RV camping near Eggnog, Utah provides access to Capitol Reef National Park and surrounding wilderness areas. The region features red rock formations, slot canyons, and high desert terrain at elevations ranging from 4,000 to 8,000 feet. Summer temperatures can exceed 100°F while winter brings freezing conditions, affecting campground availability and camping comfort throughout the seasons.
What to do
Boat-in camping at Lake Powell: From Bullfrog RV & Campground, you can access numerous secluded camping spots. "Just beyond the Bullfrog marina, there are tons of little coves and canyons just waiting to be explored. Camping is allowed in most of these secluded spots off of the main channel of Lake Powell and offer quiet refuges from the main shores that can tend to get quite busy," notes Isabelle K.
Star gazing in dark skies: The minimal light pollution creates exceptional night viewing conditions. "Camping just in sleeping bags and on pads directly on the rocks was a treat under the cloudless starry skies," shares one Bullfrog visitor. At Capitol Reef RV Park and Glamping, campers appreciate that it's "very dark at night so really nice for stargazing."
Hiking the slot canyons: The region offers numerous slot canyon hikes within 30-45 minutes of most campgrounds. "Close drive to the dam, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend," mentions Nicole B. about the surrounding attractions accessible from camping areas.
What campers like
Solitude in off-season: Visiting during spring and fall provides more privacy. "We were here a week before opening season (the first week of March). Some people may not like it during this time because it's a ghost town. For us, it was perfect. No crowds... we had the place to ourselves," reports Nicole B. about Bullfrog Glen Canyon.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain high standards for bathrooms and showers. A guest at Boulder Meadows RV Park appreciated the "shower house, laundry, lounge area in same building," while another camper mentioned "the bathroom/showers were old, but they worked and had hot water" at another facility near Eggnog.
Proximity to multiple attractions: The central location allows visits to several parks. "Great location with easy access to Capitol Reef NP," notes a visitor at one campground, while another adds it's a "great spot if exploring capitol reef national park, also good spot for longer stays."
What you should know
Weather fluctuations: The region experiences extreme conditions. "The weather can change quite rapidly at Powell so proper precautions and gear should be taken in preparation for large storms or cold winds," warns Isabelle K. Summer temperatures often reach 100+ degrees while winters can drop below freezing.
Electrical reliability varies: Some campgrounds experience power issues during peak usage. At Thousand Lakes RV Park, one camper reported, "When all the large RVs returned for the night, our electricity browned out and we couldn't run our AC. Our power also cut out during the night."
Seasonal closures: Most campgrounds near Eggnog operate from March/April through October. A camper at Sand Creek noted, "They're still open in the Winter, but we didn't find out they closed their showers and bathrooms until we were told upon arrival. (They close 10/31)."
Water quality considerations: Water sources vary between campgrounds. At Offroad RV Resort, "The water for the sites are reverse osmosis. I did check it with my meter, and it is very clean," reports Patrick J.
Tips for camping with families
Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer pools for cooling off. At Thousand Lakes RV Park, "The small swimming pool was loved by the kids. The grassy park area was nice," mentions Scott O., providing a welcome respite from the heat.
Campground layouts: Site spacing affects comfort with children. "This RV park is very family-friendly, so keep in mind there are kids EVERYWHERE - kids riding their bikes in the roads, kids crying, kids yelling," notes Angela G. about Wonderland RV Park, which may be positive or negative depending on your preferences.
Amenities for children: Some campgrounds offer recreational facilities. One visitor mentioned, "There is a large park area in the center with a playground and volleyball court. Super kid friendly." Look for campgrounds with common areas where children can play safely.
Tips from RVers
Site dimensions: Check site lengths before booking as some are shorter than advertised. At Dukes Slickrock Campground, "We had to back out of the 'pull through' site because there wasn't clearance to pull forward with our 30ft 5th wheel. The double sites are wide and spacious but all the sites seem to be short," advises Sprite N.
Hookup configurations: Power options vary significantly between parks. "Many of the sites were out of order or had problems with their water/and or electric," reported one RVer about a campground in the area, while others noted reliable 50-amp service at locations like Sand Creek RV.
Spacing between rigs: Site width differs dramatically between locations. At Offroad RV Resort, "The sites are huge!" notes one camper, while another RVer observed, "I have been full-timing in a 42' Class A for about 6 months. This CG has the largest sites I've come across yet. In most, you can barely get your awning out without hitting the neighbors rig. Here, I'm guesstimating 30' to the next rig, on either side."
