Best Cabin Camping near Matamoras, PA

Several cabin campgrounds are available in the Matamoras region, including Mountain Top RV Park and Kittatinny Campground. Most cabins provide basic amenities such as electricity, beds, and picnic tables, while some offer additional features like heating and air conditioning. Bathroom facilities vary, with some cabins offering private bathrooms while others rely on centrally located shower houses. Rustic options typically provide simple sleeping quarters with minimal furnishings, while more deluxe accommodations may include small kitchenettes or refrigerators. According to one visitor, "The lounge room with games, a pool table, a TV and puzzles/board games" enhances the cabin camping experience.

Cabin types in the area include both rustic and modern options, with KOA-style cabins available at Neversink River Resort. High Point State Park Campground and Stokes State Forest offer year-round cabin rentals, though availability is limited during peak summer months. Most campgrounds allow pets in select cabins, but restrictions may apply. A visitor at Mountain Top RV Park noted that "the newly upgraded camp infrastructure elevated the stay, providing amenities for comfort and entertainment." Reservations should be made well in advance, particularly for weekend stays during summer months when demand is highest.

Visitors should come prepared with their own linens, pillows, and sleeping bags, as most cabins provide only bare mattresses. Kitchen facilities range from basic fire rings to more equipped options with microwaves and small refrigerators. Several campgrounds feature on-site camp stores with basic supplies, though selection is limited. Larger grocery stores can be found in nearby towns for more substantial shopping needs. Cookware, dishes, and cleaning supplies are rarely provided, so campers should pack these essentials. Firewood is available for purchase at most properties, with outside firewood often prohibited due to invasive species concerns.

Sebago Cabin Camp — Harriman State Park

No RV sites a step up from tent camping.

They have rustic cabins. Theae do not have plumbing or heat. It is a step up from cabin camping. They also have a beach behind it.

    Stokes State Forest

    Cozy Cabins and Serene Trails

Rented a cabin in November (#009) and again in December (#008) of 2021. I favored Cabin 8, the kitchen and bathroom were separated from the main room.

The cabins are reasonably priced and well-appointed, if a bit rustic. The interior features are just what you'd expect for getting away for the weekend. THe main room has a bunk bed and two twins, a table with benches, two Adirondack chairs, a wood stove set into a fireplace (some cabins still feature a fireplace only, but these two did not), hot/cold water, electric stove with oven, refrigerator, toilet, bathroom sink, mirror, plenty of hooks to hang jackets and coats, storage cabinets in the kitchen area, overhead lighting, wall outlets, and screened windows.

The doors feature deadbolt locks - so be sure to always take the key or set the lock to be unlocked all the time.

The mattresses are vinyl covered, so you can wipe them down with your own sanitizing wipes. There was hand sanitizer in each cabin as well.

Outside is a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. There are hooks near the door to hang a lantern.

The park office is not nearby, about 2(?) miles away. They sell wood, and there are a few road stands near the campground, but that wood is wet. You'll need to find some birch to get your fire going if, like me, you didn't buy wood on the way (plenty of signs for wood as you approach the park office) and the office was closed upon arrival. I bought wood from a house across the street from the entrance to the cabins and it was damp, but in November, I wasn't complaining, it took awhile but I got a nice blaze going. You need that wood stove to heat up the cabin. Turning on the oven is a help, but not a good solution. The wood stove definitely heats the room up nicely. I went through two bundles of wood in one night, and could have used more in the morning. (There's plenty of fallen wood around but it was damp/raining both times I visited). The second time I took six bundles of wood and used them all from Friday to Sunday morning, and 7 would've have been better.

The trails nearby are varied, read the maps (especially NY NJ Trail Conference Maps) to get an idea of difficulty/elevation. We went in November when there was a light rain that turned into a thunderstorm with hail and sleet! It was certainly an adventure. The area was  incredibly peaceful in December with many cabin reservations abandoned due to rain in the forecast. It did rain, but was still a great trip. The photos of the tent sites were taken in December.

    Jenny Jump State Forest

    Cute Comfortable Shelter

This is the first time we decided to forgo tent camping and reserve a shelter at a state park. We had a much better experience than we were expecting! The "shelter" is what we would describe as a "cabin"; four walls, a roof, locking door, locking windows, large picture frame front window, four beds(two bunks), a wood burning stove, and a porch. Even compared to our glamping this was luxury!!

