LBJ National Grasslands Forest Road 904 Dispersed Camping offers free dispersed camping where pets are allowed with drive-in and walk-in access. Dogs remain welcome at all ten pet-friendly campgrounds in the Bowie area, including established RV parks like The Ooak RV Park & Campground and Camper's Paradise. Many campers have reported issues with hitchhiker burrs at some locations that easily attach to dog fur. Most sites provide basic amenities for pets including drinking water and trash disposal, though pet-specific facilities like dog parks are limited. Pelham City Park in Bowie charges $15 per night for RV sites with electric hookups and allows pets, though recent visitors note the showers initially advertised are actually reserved for paid pool users rather than campers.

The LBJ Lyndon B Johnson National Grasslands provides extensive trails suitable for dog walking with pets permitted throughout the grounds. Wise County Park offers particularly clean camping areas with spacious sites directly on the water, making it convenient for dogs that enjoy swimming. Most campgrounds enforce standard leash policies, with no off-leash areas specifically designated. During summer months, the limited shade at certain locations like The Ooak RV Park creates challenges for pets sensitive to heat. Campers frequently mention the walking trail at Wise County Park, approximately 3 miles one-way with periodic rest stops, as an excellent option for exercising dogs. Wildlife considerations include protecting pets from local fauna and preventing pet waste from contaminating the pristine lake waters that several reviewers specifically praised for their clarity.

      Boyd RV Park

Decent RV park in a Pleasant Small Town

Boyd is a true Texas small town with a pleasant hometown strip just up the road from Boyd RV Park. The small park boasts showers, a pets area, and a back area with nice country views and fields. The dog park has a good amount of space and is the nicest part of the park for stretching your legs.

It does not have a crowded vibe, and has everything to meet the basic needs of the RV or camper campers and then some. Prices are some of the best around, and if you need supplies or places to dine out, it is all a short walk away.

      Great park

A new park still growing but has been great so far! The owners are really nice and helpful and the spots are spacious! It’s a nice place to enjoy the outdoors and relax. They are pet & kid friendly! They even have a tiny home you can rent!

      The owners have big plans!

The dog park is being put in and laundry room and garden are next.

      Sanger - Denton North KOA

      Easy in, easy out

Nice large concrete spaces with plenty of room for a 44’ 5th wheel, tow vehicle and extra vehicle. Office staff was really friendly and helpful. Nice playground for kids and dog park. The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is the feeling that we were parked in an RV storage lot rather than a campground. It feels commercialized and may be a fine stop if passing through, but not a place I would go to actually camp.

      Lake Point RV Resort

      Great RV Site

We arrived late but were met by the owners with smiles on their faces. They were very helpful and got us checked in quickly. The roads are wide (gravel) and plenty of space between sites. Ours was pull through. The community center is cute! The bathrooms/showers are very clean. The dog park was perfect for my dog on a hot day! I wish there were more mature trees for shade but that’s the only thing I can think of that I would change! Also note there is no wifi in RV area. You have to go to the community center to use it. There is cable internet hookups but you have to have a router.

      Wichita Falls RV Park

      Nice RV Park

Quiet and peaceful RV Park. The ladies at the office were very helpful and friendly. They are pet friendly with a nice dog walk area. The restrooms are spacious, clean, and have large residential style showers. We couldn’t have asked for more for our weekend visit during my daughter’s softball tournament.

The Ooak RV Park & Campground

Quiet, clean, fun place to camp or be a long term resident!

We are full time campers at this RV park and absolutely love it.  It's quiet, clean and the owners are constantly improving the facilities.  It was good before but it keeps getting better.  There is a new BBQ pit area with picnic tables that was added a few months ago.  A dog park, water filling and propane filling station are in the works.  We are right across from a free public boat ramp where we can launch our kayaks with breeze.  The fishing on Lake Amon Carter is the best. There is a laundry, shower and restroom facility with keypad entry.  A convenience store that sells excellent food.  We have stayed in many parks and this is by far the best.

      Pelham City Park

RVs Only - Right next to fairgrounds

When traveling through the Bowie areas a recent addition for motorists searching for a place to stay the City of Bowie is the Pelham Park camping area. Primarily put into place for those participating in festivals, rodeos and trade weekends (held once a month on the weekend before the Second Monday), this facility is small but easy to access.

Exiting just off the main highway traveling past Bowie, highway 287, the park is just inside the city limits on your right. Those searching for this facility will notice a large Bowie Knife sculpture, the city’s tribute to their namesake before the parking area for the rodeo arena, trade grounds, city pool and camping facilities toward the far back corner.

The campground is surrounded by the park’s walking trail, some 2.5 miles in its entirety.

Spaces are designed for RV campers and have nice pull in slots for large camper units. Outdoor restroom facilities are available up a long walkway closer to the rodeo grounds, however are not ideal for those needing a quick restroom. Water fountains are located just beside the campground with clean drinking water.

During summer the pool facility is available for use at a small cost.

Reservations can be made for this facility by contacting the City of Bowie during regular office hours and are recommended as the offices are only open Monday through Friday.

      Tips:

      • call in advance, if there is a special event happening limited sites are available
      • bring a portable awning for direct sun coverage as there is no covered picnic area at each campsite, however pavilion is nearby

The grounds include established campsites with rock fire rings along a hard-packed gravel road. Sites are widely spaced throughout the grasslands, providing isolation with minimal facilities in an area where cattle often graze nearby.

    What to do

Hiking trails: The LBJ National Grasslands provides several hiking options including a 3-mile walking trail. "There is a gravel walking trail that is approx 3 miles long one way and features rest stops at intervals along the way. This trail winds through the woods and up and down the hills of the area and is definitely worth checking out," notes a visitor to Wise County Park.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple stocked ponds throughout the area provide fishing options. "We could park right next to our spot and put our boat in with the boat ramp that we could see from our spot," writes a camper at Wise County Park. Another visitor to LBJ Grasslands mentions "a lot of stocked ponds to fish in and some hiking through the different areas."

Wildlife watching: The grasslands support diverse wildlife. "See deer, armadillos, hogs, and birds," reports one camper at LBJ National Grasslands. Cattle often graze freely through the camping areas, with one reviewer noting, "Lots of steers grazing around the area and right up to the RV most mornings."

    What campers like

Lake access: Wise County Park receives consistent praise for its lake setting. "The lake is so pristine and the camping spots are fairly large and ours was right on the water," mentions one reviewer. Another states, "Such an amazing park. Very secluded and peaceful. Bathrooms are very clean and the water is clear and beautiful."

Space between sites: Campers appreciate the generous spacing at several locations. At Camper's Paradise, a reviewer notes, "This park was set in trees which is hard to find. Good cover for hot weather." For dispersed camping, a visitor comments, "The sites are a good distance between them. You can drive along the roads and look for them. We spotted 22 sites, there may be more."

    What you should know

Limited facilities: Dispersed camping requires self-sufficiency. "No bathrooms, water, etc. Pack in/pack out," explains a reviewer about dispersed camping. For water access, "There is also water available at those campsite but it's not potable so pack water in or bring a filtration system."
