      Outside Inn Campground

Great Family Trip Especially for the kiddos!!

This was our second visit to Outside Inn Campground and both times we stayed in the camper they offer as a rental. It’s the first thing you basically see when pull into the campground and when we come back next time that’s where we want to stay again. It’s perfect for a family with multiple kids and for us we had 3 adults and 3 kids and we couldn’t have been more comfortable. The owners Chris and Clair are just the best. They are so accommodating and always there if you need anything. The kids really enjoy the animals and activities they provide, especially feeding the goats when they were babies. The facilities are in exceptional condition and especially if you may have forgotten something“fire wood for us” they have that available to you as well. We can’t wait for our next trip back and are really looking forward to seeing the new changes the have in progress like the Glamping Tents and pond. Overall this was one of our best experiences as a family camping in South Carolina. Thank you again Clair for being present and patient with Avery and Albie while they were around the animals! We look forward to seeing y’all again soon!

Campground at James Island County Park

      Hidden gem for visiting Charleston

When making reservations at James Island County Park we had modest expectations, but we were going to tour Charleston most of the time, so we decided anything close to the city would be good enough. The campground turned out to be very nice. We wished we had stayed there longer to enjoy not only Charleston, but the nature beauty of the park itself. The campground is located in a huge park with lots of amenities. The sites are spacious, covered with trees, full hookups with 50 amp service. There are a lot of shaded picturesque walking and bike trails in the park. The dog park was amazingly big, with a little doggy beach for water lovers. There is a big kids playground with a fun looking spray play fountain. It is located just 15 min drive from the campground to downtown Charleston. It is a great campground to stay when visiting Charleston. We have a video on our YouTube Channel- Summertime RV Rovers- about this park- Great Campgrounds in Coastal South Carolina: Charleston and Hilton Head Island. Please check for yourself. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Campground at James Island County Park

      Awesome Place to RV Camp

We found this campground well maintained and quiet. The bath house was recently remodeled and now has air conditioning. I found it to be one of the nicest bath facilities we have ever used. The campsites have full RV hook-ups and come with a picnic table and fire ring. The park does allow pets and has a dog park with a beach; it seems like the pups were having a marvelous time playing chase on the beach. This is a County Park with trails for walking or leisure biking. A new water park is under construction and should open this summer. The camp store is well stocked and the staff was very friendly and helpful. One downside was the WIFI (one of the perks at this place) did not work the entire 5 days we were there. I need to work remotely so this was a BIG problem. I had to go to the Starbucks to work...bummer! Positives were the easy drive and parking at nearby Folly Beach during the week, and the close proximity to Historic Charleston.

Campground at James Island County Park

      Perfect park setting

This is a big county park over 600 acres. We could only get reservations for two nights since there was no availability. However this was my favorite ever park to camp at. The campground is tucked in the back of the park. There’s numerous walking/biking paths and a terrific dog park with lake access. The park is very clean and well-maintained. I wish we had more time to explore this lovely, serene park.

      Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA

      Beautiful, Clean, friendly Campground

We stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin for this trip. It was a great campground. It had a pool, camp activities, hiking/nature trail. It was extremely clean and the staff was friendly. It has a lake for fishing and water activities, a dog park. It is very close to things around Charleston. We will absolutely go back.

    What to do

Fishing at Lake Moultrie: Short Stay Navy Outdoor Moncks Corner provides direct access to Lake Moultrie with excellent fishing opportunities. "Great for fishing, swimming, camping, RV, and much more. There is a swimming beach and the camp store has boat kayak rental and propane tank refill," notes Thom C.

Hiking forest trails: Francis Marion National Forest trails offer varied terrain for day hikes. "Fantastic hiking, well maintained (during normal services), and the primitive campsites are the best 'get-away' opportunity. Nature is abundant, both flaura and fauna," says Caleb.

Water activities: Paddling options range from kayaking to pedal boats at several locations. "I really enjoyed the multitude of options when it comes to outdoor activities. Kayaking, boating, paddle boarding, and fishing just to name a few," explains John N. about his experience at Short Stay.

