    First Landing State Park Campground

    BACK TO NATURE

I stayed in one of their cottages during October. The cottage is furnished, has a queen size bed and 2 sets of bunk beds; nice living room/dining room combo, full kitchen with dishes, pots, etc.; TV; fireplace; outside deck with grill; and screen porch. There is also a firepit for enjoying the relaxing fire and evening quiet. You have to bring your own firewood. There is a grocery store about 6 minutes away for convenience. Trails, access to the Chesapeake Bay, Spanish moss. manned Visitor Center, privacy and security.

    North Bayshore Campground

Excellent family run campground close to Sandbridge beach

Wonderful spot away from crowds but close to beach. Tent, RV or “ tiny cabin” options. Clean, quiet and pretty. Canal runs around campground that gives you access to Back Bay. Pool and playground. Small store. Super friendly staff. Love it there. 5 minute drive to Sandbridge. 15 to Va Beach strip. Level ground but water collects with heavy rains- to be expected at he beach.

I think pets are OK. Good showers.

    Kiptopeke State Park Campground

    Awesome Yurt Camping

This was our first time staying in a yurt at Kiptopeake State Park. We love staying in the yurts at Virginia State Parks because they are always an affordable, easy way to camping without having to set up a tent or spend the extra money for a cabin. The ones at here are $75/night. This one was awesome! It is hidden down a long walkway from the parking area and is very secluded. The one we stayed in, Yurt 4, only has neighbors on one side. It comes with two picnic tables, a water spigot, fire pit, grill, a big deck around the yurt with rocking chairs, and a refreshing breeze coming off the bay. Unfortunately, the way the yurt is situated, none of that breeze gets inside the yurt and it was very hot inside. Especially if staying here in the summer, I would suggest bringing some fans or a portable a/c for a more comfortable nights sleep. The bathrooms are farther away than I would like with little kids. You have to walk through to the tent campground loop to get to them. Even with a couple negative things about it, I think this is the way to stay here at Kiptopeake and I am already planning our next yurt trip here for next year!

Love this park so much! The beach is amazing. This time we discovered the dog-friendly beach, which was less crowded than the main one. I always like to go out and watch the sunset over the bay, it is magical!

    Chippokes State Park Campground

    Beautiful Plantation

Awesome things to see here! It’s been a working farm since 1619 with beautiful gardens and livestock. The mansion and outbuildings are pretty cool as well.

Restrooms were not very clean. Each time I went to the ladies room, the door was propped wide open, and when I went to brush my teeth in the morning the counters were covered in moths and bugs and gnats. Yuck. The showers were ok.

Ice is $3 and you can grab that from the camp host if it’s after 4pm which is when the store closes. It’s cash only, exactly change. Wood is $6 and there’s a metal box - pay on your honor.

The beaches were very nice. You’re on the Cobham Bay vs. right on the river and in the dead of the summer, the water is sooo unpleasantly warm. You can wade out at the very least 100 yards and still be less than knee-deep, water still hot. The access to the little beaches are short but moderately steep, especially with lots of beach gear or strollers. It also seems to get washed out so watch your steps.

The little visitor center near the water access has cold drinks, souvenirs, ice cream, etc. They obv. accept credit cards. You can bring your dog into this area. There’s also a little wildlife info center and restrooms in the same buildings. There are also areas for day use and a good sized parking lot near the water access.

Straight across the river is Jamestown and Williamsburg, which is cool. I think I was told it’s about four miles across. That being said... those are your closest grocery stores and you have to take the Jamestown Ferry to get there. There is a Dollar General near the park, for odds and ends. Just make sure to stop in advance for what you need because you won’t find much in Surry.

Stopped at the Surry Seafood Co. for lunch and it was ok. Food and service was mediocre, but there was a nice water view from the deck. Was looking forward to stopping for some shrimp to cook that night from Colonial Seafood market but after walking in, I walked right back out. It was so unclean and didn’t smell fresh at all.

We took a beautiful drive around the plantation. The cabins look great and we’ll definitely try those out next time. There were corn fields and soybeans for miles. Such a great park due to its history.

Campsites themselves were pretty nice; not too close together. Our site had the tent pad down away from the picnic table and fire ring which was kind of nice. It was really shady, too. Room for hammocks.

Each site has a picnic table, fire pit, tent pad, lantern pole. Verizon service was great.

Point Lookout State Park - Temporarily Closed

    Great State Park in SoMD

Just got back from a weekend trip there. It was a great State Park with fishing, trails, and boat docks. We stayed in the hoffman loop in our 20 ft TT. That loop was pet friendly, shaded, and right next to the playground.

