CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Mill Creek Ranch RV & Cottage Resort provides full pet accommodations across tent sites, RV spaces, cabins, and yurts. Dogs are welcome throughout the property with standard leash requirements, and the spacious sites offer ample room for pets to relax with their owners. The park maintains clean grounds with concrete pads that are level and well-maintained, making it comfortable for both pets and their owners. Each site includes a picnic table where campers and their dogs can enjoy meals together. Canton I-20 RV Park also welcomes pets with 45 large, spacious sites that provide plenty of room for dogs to stretch out while remaining on leash.

Texas Log Cabin RV Park offers a more rustic pet-friendly camping experience with natural surroundings rather than concrete pads. The park features common fire pit areas where pets on leash can join their owners during evening gatherings. Park hosts are known for being particularly accommodating to pet owners, maintaining clean facilities and trails suitable for dog walking. Big Tex Campgrounds provides shaded pet-friendly sites with picnic tables and fire pits, giving dogs and owners comfortable outdoor spaces to enjoy together. The campground's hiking trails offer excellent opportunities for exercising dogs, though pets must remain leashed at all times. Purtis Creek State Park and Tyler State Park both permit pets in camping areas but require them to be restrained at all times, with access to shoreline areas where dogs can cool off under supervision.

    Shady Lake RV Park

    Overnight Stop

This park is close to highway and great for overnight stay. The park has pull through full site hookups. The park has a pond that is the center of the entire campground. The park has two dog parks available as well for those traveling with pets.

    Two things I loved:

    1. Close to highway quick stay
    2. The pond nice view with ducklings

One thing I didn’t love: Really close to others for extended stays.

    Patriot RV Park

    Comfortable stay

Stayed for two months for my husband's work. Park manager, Becky, was helpful and nice. They have a saltwater pool, dog park, laundry room, shower/bathrooms, trees/landscaping and access to a boat ramp. Some sites are a bit tight. We were in the top part of the campground and had no issues with it being real wet. Have heard that the lower area does have pooling of water with heavy rain. It does go away quickly, but should be aware of this if you have lots of outside things or a pet. Would stay here again.

    Tyler RV Park

    Great location, clean and safe

This park is in a perfect spot on the outskirts of town. It’s really quiet, has a pond, dog park, walking trail and the road to town is beautiful. It’s only about 5 to 10 minutes from a fairly new shopping center and restaurants. Has a laundry facility on site. Everything is super clean. Anthony is great to work with and is very helpful. Neighbors are friendly and courteous. Wish we could stay longer.

    Tyler State Park Campground

    One of our favorite parks

I should mention that my husband is from Canada. He was very unenthusiastic about camping in Texas. Well Tyler State Park made him change his mind! He LOVED the large trees, said it was the closest he'd felt to home in quite some time. We love the variety of types of sites they offer. Lake front, group, hike in, cabin, they have something for everyone! Only downfall is they book so quickly.

    New Park

Came here because I am going to the Tech Acabemy down the road in Athens. I love the amenities here (pool, Pavillion, gas grilles, dog park and wash, pond, pickleball, other games walking trail, etc.). There are some really friendly people here. You should check it out.

    Plantation Place

WARNING : NO BATHROOMS NO SHOWERS

WARNING: NO BATHROOMS, NO SHOWERS. Quiet park with easy access to Dallas. Nice dog walking area and dog park. Full hookups. I get that RVs have bathrooms and most have showers, but never in all my years have I been to a park with no bathrooms or showers. Based on the reviews of others a year or more ago I would have to assume there are no plans for any in the future. As long as you know this in advance and are OK with it, you'll be satisfied here. For me,$36, 2 1/2 hours of an afternoon and a trip to Loves for a 2 showers and all was good but I'd have planned differently had I known.

    Bluebonnet Ridge RV Park

    AWFUL

Stayed here 5 nights waiting for our property to be ready. Called into the office like we have every morning and was told"sorry you have to leave we reserved your spot." ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!!!! Who does this??? No notice, didn't say anything all week. But sure took our money! Poop all over the grass. The dog park is nasty! They give you all the rules, very strick. LOUD, the highway is right here. Unprofessional!!!!! Never again!!!!!

