Wilson H Fox campground sits on the shores of Granger Lake about 30 minutes from Cameron, Texas. The area features moderately hilly terrain with elevations ranging between 400-600 feet. Most campsites offer partial shade from native oak trees, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 95°F between June and September.
What to do
Fishing for crappie: At Wilson H Fox, fishing opportunities abound, especially for specific species. "You you wonder what this lake is best for fishing it's crappie," notes Douglas D. The lake maintains stable water levels most of the year except during drought conditions.
Swimming in designated areas: Cooling off is essential during hot Texas months. Taylor offers "a nice little beach area. You can paddle the lake to the river and paddle up it to the highway. Watch out for wallowing feral hogs," advises Emily M. Swimming beaches typically have no lifeguards on duty.
Wildlife observation: Many campgrounds in the area support diverse wildlife viewing opportunities. "We come here every year. Quite, calm. Fishing, swimming, animal watching it has it all," reports Elizabeth M. about Wilson H Fox. Early morning and evening hours provide best wildlife viewing conditions.
What campers like
Shaded camping areas: Finding relief from the Texas sun ranks high on campers' priority lists. At Cedar Ridge, "Very family friendly park. We road bicycles, played on the playground. Hiked around and fished," says Cathy C. Most tree-covered sites fill quickly during summer months.
Spacious site layouts: Campers appreciate the ample room between sites. "Spots are spacious, some large. We stayed in site 24. Next closest neighbor was 75 feet or better away," notes Roscoe's R. at Wilson H Fox. Corner sites typically offer the most privacy and space.
Clean facilities: Many campsites maintain proper sanitation standards. At Live Oak Ridge, "The campgrounds are very clean and quiet. Everyone has been so friendly. Bathrooms are spacious and well kept," reports Olivia. Most campgrounds clean restrooms daily during peak season.
What you should know
Variable bathroom conditions: Restroom quality can differ between campgrounds and seasons. "Bathrooms seem iffy. One had intermittent water issues, not flushing. Automatic timed lights can be a pain. Especially if natural light is limited," reports Joseph C. about Wilson H Fox.
Access to water varies by site: Not all waterfront sites provide easy shoreline access. "Our experience at this park was good. It was very hot but there was a covered picnic area which helped a lot. It was difficult to get to the water from our site but doable if you did not mind a little workout," shares Bobby A.
Wildlife encounters: Paradise Acres and surrounding campgrounds host various wildlife. "Very quite and loved looking up at the stars!" notes Chris K. Deer, rabbits, wild hogs, and numerous bird species inhabit the region year-round.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "It is a very well kept campground... There is a playground, restrooms, and showers. There is also a boat dock," explains Nomadic L. about Live Oak Ridge. Most playgrounds lack shade structures.
Kid-friendly swimming: Safe swimming areas remain a priority for families. "Nice park to picnic and bird watch. Lots of birds! Swim area, fishing, hiking," reports Cathy C. about Taylor Park. Water quality monitoring occurs weekly during summer months.
Covered picnic facilities: Downtown Texas RV Park and other locations offer protection from elements. "The park is pretty nice with full hookup sites down on the bank of the San Gabriel river. The river isn't much but it's a place to escape the Texas heat," explains Mark S. Covered tables accommodate 6-8 people comfortably.
Tips from RVers
Hookup limitations: Most campgrounds offer partial hookups only. "Only 30 amp electrical hookups, does have water, and no sewer connection. Great playground for kids. Covered picnic tables. We used our access card and only had to pay $13 per night," notes Mary S. about Taylor Park.
Dump station access: Plan accordingly for waste management. "50 amp service and water, no sewer at site. Dump station is easily accessible. Camp host was very friendly," shares Roscoe's R. Most dump stations remain open from 8am to sunset daily.
Site selection strategy: Friendship Park and similar areas require planning. "This is a great place to bring the children for a picnic and a swim at the swimming beach. There are abundance of deer and rabbits, bird watching is fantastic," advises Arvis C. Reserve lakeside sites 2-3 months in advance during summer.
