Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Onemo, VA

Sun Outdoors Cape Charles accommodates pets at waterfront sites with views of the Chesapeake Bay. Most campgrounds near Onemo welcome dogs with standard leash policies requiring pets to be attended at all times. Cross Rip Camp provides pet-friendly cabin options along with tent and RV sites where dogs can enjoy the shoreline. The adult pool at Sun Outdoors remains clean and well-maintained while pets are restricted to designated areas. Campgrounds typically limit pets to two per site, though specific policies vary by location.

Gwynns Island RV Resort's beachfront sites offer excellent opportunities for dogs to explore the shoreline during April through November season. Many campgrounds in the area feature designated pet waste stations and walking paths suitable for daily exercise. Most properties near the Chesapeake Bay maintain strict leash requirements, especially in common areas and near water access points. Local beaches sometimes restrict dog access during peak summer hours, so early morning or evening walks are recommended. Wildlife considerations include being mindful of shorebirds and local fauna when walking dogs on beaches or trails, particularly during nesting seasons.

    First Landing State Park Campground

A favorite state park in Va!

We live on the other side of Virginia, but have enjoyed returning to First Landing whenever we get the chance. We love the fact that we can visit the beach AND camp.

Campsites are within walking distance to the ocean. VA Beach boardwalk is a short drive away. Beach is dog friendly, obviously pick up after your dogs. Park Rangers patrol and help you feel secure without being overbearing. Visitors Center offers lots of info about things to do. Camp store offers firewood and ice as well as odds and ends you might have forgotten. They also have some really nice bathhouses although not all of them have been renovated.

Bring flip flops for the shower and sandals/walking shoes. Bring bug spray.

    Williamsburg Campground

    Very nice campground

The cabin we stayed in was very nice. It had a very large back deck with a picnic table. We chose one without a bathroom, and the bathhouse was a very short walk. They have plenty of recreational activities for the kids. The staff was friendly and helpful. The playgrounds and pool were very clean, and the store had everything we needed. It is a very short drive off the highway and an easy commute to all of Williamsburg’s attractions. My only complaint is that my dogs typically travel everywhere with me, but I was not allowed to bring them on this trip because pit bulls are the ONLY breed they don’t allow on the campgrounds. However, if you have other breeds there is a very small dog park for them to run around and play. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay at other KOAs when the dogs are not with us.

    Sun Outdoors Cape Charles

    Huge campground!

We stayed here for 12 days during the pandemic. The campground is huge, with lots of amenities. We stayed in the large sites, in the last row beside the field, which was nice, gave extra parking and extra space to play. The spots for smaller campers looked difficult to find/park, but it was very empty so difficult to say. Nice dog park and dog beach.

    Sandy Bottom Nature Park

    Great for outdoor activities

This campsite and park is a ton of fun. We've never camped here but we lived about 5 minutes down the road from the park and absolutely loved it. There are miles of trails around the lake and through the woods you can follow. It is extremely dog friendly with a fenced in dog park as well. There are kayaks and paddle boats you can rent by the hour. This park has plenty of camping spots and also has some yurts that are available to rent out. I would recommend this spot to anyone who wants a convenient family friendly camping/outdoor experience.

What campers like

Waterfront sites: Many campers appreciate direct water access. At Gwynns Island RV Resort, visitors report "was able to get a beach front site and it was an amazing stay." Another reviewer mentioned their "campsite was clean and right on the Chesapeake bay. We had a relaxing quick getaway."

Fishing opportunities: The region offers excellent fishing from both piers and beaches. At Cross Rip Camp, "Motorcycle tent camped. Great owners who made sure we had everything we needed. Beautiful views of sunset and sunrise. Great beach with Adirondack chairs."

Privacy in wooded sites: Campers value secluded spots away from crowds. Newport News Park features "quiet, very spacious, nicely spaced, some surprisingly so" sites that are "heavily wooded" providing a more private camping experience than many coastal campgrounds.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Gwynns Island RV Resort runs from "April 1 to November 9" while Cross Rip Camp operates from "May 1 - Nov 15," making advance planning essential for off-season visits.

Site selection strategies: At Kiptopeke State Park Campground, campers should "try and get C loop spots 15 - 21. They're shaded and at the back of the loop." The park's first two rows of sites have "almost ZERO tree cover" and the "1st row not very level sites."

Water quality variations: Well water is common throughout the region. At Cross Rip Camp, "The bath houses were clean but the whole town uses well water, so that was special."

Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby roads or facilities. Newport News Park has "some road noise from I 64, but not too bad if you stay deeper into the park and away from the lake."

Tips for camping with families

Multiple swimming options: The Chesapeake Bay offers calm swimming waters ideal for children. At Cherrystone Family Camping Resort (now Sun Outdoors Cape Charles), "We have a blast every time we come here. The bathrooms are clean and updated. There is plenty to do. Pool, beach, fishing, boat rentals, golf, paddle boats, bike rentals, and crabbing."

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Water and electric options differ across campgrounds. First Landing State Park Campground has sites that are "easy to get to" with "clean, up-to-date facilities. Large laundry room."

Leveling requirements: Many campsites require equipment for stabilization. At Newport News Park, "many are deceptively unlevel, particularly on the outside of the loops" and you should "make sure you have leveling chalks as some of the sites are too uneven for auto leveling to work."

Connectivity options: Cell coverage varies significantly by campground. At Newport News Park, "AT&T had 2 bars and 6 MB/s w/o a booster, 3 bars and 8 MB/s with it. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy."
