Lancaster's waterfront camping options extend beyond the immediate area, with additional RV sites within a 30-50 mile radius along the Chesapeake Bay. The Eastern Shore campgrounds provide different water access points than those directly in Lancaster, with many offering fishing and crabbing opportunities in the tidal marshes. Most campgrounds in this region close for winter between November and March.
What to do
Crabbing from dedicated piers: Thousand Trails Chesapeake Bay offers a crabbing pier for guests seeking a traditional Chesapeake experience. "We had never been crabbing and this beautiful rv park has its own crabbing pier. There is boating, hiking, watching wild life and so many pretty birds," notes camper Mike T.
Fossil hunting: Westmoreland State Park, located near several RV sites, provides unique fossil beach access. When staying at Thousand Trails Harbor View, one camper discovered that "nearby Colonial Beach is a cute area that has nice waterfront access. We also loved going to Westmoreland park which was practically next door to Harbor View. Great trails and fossil beach was fun."
Biking on paved pathways: Several campgrounds feature dedicated biking areas for families. At American Heritage RV Park, "With all paved streets the campground is perfect for bike riding. The sites are all very large and accommodating for groups of multiple campers," according to Christen C.
What campers like
Pool complexes for hot weather: The water amenities vary significantly between properties. "Pool is incredible for all ages. Employees are super friendly. 50amp & 30amp hookup. Sewer is in 2 locations for each site," reports one camper about Bethpage Camp-Resort.
River views: Waterfront campsites offer direct views of regional waterways. At Gwynns Island RV Resort, one camper shared, "Campsite was clean and right on the Chesapeake bay. We had a relaxing quick getaway and will probably visit again."
Golf cart accessibility: Many large campgrounds permit or rent golf carts for navigating between amenities. "We loved having both options for spending some time in the water. The playgrounds are large and fun for the younger kids. With all paved streets the campground is perfect for bike riding," notes a camper about Bethpage Camp-Resort.
What you should know
Cell service and connectivity: Internet access varies dramatically between properties. At Thousand Trails Virginia Landing, "We stayed near the water with full hookups. This place is absolutely beautiful and must have been amazing in its prime. No updates are being made and most everything was shut down." Another camper warned about isolation: "It is very isolated, make sure you have everything you need, it's a 30 minute drive to the Walmart."
Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds close partially or completely during winter months. The exceptions are primarily Thousand Trails properties, though amenities may be limited. American Heritage RV Park stays open year-round with full hookups, providing a winter camping option.
Reservation requirements: During peak summer weekends, most campgrounds fill completely. Many Thousand Trails properties use a first-come-first-served site selection process upon arrival rather than pre-assigning sites, which can create challenges for planning.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Look for campgrounds with multiple play areas for different age groups. "There are so many activities for kids at this campground. There are waters slides, playgrounds, fishing, water rentals, and campground sponsored fun," notes a camper at Grey's Point Camp.
Scheduled activities: Weekend programming varies significantly between campgrounds. "This is one of the best campgrounds we have stayed at. It is very family oriented with lots to do for all ages. The sites are spacious and always clean when we arrive," explains Cathy F. about Grey's Point Camp.
Entertainment options: Many campgrounds offer evening events during peak season. "Sweet Justice played this year on the Saturday we were there....phenomenal band....we had an awesome time. Cant wait to go back!" shares Kathy jo M. about their experience at Bethpage.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategies: Many campgrounds have both shaded and open sites with different advantages. At Military Park Cheatham Annex, "The campground had a spacious layout that allowed for easy RV maneuvering. Whether you're a seasoned RV enthusiast or a camper just starting out, you'll appreciate the space."
Concrete pad availability: For level setups, look for campgrounds with concrete pads. "Sites are concrete, level, and most had trees for shade. New section at rear of park is not well shaded but new construction. Good connections for water cable and sewer," notes John D. about American Heritage RV Park.
Site leveling concerns: Some RV sites near Lancaster require additional equipment for leveling. At Camp Cardinal RV Resort, one camper noted, "Very Large sites for the pull through and the patios were nice." This contrasts with other properties where leveling can be challenging.
