Positioned 6,200 feet above sea level on a mesa overlooking the Colorado River, Wingate Campground sits 22 miles from the main highway via a steady climb through high desert terrain. The 2018-opened facility provides electric hookups at paved sites, each equipped with a two-walled shelter housing picnic tables and fire rings. Water must be trucked in from Moab, so campers arrive with their own supply for the duration of their stay.
Sites spread across the mesa with concrete pads that accommodate both RVs and tents. Walk-in tent sites require carries of roughly 100 feet from parking areas near the restroom facilities. "Bring plenty of water as campground has power only at your site," advises Eric P., noting the limited services. The covered shelters prove valuable during afternoon sun and sudden weather changes that sweep across the exposed terrain.
Flush toilets with automatic features serve the main camping loops, while vault toilets handle overflow near walk-in areas. Reviewers consistently praise the cleanliness of facilities, though some note ventilation issues with certain vault units during peak season. The campground functions as a staging point for Kayenta Campground — Dead Horse Point State Park, Arches National Park 20 minutes away, and Canyonlands' Islands in the Sky district at similar distance.
Rim trails accessible directly from sites lead to overlooks above the Colorado River's horseshoe bend. Cell service remains spotty across the mesa, and the nearest supplies require a 30-minute drive. Summer temperatures climb rapidly after sunrise on the exposed sites, while winter nights can drop into the twenties even with electric heaters running. Reservations help secure preferred sites during busy seasons.
For tree cover and additional privacy between sites, campers might consider places to camp around Dead Horse Point State Park at lower elevations.

A camping unit is one tent, one trailer, or one camper—not a combination or multiples of the above. A camper is defined as an RV, conversion van, vehicle with rooftop tent, or any vehicle that is slept in. Only one vehicle is allowed per campsite. A vehicle and attached tow equipment is considered one vehicle. Some, but not all, campsites may accommodate an extra vehicle. Only one extra vehicle is allowed per site. Additional fees are required for extra vehicles. For questions regarding extra vehicles, please call Dead Horse Point State Park at 435-259-2614. Tent-only sites are walk-in sites and will not accommodate RVs, trailers, campers, camper vans, or vehicles with rooftop tents. Due to limited parking, no extra vehicles are allowed in the tent-only sites.
