Cabin camping near New Point, Virginia places visitors directly on the Chesapeake Bay peninsula where the mainland meets the barrier islands of Virginia's Eastern Shore. The region sits at near sea level with tidal waters influencing the landscape. Summer temperatures typically range from 75-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall provide milder conditions with temperatures between 60-75°F.
What to do
Crabbing from piers: Kings Creek has a fishing pier that extends into the York River where visitors can catch unusual marine species. "I got to catch fish I have never seen before. One being a searobin. By the way, a searobin crocks like a frog when you grab it," notes a camper from Kiptopeke State Park Campground.
Beach collecting: The shoreline areas provide opportunities for shell gathering and beach combing. "There are 2 beautiful beaches, one that allows pets and the other does not. There are wooden boardwalk trails in the park and a few of them leads to different areas on the beach," explains a Kiptopeke visitor.
Paddle sports: Several campgrounds offer equipment rentals for water activities. "Catherine and Rebecca are the best. They were flexible with our dates for tent camping. They provided kayaks, canoes, sailboats, beach chairs, bikes and so much more," says a guest at Cross Rip Camp.
What campers like
Multiple swimming options: Facilities often provide both pool access and beach swimming. "This campground is well run and kept clean. The beaches are beautiful. The pools are fun for all ages and clean," shares a visitor to Sun Outdoors Cape Charles.
Varied cabin locations: Some cabins offer direct water views while others provide more wooded settings. "We stayed at the cabins on the property and it's been well documented that they are haunted. There is a journal/guest log and there are many stories of pennies falling from the ceiling and the rocking chair rocking when no one is sitting in it," reports a camper at Kiptopeke State Park Campground.
On-site food options: Many locations provide dining amenities beyond basic provisions. "They also have a snack shack that steams crabs, and a restaurant on site if you don't feel like cooking. They also offer on site charters and sunset cruises for a cheap price," mentions a Sun Outdoors Cape Charles guest.
What you should know
Railway proximity: Some campgrounds are located extremely close to active rail lines. "The only thing that is negative is that it is on the train tracks. The cabin we stayed in was about 15 feet from the tracks. Not really a complaint from us since the kids thought it was awesome," explains a visitor at Anvil Campground.
Site spacing varies significantly: Some locations pack cabins and sites closely together. "Spacious Sites, Full Hookups. Kids Enjoyed the Playground & Arcade. Safe & Secure Spot. %100 will visit again," reports an Anvil Campground visitor, though another notes: "This is a 4 acre parking lot with a good number and quality of very small amenities with 60 'sites' sandwiched between roads and very active train tracks."
Military base access: Some facilities require proper identification. "It is located on a military base so access is limited to those with base access. The base is more of an industrial area with lots of traffic but some of the cabins sit back on the water so noise is not an issue," explains a visitor to Kings Creek.
