event but not for a general getaway

    Jenny Wiley State Park Campground

Needs to be updated and repaired

Roads in campground are rough in places. Electrical boxes are in rough shape at some sites. 30 amp kept tripping the breaker. WiFi does not work. Several sites have full hookup but sewer hookups need to be repaired and water hookups are far away.

Guide to Prestonsburg

Prestonsburg, Kentucky sits at 623 feet above sea level in the eastern coal field region of the Appalachian Plateau. This mountainous area receives about 46 inches of rainfall annually, creating lush forest environments around camping areas. Most campgrounds in the region remain open from April through October, with some offering year-round access.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Paintsville Lake State Park Campground, the calm waters provide excellent conditions for catching multiple species. "The water was down so there were a lot of places to paddle onto the shore and wade fishing. Fishing was good with rooster tails and panther martin spinners (silver), 1/8 and 1/16 oz," notes one camper who found success during their stay.

Water recreation: The Oasis Point RV Resort & Adventure Lake offers unique water features not commonly found at other rv sites near Prestonsburg, Kentucky. "They have a large pond that has a nice beach, a huge slide and a zip line. They have kayaks, paddle boards and floats first come first serve," reports Karen P., highlighting the family-friendly water amenities available.

Hiking trails: Several campgrounds provide access to hiking paths with varying difficulty levels. At Twin Knobs Recreation Area, campers can access mountain biking trails directly from the campground and "go on a short hike up one of the knobs," though one visitor notes "there really isn't a good view at the top."

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Yatesville Lake State Park Campground receives praise for its spacious arrangement. "One of my favorite Ky state campgrounds. Plenty of space between campsites," reports Cathi, while another camper notes the campground is "small, quiet, very clean and site are not crammed together."

Water access: Several campgrounds offer direct lake access for swimming and boating. At Twin Knobs Recreation Area, campers appreciate waterfront sites: "We stayed in one of the 'premium' sites, right on the water F19. The view was incredible."

Clean facilities: Visitors consistently mention well-maintained amenities at campgrounds near Prestonsburg. At Paintsville Lake, one camper noted "it's the cleanest I've ever seen!" regarding the bath house, while another appreciated that "the sites are spacious and level."

What you should know

Weather considerations: The mountainous terrain around Prestonsburg can experience sudden weather changes. "We stayed June 5th through June 9th and it rained every day, a lot. Our campsite (A-30) drained the rain off really well," reports a Twin Knobs camper, suggesting campers should prepare for precipitation.

Cell service limitations: Mobile coverage varies significantly by carrier and location. At Zilpo Campground, one visitor noted "Internet service is spotty there– our Verizon hotspot worked ok, but the Sprint was super slow."

Wildlife awareness: Like most wooded camping areas, local wildlife is active. A camper at Backwoods Camping & RV Park mentioned "quiet nights (other than woodland animals)" indicating campers should expect natural sounds after dark and store food securely.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Water features are popular with younger visitors. At Oasis Point, "The kids loved it. We felt like VIP's with the way the owner took care of us. He was great and his staff was awesome," according to one family's experience.

Basketball courts: Some campgrounds offer sports facilities for older children. Twin Knobs Recreation Area provides basketball courts that teens particularly enjoy, with one visitor noting "All of the teens that were with us had a ball (hiking, biking, basketball, and fishing)."

Playground access: Middle Fork Campground at Natural Bridge State Resort Park includes playground equipment. "Great for kids, not super great for secluded camping," mentions one visitor, suggesting it's an excellent choice for families but perhaps not for those seeking isolation.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When booking RV sites near Prestonsburg, Kentucky, consider your precise needs. At Oasis Point, "Our site was very level, maybe 1/2" low on the camp side. There is a good size lake for swimming," reports Dustin M., who specifically recommends site 20 in the 'Backyard' area.

Hookup variations: Different campgrounds offer varying hookup configurations. Valley Breeze RV Campground provides "Good amenities- electric/sewer/water hookup" but some visitors report limited stay durations, with one noting "I went to the office, asked for 4 nights, I have a 2021 travel trailer. He said 'overnight only'."

Navigation challenges: The winding mountain roads require careful driving with larger rigs. At Natural Bridge State Park, a visitor noted the "Small campgrounds with few spots" and mentioned "Not a lot of sites and most were reserved," suggesting advance booking is essential for RV campers.
