The Virginia Eastern Shore offers a coastal camping experience with direct access to the Chesapeake Bay. Situated near New Point, the terrain features coastal plains with sandy beaches and maritime forests. Summer temperatures typically reach the upper 80s with high humidity, while spring and fall provide more moderate conditions between 60-75°F. Campgrounds in this area often feature waterfront access with opportunities for water recreation without requiring ocean-facing exposure.
What to do
Explore the York River: Kiptopeke State Park offers multiple ways to enjoy the water. "Virginia has some wonderful state parks and this is one of my favorites. It's got a nice beach, boat launch and a couple miles of hiking trails," notes Stuart M. The park serves as an excellent base for kayaking expeditions to nearby barrier islands.
Try crabbing and fishing: Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay features a dedicated crabbing pier. "We had never been crabbing and this beautiful rv park has its own crabbing pier. There is boating, hiking, watching wild life and so many pretty birds," reports Mike T. The campground provides equipment access for guests wanting to try this regional specialty.
Collect seashells: Beaches throughout the region offer excellent shell collecting opportunities. "This park is a nice place to bring your family to camp, fish, crab and relax by the beach and collect seashells. It has 2 beautiful beaches, one that allows pets and the other does not," explains Annemarie R. from Kiptopeke State Park.
Visit historic sites: The region's proximity to colonial landmarks makes it ideal for history buffs. "We stayed here during our historical tour of Jamestown and Yorktown. The location is fantastic and close to all things Williamsburg," reports Bridget H. who stayed at Anvil Campground.
What campers like
Waterfront views: Sun Outdoors Cape Charles (formerly Cherrystone) receives consistent praise for its setting. "Cherrystone is located right on the Chesapeake Bay, and every site has a beautiful view. From camp fires, to crabbing and fishing, or organized games and entertainment," shares Stephanie D.
Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention the quality of bathhouses. "The bathhouses and laundry facility is new, clean, and very nice," reports Erin S. about Kings Creek. Ashley I. notes about Kiptopeke State Park, "Nice park. 1st two rows of sites have almost ZERO tree cover. 1st row not very level sites. Tent sites are wooded, no RVs allowed."
Family-oriented activities: Cape Charles / Chesapeake Bay KOA receives praise for its entertainment options. "Went for a Halloween weekend, big campground, lots of spots, some of which are a little too close together. Zero shade, make sure you have your awning and/or extra tents. Has awesome hammocks that look over the beach, nice place to relax," shares Erin W.
Peaceful environment: Cross Rip Camp offers a tranquil setting with water access. "Motorcycle tent camped. Great owners who made sure we had everything we needed. Beautiful views of sunset and sunrise. Great beach with Adirondack chairs. Bathhouse very clean. Water view from campsite," writes Greg.
What you should know
Site selection matters: At Kiptopeke State Park, "C loop has full hookup where A and B do not. Try and get C loop spots 15-21. They're shaded and at the back of the loop," advises Aaron S. Sites vary significantly in exposure and proximity to amenities across most campgrounds.
Seasonal operations: Many campgrounds in the region operate on limited schedules. Cross Rip Camp operates from May 1 through mid-November, while Sun Outdoors has a longer season but reduces services during winter months.
Wildlife visitors: Evening wildlife sightings are common at many campgrounds. "Wild animals usually pass by often later in the evening, horses, deer, rabbits etc; sites are nice and big. Some sunny some shady," notes Gabby B. about Kiptopeke State Park.
Train noise: Some campgrounds have proximity issues with transportation routes. At Anvil Campground, "The train is so close that it shakes our RV," reports Heather S. Consider noise sensitivity when selecting your glamping location near New Point.
Tips for camping with families
Multiple swimming options: First Landing State Park Campground offers both bay and pool access. "Access to the beach is a plus, the park rangers do their job well, and many great amenities are available," notes Tyler H. The campground provides quieter beach access than commercial areas.
Playground access: For families with young children, check campground playground facilities. "My boys love the jump pads, pools and paddle boats. As a family we enjoy the fishing piers, new beach and cafe," shares Beth F. about Sun Outdoors Cape Charles, highlighting its kid-friendly amenities.
Recreation equipment: Some properties provide complimentary recreation equipment. "Catherine and Rebecca are the best. They were flexible with our dates for tent camping. They provided kayaks, canoes, sailboats, beach chairs, bikes and so much more," notes Gina G. about Cross Rip Camp.
Budget-friendly options: Military families can access Bethel Park at significant savings. "For $10/night with full bathrooms, sink to wash dishes in, and laundry? Worth the lights! Will definitely stay here again," reports Kimberly F., who tent camped there with children ages 8, 6, and 4.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing considerations: At Sun Outdoors Cape Charles, "The camper spaces are perfect, not too close to your neighbor," according to Beth F. However, experiences vary by campground, with Anvil Campground receiving comments about tight spacing: "You are packed in here such that you don't put out your awning or any exterior items and weave your way through the next RV's bump out."
Hookup reliability: Full hookups are standard at most campgrounds in the region, but quality varies. "Concrete pads on all of the sites, you weren't camping on top of other campers, hiking trails, and full hookups including cable! You can't beat it for the price," Kevin M. reports about Kings Creek.
Shade availability: Several reviewers note the importance of shade in this region, particularly during summer months. "Large, private sites among really cool, bent trees. Clean, up-to-date facilities. Large laundry room," shares Adam and Suzanne B. about their experience at First Landing State Park.