There are eight shelters at Jenny Jump State Park. Shelter 2 is a minute walk from the restroom with sink/shower and water. Shelters 7 & 8 are even closer while 4 & 5 are the furthest, may an extra 5 minutes walk? The dead end means there isn't too much traffic, though the road is right there so you can wave to the other campers heading to the restroom or for hikes. There is a trail head at one of the parking lots. During the day the parking lots filled up and there was some overflow parking for day-hikers across the road. We got to see their dogs, so that was a bonus for us! Otherwise, this shelter is not situated too close to the other shelters and feels very private.

We brought battery-powered lights since there is no electricity. There were coat hooks and a built-in shelf for our snacks, games, and other supplies. There was a picnic table and benches inside. We brought camping chairs for relaxing on the porch. We spent most of our time on the porch; cooking, chatting, and crafting while enjoying the sunshine and breeze.

Oh, this shelter is wheelchair accessible. Some of the others are not.

    Tobyhanna State Park Campground

    Good campground for families.

My dog and I stayed for 2 nights in the rustic tenting area. We were the only campers Wednesday & Thursday. The family camp area features spaces (small areas for either RV campers or tents and cars) with a picnic table and fire ring and water (some have electricity). They also have shared facilities such as bathrooms and showers. However, they seemed a little too cramped fir me and I wasn’t looking for opportunities to socialize, so the remote tent site was my choice. The tent sites do not have water or electric, but do have picnic tables, a fire ring and share one large outhouse with clean pit toilets. There are 5 sites and they can accommodate (shared) multiple tent set ups. Also you need to park your vehicle in a designated lot which is very close to the sites. There are multiple easy hiking and biking trails that are well marked. A lake for fishing and a small sandy beach with a picnic area for families (unfortunately no dogs are allowed on the beach). There are 2 boat launch areas (one for the campers, and another for gen. public) which also has a boat rental business (dogs are allowed). There are black bears in the park so do not leave food out and dispose of all trash in the appropriate dumpsters.

Delaware Water Gap / Pocono Mountain KOA

    It's a KOA

Its our first stop of many and we wanted to shake out any glitches with our new camper at a public campground. The staff are very helpful and accommodateing. This campground although dated offers all the necessary comforts-Wifi, hot showers, electric etc. Currently, there are various updates occurring: additional sites, new tiny cabins, WIFI and electric are also being modernized. We opted to relocate to a site with less construction occurring and although you can still hear back hoes etc-our view has much improved. We wish there was easier access to bike and hike trails so we didn't have to drive to a location but overall a comfortable and positive experience.

    High Point State Park Campground

    Relaxing and Well-Maintained

Stayed 2 nights and it was really nice. Camping for summer is pretty limited to Sawmill Lake, as the other locations are for groups or winter camping. Camps are secluded from each other and most if not all have an elevated space to put tents or chairs. Each place comes with a lamp hang, a fire pit, and a picnic table. Bathrooms are spaced out. No running water except for pump founded outside of the bathrooms. Toilets are pump flushed. Showers are only located INSIDE High Point State Park, not throughout the campsites, but entry is free for campers. One hiking trail is accessible in Sawmill campground, 3 others are accessible on the road outside of the campground and the rest are located inside the park. When you arrive you have to check in with the park office for your campsite tag. Hours are 8-4. Park officials come through the campsites pretty regularly, a few times a day which is nice. Areas are clean and well maintained.

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Friendly Campground

Set on a hillside, the campground has three levels. The tent sites all have water & electric, and have a picnic table and fire ring. The sites are fully shaded. Facilities were neat & clean, and there was a covered verandah with string lights, chairs & picnic tables outside the bathroom area.

Campground staff were friendly, and there was a store with firewood, ice and many other conveniences. Wifi was available, and connection was good the entire time I was there.

The campground is convenient to many hikes in the Delaware Water Gap area.

Be aware that the campground doesn't have credit card facilities, but does have an ATM in the store if absolutely necessary.

Soaring Eagle Campground and the Inn at Kellam's Bridge

I have never stayed at the Inn but have been camping on the river for 15 years

I love the property and the family that operates it. My son had his first camping trip there when he was ten days old. It is great family camp ground with amenities that are helpful to parents and new campers such as restrooms, showers, camp shop, canoe/kayak/tube rentals and designated drive in sites with fire ring and table. As well as sites with water/ electric hookup. Yet, it still manages to maintain a more remote and rustic feel by preserving the trees, stream and riverfront property in a mutual state without concrete pads or driveways. There is no commercial aspect that I find when at most “family” parks with pools, arcades and cabins. The sites are larger than most campgrounds and well spaced out. I have been there on busy holiday weekends where it was full but still peaceful and private with a great community of campers and on weekdays and off weekends when it felt as if I had the river to myself. I have never had a bad experience in at least 20 trips.