    Tyler State Park Campground

    Options Galore!

This is my favorite state park in Texas! Lots of options for all kinds of campers. For camping, lots of different sites available for RVs/Campers, Tents, etc. some along the lake, some in the woods, and also cabins and shelters available! Hiking options vary from a nature stroll, to some more serious up-downs through the hills on the outskirts of the campground. Bring your friends, family, and pets, there is truly something for everyone here, even kayak and canoe rentals at the lake!

    Bluebonnet Ridge RV Park

Would stay again, pretty good park

We spent an entire month, as we typically do, in Bluebonnet Ridge RV Park in Terrell, Texas. There is a lot to really like about this campground. We would definitely stay here again.

    Pros:

    • The park was clearly being maintained

    • The basketball /tennis courts had just been resurfaced

    • Anytime someone left, or a spot was empty, new gravel was being dumped and leveled

    • Even though closed for Covid, the pool was cleaned daily.

    • There's a small dog park area.

    • Doggie bags were provided in multiple places, and ample trash cans in which to drop them.

    • Sufficient WiFi repeaters throughout the CG

    • The grass is kept mowed down, good to avoid those Texas stickers getting in your shoelaces.

    • All but one staff member was really friendly.

    • Package receiving was well handled and painless.

    • Each visitor, even short term like us, gets a mailbox. You can go in 24/7 and check it.

    • There's a "swap area" where people leave magazines, etc. (Near the mailboxes.)

    • There's a nice little pond you can fish in, catch-and-release only, no license required.

    • LOTS of room to walk the dog!

    • There's ample overflow parking and trailer storage space so you don't have to crowd your campsite.

    • Laundry facility on site, we didn't utilize it since we have a W/D in the rig.

    • Bulletin board for posting things, we bought our W/D from another person at the campsite!

    • Park was pretty quiet while we were there. No ruckus or loud people. Folks walked around, talked a bit.

    • They have Good Sam and Passport American discounts available.

    Cons:

    • You're really close to I-20, you will hear the road noise. Only trucks are loud. (We did hear a blowout, scared me to death!)
    • The WiFi, while available, is really slow. When you connect, they track usage by hardware MAC address. Use too much, you get blocked and have to ask to be allowed back on.* There are some boggy areas you have to watch for near the pond. (Don't step on the thousands of crawfish towers!)
    • The road is in fairly bad shape, leading into the park. They could really use a road company out there to fix it.
    • There are some rigs that appear more"permanent" with stairs, patio furniture, that sort of thing. But none were run-down looking.
    • When it rains, some of the driveways do get muddy.  The gravel replacement helps.

    Other:

    • There are a LOT of Tiny Houses that have been put on the property. They all looks really new, well maintained.
    • The staff appears to reserve some spots near the front for folks coming in for a day or two to a week.  It was NOT all permanents by any means.

Guide to Canton

Purtis Creek State Park Campground offers camping experiences set among the East Texas Piney Woods, just an hour and a half drive from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The region features rolling hills with elevation changes between 350-500 feet, creating distinct camping terrains across the Canton area. Summer temperatures typically reach 90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall provide milder conditions with nighttime temperatures dropping to 50-60°F.

What to do

Kayaking and paddling: Lake access at Purtis Creek State Park Campground allows water recreation with boat rentals available. The park features a lake where campers can rent kayaks and paddleboards. One camper noted, "A popular fishing hole. Most sites are electric and water at $20, water only at $14 and primitive at $10."

Night sky viewing: Clear skies offer stargazing opportunities with minimal light pollution. Sites at Purtis Creek provide excellent stargazing conditions. A reviewer mentioned, "Once the sun set, the sky lights up with stars where you're just able to see the haze of the Milky Way."

Fishing: Multiple piers and shoreline access for anglers at Tyler State Park Campground. The park is known for good fishing opportunities. A camper shared, "Great lake, MTB, hiking and good facilities. Nestled in the piney woods," while another mentioned the "Great little lake to fish, kayak, swim and hike!"