The most sites were off the road and secluded. Ours was a little over grown and not a straight shot to the landing pad. Fire wood was well seasoned for $6/bx and ice $3/bg at the camp store.

    Isle of Wight Family Campground

    Nice and Very Quiet!

This is a really nice campground. They have on-site bathrooms/showers as well as laundry. It's mostly RV spots but they also allow tent camping and have a couple cabins available for rent. They have a dog park area, playground and pool. The store has items for purchase and a gathering room. They do potlucks and get togethers often for the campers. The staff is very friendly and super helpful. You can purchase firewood and propane on-site. Each spot has a concrete padded area with a picnic table and fire pit. It is a little ways out of town in any direction bit it's very nice and quiet out here as you're surrounded by woods. They also have a fishing pond and trails on-site. This really is one of the best campgrounds I've ever been to! Definitely recommend.

Guide to Onemo

Camping cabins near Onemo, Virginia range from basic to fully-furnished options along the Chesapeake Bay coast. The area sits at sea level with tidal waterways and marshlands dominating the landscape. Most cabin rentals in the region operate from April through November when temperatures average 75-85°F during summer months, dropping to 50-65°F in spring and fall.

What to do

Fishing and crabbing access: Sun Outdoors Cape Charles provides multiple fishing piers and crabbing opportunities. "The restaurant has the best food... everything was wonderful. We will be returning MANY TIMES!!!!" notes Susan P., who also mentions catching crabs from their pier.

Water activities: Several campgrounds offer equipment rentals for paddling. Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay features "boating, hiking, watching wild life and so many pretty birds," according to Mike T., who particularly enjoyed their first crabbing experience on the property's dedicated pier.

Nearby exploration: Visit Cape Charles, approximately 30 minutes from Onemo. "If you venture into Cape Charles, it's a neat town with some good restaurant options," suggests Melissa P., highlighting off-site opportunities when staying at area cabins.

What campers like

Multiple swimming options: Bethpage Camp-Resort stands out for its water amenities. "The lake and pools are fantastic. We love having both options for spending some time in the water," writes Christen C. Most cabins are within walking distance of swimming areas.

Spacious layouts: Many cabin sites offer room to spread out. "Sites are spacious! Golf cart rentals. Pool is incredible for all ages," reports happy_champers about Bethpage Camp-Resort, noting the well-designed spaces with multiple hookup locations.

Wildlife viewing: The shoreline location provides excellent bird and wildlife watching opportunities. At Kiptopeke State Park Campground, Annemarie R. notes, "Wild animals usually pass by often later in the evening, horses, deer, rabbits etc," providing natural entertainment right from cabin porches.

What you should know

Water systems: Well water is common throughout the region. At Cross Rip Camp, Gina G. mentions, "The bath houses were clean but the whole town uses well water, so that was special," indicating visitors should be prepared for mineral-rich water.

Limited services: Most cabin locations are in rural areas with minimal nearby amenities. "Take your groceries bc the grocery stores aren't great," advises Anne F. about staying at Cross Rip Camp. Stock up in larger towns before arriving.

Weather considerations: Eastern shore weather can be unpredictable. "We had 5 days at BethPage and despite the rain, it was a great trip," reports Robert P., suggesting visitors prepare for variable conditions even during high season.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for cabins at resorts with dedicated children's facilities. "Great campground for the family, endless hours spent in the lake. Sites are nice size and well maintained," shares Kathie M. about her stay at Bethpage Camp-Resort.

Cabin accessibility: Some properties offer easier access than others. Grey's Point Camp receives praise from Christopher T.: "Quite a bit to do here. Wish the playgrounds had a bit more for the younger children but it kept them occupied!"

Rental equipment: Many cabin sites provide recreational equipment. Gina G. notes that Cross Rip Camp owners "provided kayaks, canoes, sailboats, beach chairs, bikes and so much more," reducing what families need to bring.

Tips from RVers

Cabin alternative: When RV hookups aren't available, cabins offer a comfortable option. At Kiptopeke State Park, Elizabeth N. found "Nice easy back-in sites, full hookups in good working order, and friendly hosts," noting the cabins and RV sites are often similarly equipped.

Seasonal timing: Most cabin campgrounds near Onemo have different busy periods. "We went the last weekend the pool was open, which wasn't crowded at all," shares Michael B. about Bethpage Camp-Resort, suggesting September for a quieter experience.

Utilities: Check which cabins offer full utilities. "Water, electricity, and the pool do not work consistently," warns Donna G. about inconsistent service at some locations, making it important to confirm amenities before booking.
