    Grins & Pickin's CampFarm

Great area away from the busy park campsites

G&P is exceptionally well maintained with 31 sites of varying sizes. Owner is extremely welcoming and prices are good. Front and rear Porto bathrooms for use.

    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Cozy

Some of the sites are small so you have to be careful which you site you reserve if you’re a tent camper. The outside of the circle is your best bet and there’s a few scattered in the middle. If you can get a good middle spot it’s nice if you have kids since there’s a playground, swings, basketball, and tether court. No running water for bathrooms if that’s important for you. The park is also just off a country road so traffic can occasionally be heard but it’s not excessive. Grounds are very well maintained and the hosts were very nice.

    Great peaceful campground

This is our second time coming here really enjoy this place it's typically more of a quiet relaxed camp there is a playground in each of the 4 sections for kids to play with a remodel shower house at each one. Att works good here verizion not so much but at night when people are sleeping verizion gets a little better.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Nice park but some traffic noise

Spent three nights here while we were visiting friends in Lewis Center. We stayed in F09 and it was a great spot. Lots of protection on both sides so it was very secluded. And close to the shower house. Only reason I didn’t give this five stars was there was still quite a bit of traffic noise around the park that you could hear. Some nice hiking trails as well. Campsite was nice and level. Showers were super clean and awesome water pressure.

    Mt Gilead State Park Campground

    Small, quiet campground

We like this small campground, it works well for us. Our pad was pretty level and not hard to back into with a small camper. however, a lot of the pads are at 90° angles instead of 45° so it can be harder for a larger camper back in. The full hook up side the sites are really tight together. The electric only sits are spread out a little more. Some have decent shade while others have none at all. Our site was really nice and had space for a tent or you could hang from a hammock. Great camp store, playgrounds, frisbee golf, hiking paths and small lake.

    Indian Lake State Park Campground

    Lots of sites

Our pad was not level front to back so we had to adjust a little bit. The fire ring was nice but our picnic table was beat up. I went to move it and the seat pulled right off. We stayed on a Sunday night so it wasn’t packed. There are a ton of sites. Some had great shade and others didn’t have any at all. The bathrooms were flush toilets and they did have shower houses too. The camp store is really big and it’s right next to their pool. They have a dog park, place to dock your boat and a small beach. I would imagine this would be a pretty busy during the summer.

    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Small and peaceful

We stayed one night on our way to IN. We’ve never been here before and wanted to check it off our list. It’s a small campground with one side as equestrian and the other side not. All sites had electric and water, no full hookup. There were only drop toilets and no showers. They were clean but I don’t think I’d want to do more than a weekend there. It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding. They also had a dog park and small wildflower garden. The check in cabin had ice and wood for sale but no store. Our site was really nice. The pads were recently paved and had a huge bumper at the end. The fire ring was nice and the site had plenty of space for tents.

    Resting Roost

Okay for one night I guess

We were kind of stuck, looking for a place to stay as we didn’t have reservations during Labor Day weekend so found this place that was listed on Hip Camp. Near Belle Center. PROS- was relatively cheap, $24,out in the middle of fields so pretty quiet, host seems pretty nice. CONS- had to back up a 100 yard driveway, lots of bugs, smells as they just fertilized the fields (not the owners fault). Okay for setting up a tent or a small rig but wouldn’t advise for trailers. Electric was an extension cord. I think water is available. Owner could have mowed the place a bit.

Hiking trails: The trail system at Delaware State Park Campground offers various interconnected paths. According to a visitor, "Many of the trails link together so you can decide how long you want to hike. The Lakeview Trail was perfect for us as our dog loved jumping in the water during our hike."

Cave exploration: Unique geological features provide unusual camping experiences. At Zane Shawnee Caverns & Southwind Park, visitors can explore underground formations when the caves are open, though one reviewer noted, "The restaurant/cafe, stage, and cave were closed while we were there," suggesting seasonal operation.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Site dimensions receive consistent praise at many locations. A camper at Back 40 Campground mentioned, "The sites are large. Most have water and electricity. Nice amenities like a clubhouse with pool tables, clean flush toilets and shower areas, a nice small lake for swimming."

Lake access: Water proximity enhances camping experiences for many visitors. One camper at Alum Creek State Park Campground observed, "We stayed in L and the kids loved being close to the water. The campground beach is an absolute must."

Wooded privacy: Tree coverage creates natural separation between sites at some campgrounds. A Delaware State Park visitor shared, "The best thing about this campground is the fact that all the sites have privacy. There are nice trails to walk and the bathrooms are the best I've seen at a campground."

What you should know

Weather impacts: Heavy rainfall significantly affects camping conditions. At Welcome Woods RV Campgrounds, flooding can occur after storms, with one camper reporting, "When we first arrived to the campground we originally were a little nervous but learned looks can be deceiving."

Varying bathroom facilities: Restroom quality differs dramatically between campgrounds. One visitor at Ohio State Eagles Family Recreation Park appreciated that the staff are "extremely helpful with anything you need and they go the extra mile even if all you need is to dump your tanks."

Seasonal limitations: Many facilities close during winter months. A camper at Resting Roost noted practical challenges: "Near Belle Center. PROS- was relatively cheap, $24, out in the middle of fields so pretty quiet, host seems pretty nice. CONS- had to back up a 100 yard driveway, lots of bugs."

Tips for camping with families

Organized activities: Some campgrounds offer scheduled events for children. A visitor to Back 40 reported, "Plenty of activities right on property including fishing with awesomely stocked ponds, a great playground, huge open field for baseball, soccer or anything activity you can dream up and a lodge with activities including pool, foosball and crafts."

Beach access: Swimming areas provide recreation for children. At Indian Lake, a camper shared, "Indian Lake State Park is my close to home camping get away. Right on Indian lake, you can enjoy the beach, boating, swimming, fishing and relaxing. Last year, the state park added a nice inground swimming pool."

Playground options: Play areas give children space to burn energy. A Delaware State Park visitor mentioned, "This is probably our favourite state park we have been to thus far. We went camping early October in tents. It was cold but it was so much fun."

Tips from RVers

Dump station access: RVers should note varying sewage disposal options. At Love's RV Hookup in Bellefontaine, a visitor reported, "A little loud at times. Hardee's restaurant is a different option for meals," highlighting the tradeoff between convenience and noise at this roadside option.

Utility hookups: Electric service varies between campgrounds. Alum Creek offers "several full hook up sites" while many others provide electric-only connections. A visitor noted, "From what I've been told you might be able to get into one [lakefront site] if you book the whole season a year in advance."

Pad conditions: Surface quality affects RV setup and stability. At Indian Lake, "Our pad was not level front to back so we had to adjust a little bit. The fire ring was nice but our picnic table was beat up."
