Wind defines the camping experience at this dispersed BLM site positioned on a mesa above the main Capitol Reef corridor. Multiple campers report strong evening gusts that can challenge tent setups, with one reviewer finding their tent "half way down a mountain" after returning from a day hike. The elevated location sits approximately a quarter-mile off paved Notom Road via a short dirt access route that accommodates larger RVs, though the rocky surface requires slow navigation.
The mesa provides expansive sightlines toward the Henry Mountains and Capitol Reef's red rock formations. Campers typically spread out across the open terrain with ample space between sites, creating natural privacy even when multiple groups are present. Terry A. notes the "amazing view of Henry mountains and sunrise" from this vantage point. The exposed setting offers no natural windbreaks or shade structures.
Access proves manageable for various vehicle types, with front-wheel drive vans navigating the rocky approach successfully at reduced speeds. Large Class A motorhomes up to 36 feet have reached the camping area without difficulty. Wood fires are prohibited at this location, though the BLM allows campfires at other sites. The area tends to work best for RV camping or car camping rather than traditional tent camping due to wind exposure.
For a more sheltered alternative, Sleepy Hollow Campground provides tree cover and developed amenities several miles east.