Hiking: Trail systems ranging from 1-6 miles with varying difficulty levels. Purtis Creek offers multiple loop trails. A visitor explained, "There are a couple of loops at one and two miles. I walked the entire stretch of around 6 miles." While at Big Tex Campgrounds, a camper noted they have "a couple of small hiking trails" with "several other amenities coming."

What campers like

Spacious sites: Big Tex Campgrounds offers large, shaded areas with personal fire pits. A recent reviewer shared, "The sites are all large and shaded with a picnic table and a fire pit. Our site was also a full hookup site."

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and showers throughout dog friendly campgrounds near Canton. At Mill Creek Ranch, a camper emphasized, "Very clear grounds and bathrooms. All concrete pads and level. This is a large park and staffed well."

Wildlife viewing: Opportunities to observe local fauna in natural settings. At Purtis Creek, one camper recounted, "I switched to the red lense to read and spotted a possum as it wandered into my camp site. If I hadn't made some noise, I don't think she would have noticed me." Lake Tawakoni visitors mentioned seeing "squirrels get into our tent" and noted "lots of birds on the beach and near the water shore."

Privacy between sites: Texas Log Cabin RV Park provides a more secluded camping experience. A camper described it as "like ol school camping" and noted it's "simple no concrete, have common fire pit areas and they even give you the word to burn at the common area."

What you should know

Weather considerations: Summer heat requires preparation with temperatures consistently above 90°F. The region experiences high humidity during summer months, making spring and fall preferable for many campers. At Lake Tawakoni, a visitor advised, "Fall has its advantages. The park was nearly vacant and it was easy to pay at the box since I had arrived late in the day."

Insect management: Ant prevention measures recommended at some locations. A camper at Lake Tawakoni State Park Campground warned, "Come prepared to battle the ants. We were overcome in our trailer with thousands of ants the first night, which has never happened before. We got them under control with spray after two days."

Reservation planning: Popular parks fill quickly, especially on weekends. Tyler State Park is particularly in demand. A camper stated, "Hard to get reservations because it is so popular! If you get reservations it's kinda like winning the lottery."

Noise levels: Some parks experience road noise due to proximity to highways. At Purtis Creek, a visitor pointed out, "The only real drawback is how close it is to the main roads. Car noise can be heard at almost all hours."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Canton I-20 RV Park maintains clean play areas for children. The park features "a pool, showers, and restrooms that are clean and maintained." A visitor noted the facilities are "beautiful, great spaces, picnic tables, nice clean pool."

Swimming areas: Designated beach and water access points for supervised water play. Tyler State Park offers a swimming area that "can get crowded on the weekends but there's plenty of quieter access points." A visitor mentioned, "The playground is one of the best I've seen at the state parks we've been to!"

Family-friendly activities: Scheduled events for children at some Canton-area pet-friendly campgrounds. At Purtis Creek, a camper mentioned, "The park staff had activities for the kids. Very big camping spots."

Bathroom convenience: Individual shower/restroom combinations available. Lake Tawakoni offers unique bathroom facilities. A camper highlighted, "In the loop bathroom they have individual rooms that have toilet and shower with a high lock. Really awesome if you are using shower with toddlers."

Tips from RVers

Level sites: Mill Creek Ranch offers concrete pads suitable for all RV sizes. A visitor shared, "We stayed one night in our RV in this spacious RV resort. The pad for the RV was level, with a nice amount of space between sites."

Layout advantages: Pull-through options at Texan RV Park & Campus provide extra room for larger rigs. A camper mentioned, "The pull thru spot we had was very spacious so the kids had room to play by our camper."

Full hookups: Many Canton area campgrounds offer complete utility connections. At Texas Log Cabin RV Park, a visitor explained, "This was our first stop with our new travel trailer. We arrived after dark and the owner Barb waited for us and showed us to our camp site. She even helped us back in and made sure we were good for the night."

Accessibility: Easy interstate access for larger vehicles. Canton I-20 RV Park provides "sites that are large, easy to pull into." A visitor noted the park is "super easy access - very affordable" and "quiet for being so close to I-20."