Wildlife viewing: The area hosts diverse ecosystems with plentiful wildlife observation opportunities. "The natural surroundings offer numerous opportunities for wildlife viewing," with Matt W. adding he "explored for hours, in our trucks and by foot. It was absolutely amazing."

    What campers like

Lakefront views: Waterfront camping allows for scenic sunrises and sunsets over Lake Moultrie. "This campground is for Active and retired military and other qualified DOD employees. Very quiet and secure great fishing and beautiful sunsets," writes Alan M. about Short Stay Navy Outdoor Moncks Corner.

Natural seclusion: Some sites offer more privacy than others, particularly in Francis Marion National Forest. "My buddies and I drove our trucks off the normal road to find ultimate privacy. We didn't stay on a set camp ground, with no cell service and no one bothering us we got to simply relax," says Matt W.

Water access: Direct lake access makes water activities convenient. "The campground was clean and peaceful. Pet friendly. Dogs had a blast on the trails and finding a little hidden beach!" writes stefny A. about her experience at Short Stay.

Proximity to attractions: Many campgrounds serve as convenient bases for exploring Charleston and surrounding areas. "Good location for those wanting to visit the Charleston area without the hustle and bustle of the traffic. Close to Edisto beaches as well," notes a reviewer at Lake Aire RV Park.

    What you should know

Military status requirements: Several campgrounds near Moncks Corner have restricted access. "Heads up you must be military to stay here," warns Jenny about Short Stay, while Foster Creek RV Park has similar restrictions with a reviewer noting "Would be great but as stated you must qualify to stay."

Site conditions vary: Quality differs significantly between established campgrounds and dispersed sites. "The sites aren't huge but are clean and convenient to camp store and trails. Our site was a pull through with some nice palmettos but not a lot of privacy," mentions Greg S. about Campground at James Island County Park.

Seasonal challenges: Summer heat and insects can be intense in the region. "So bug spray is recommended to the unfortunate of us that are preyed upon by mosquitoes and the like," warns Caleb about Francis Marion National Forest camping.

Cell service limitations: Reception varies widely throughout the area. "Be prepared for almost zero cell service," notes Suzanne P. about Givhans Ferry State Park Campground, while another camper mentions "I am staying in the long term camping area and I have no WIFI connection" at Short Stay.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground accessibility: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas for children. "They have an awesome park. Can't wait to go back," shares Wendolyn P., adding that James Island County Park is "very kid friendly" with "an awesome park."

Swimming options: Look for campgrounds with swimming areas during hot months. "We stayed here for a week in the summer and loved it. Our site was very close to the lake and we had a great view. We were also right beside the pool and playground area so it was convenient to walk over," writes Ashley W.

Educational opportunities: Historical sites near campgrounds offer learning experiences for children. "In Charleston, we walked around downtown, took the ferry to Ft Sumter, toured the USS Yorktown, and visited Ft Moultrie," shares Erin S. about activities while staying at Military Park Joint Base Charleston Outdoor Recreation Center.

Seasonal activities: Some campgrounds offer special events for families. "We love camping at Short Stay. The only downfall is the geese. They leave a mess everywhere. But otherwise the people are friendly, the rates are great, and it's nice to be right on the lake," says Jessica S.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Consider both privacy and convenience when choosing sites. "IMHO the best slots in this RV exclusive campground are those on the perimeter with the best sites being the ones without anything behind them, specifically on the NW periphery with sites #46-55," advises Stuart K.

Hookup availability: Full hookups aren't universal at all campgrounds. "Sites are spacious and clean. plenty of sights to see in Charleston. It has a fantastic dog park and several miles of paved walking/biking paths," notes Terry J. about pet friendly camping options at James Island County Park.

Weather considerations: Prepare for rapid weather changes affecting site conditions. "We had 2 days of heavy rain and some sites flooded, but everything drained well," shares Joel R., highlighting the importance of site selection during rainy seasons.

Local supply options: Know where to restock provisions during your stay. "The campground is close to a ton of activities that were mentioned below. One highlight that doesn't seem to get much press is Old Downtown North Charleston Park Circle area," suggests Corby M., noting the convenience of nearby amenities.
