Moncks Corner sits in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, approximately 32 miles north of Charleston at an elevation of about 50 feet above sea level. The area features a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters, making camping possible year-round. The region between Lakes Marion and Moultrie offers campers access to the 7,500-acre Diversion Canal that connects these two significant bodies of water.
What to do
Fishing in Diversion Canal: Access prime fishing spots between Lakes Marion and Moultrie from Hill's Landing & RV Park, where you can catch striped bass, channel catfish, and bream. "Beautiful, clean, friendly and helpful staff! Out in the country located on a canal! Peaceful and quiet park. Restaurant has amazing food! Highly recommend for fishing!" notes camper Cathy P.
Hike the Palmetto Trail: Located about 5 miles from Johnston Landing Campground & Cabins, this trail offers unique views of sunken giant Cypress trees and excellent bird watching. Stuart K. shares, "One of the best hikes in all of South Carolina– the Palmetto Trial is just about 5 miles away, but is definitely worth the hike as here you'll be able to witness first hand the sunken giant Cypress trees, amazing bird watching (Ospreys and Herons in particular)."
Visit Cypress Gardens: Located near Moncks Corner, these gardens showcase the region's distinctive swampland ecosystem with boat tours through cypress tree groves. As Stuart K. suggests when staying at Hill's Landing, "Monck's Corner, which is a nice day-trip to experience the amazing Cypress Gardens."
What campers like
Secluded waterfront camping: Campers appreciate peaceful waterfront sites with wildlife viewing opportunities. At RV's Acres, Mark B. reports, "The last time I was here (4 days ago) 2 does & a fawn came lopping/walking through the property. There is a beautiful private pond on property and the owner does allow catch/release."
Full hookup convenience: Many RV parks in the area offer complete amenities to make extended stays comfortable. At Lake Aire RV Park, Corby M. notes, "K1 is an outstanding, secluded site with plenty of room for the dogs to roam, and there was plenty of shade during the day."
Proximity to Charleston: Several campgrounds serve as convenient bases for exploring the region. A Lake Aire camper shares, "Good location for those wanting to visit the Charleston area without the hustle and bustle of the traffic. Close to Edisto beaches as well which is a good spot for the beaches."
What you should know
Military-only facilities: Some campgrounds in the area have specific eligibility requirements. Regarding Foster Creek RV Park and Villas, Barbara P. cautions, "Would be great but as stated you must qualify to stay."
Interstate noise considerations: Campgrounds close to major highways may experience road noise. At New Green Acres RV Park, Mimi notes, "This is just off 95, so it's not quiet. It is green instead of gravel, so that's nice. Lots of trees and all pull thru spaces."
Weather and seasonal conditions: The area can experience high humidity and occasional flooding during rainy periods. At Lake Aire, Sara R. observed, "The tent sites were unlevel and muddy (since it rained before we arrived and all the water ran down hill to the tent sites)."