    Camp Taylor Campground

Great as long as you behave

Having been here on a few occasions I will say it is def a beautiful spot in many regards. However, there are some downsides.

Positives: sites are decent sized with fire pits and picnic tables. easy access to hiking, convenient to a beautiful vineyard, peaceful region, and the most amazing wolf preserve is right next to you.

Negative: limited access to firewood. sites are picked clean, quiet hours are strongly enforced- which can be a good thing depending upon who you are, the lake is anything but refreshing.

Guide to Matamoras

Cabin accommodations in the Matamoras area range from basic shelters to more modern units across several campgrounds. Located in the Pocono Mountains region where Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey converge, cabin campers experience elevation changes between 400-1,800 feet and moderate temperatures that typically range from 30°F in winter to 80°F in summer. Water features including the Delaware River and smaller lakes provide natural focal points for many cabin camping locations.

What to do

Tubing and rafting adventures: At Kittatinny Campground, water activities are popular with visitors. "My college friends go here each year to meet up and we have so much fun. The group sites are great and perfect for our 30-50 people. Definitely go for the rafting/tubing package, it was the best part of the trip!" notes Maggie K.

Hiking trails nearby: Cabins at Stokes State Forest provide access to extensive trail networks. One visitor mentions, "There are 21 marked trails that cover over 63 miles within the boundaries of Stokes State Forest. Twelve miles are part of the Appalachian Trail." Multiple trail difficulty levels accommodate different hiking abilities.

Fishing opportunities: Many cabins sit near stocked fishing areas. One guest at Kymers Camping Resort notes, "There's a pond stocked with 2-3 types of fresh water fish," making it convenient for anglers staying in cabins to fish without traveling to other locations.

What campers like

Private cabin settings: Ocquittunk offers cabins in quieter settings. "The sites had a fire ring with a cooking grate and a picnic table and were well spaced out from other sites. The views of the lake are nice, very peaceful," shares Catherine S.

Game rooms and indoor activities: At Mountain Top RV Park, indoor amenities enhance cabin stays during inclement weather. One visitor explains, "There's also a nice lounge room with games, a pool table, a TV and puzzles/board games."

River and lake views: Many appreciate cabins with water views. Kara L. describes her experience: "We stayed at site #T007, it was a short walk from the car to the site, but so worth it for many reasons. The site itself is huge and we were able to position our tent facing the lake, it was beautiful!"

What you should know

Winter cabin preparation: For cold weather stays in Matamoras area cabins, heating systems vary significantly. At High Point State Park Campground, cabins offer more protection from elements. One winter visitor notes, "The cabins look very nice inside" but warns campers should "bring a sleeping pad" for comfort.

Bathroom facilities: Cabin bathroom access varies by location. One camper at Stokes State Forest explains, "Each campground has its own porta potty or it shared with a couple other sites. At the entrance of the campground, there is a bathhouse with running water, bathrooms, and potable water."

Reservation timing: Weekend cabin bookings fill quickly, especially for lakeside units. A visitor at Pickerel Point Campground observed, "We had site 100 and amazing views of the water from our camper," suggesting water-view cabins are premium locations that require advance planning.

Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-friendly amenities: Neversink River Resort offers family-oriented cabin options with entertainment for children. A visitor shares, "They had the bounce pillow and a small pool. It could benefit from some sprucing up. If I was passing through the area and needed a place to stay, I would stop here."

Farm experiences: Some cabins near Matamoras offer unique agricultural settings. At Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort, families appreciate the animal interactions. One camper notes, "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool."

Winter activities: For cold-season cabin camping with kids, choose locations with indoor spaces. W.L. describes Stokes State Forest cabins: "The cabins are reasonably priced and well-appointed, if a bit rustic. The interior features are just what you'd expect for getting away for the weekend. The main room has a bunk bed and two twins, a table with benches, two Adirondack chairs, a wood stove set into a fireplace."

Tips from RVers

Site selection for cabin camping: When booking cabin accommodations near Matamoras, RVers recommend checking site conditions carefully. At Oakland Valley Campground, David S. notes: "Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because the sites were a bit difficult to back into and unlevel. Otherwise a very nice place to relax."

Seasonal considerations: Weather patterns affect cabin accessibility differently than RV sites. A visitor at Kymers Camping Resort described their experience: "Shady sites. Nice pool. In a pretty area of NJ." The shaded nature of many cabin sites means they remain cooler in summer but may feel darker during spring and fall.

On-site deliveries: Some cabin campgrounds offer delivery services that benefit both RV and cabin campers. Jason G. at Mountain Top RV Park mentioned infrastructure improvements: "The newly upgraded camp infrastructure elevated the stay, providing amenities for comfort and entertainment."
