Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Northwood, OH

Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA's fenced dog park provides a designated space for pets to exercise off-leash while camping near Northwood, Ohio. The campground accommodates pets in all accommodation types including tent sites, RV spots, and cabins. Pet owners must keep dogs leashed throughout the common areas of the campground, and sites include fire rings and picnic tables where families can relax with their pets. The small but functional dog area remains one of the driest spots in the campground during rainy weather, making it particularly valuable for pet exercise when conditions are wet. Campground bathrooms stay clean and updated, while sites offer full hookups with cable and WiFi for guests traveling with pets. Several pet-friendly camping options exist in the region, including Maumee Bay State Park Campground and White Oak Campground, both maintaining pet-friendly policies.

Blue Heron Ohio Turnpike RV Lot offers convenient overnight pet-friendly camping with electric hookups and dump stations for travelers passing through the region. The rest area provides 24-hour access to food and clean restrooms while maintaining a safe environment for campers with pets. Wildlife sightings, including blue herons and deer, enhance the natural setting for short stays with pets. Sterling State Park Campground and East Harbor State Park Campground extend additional pet-friendly options with more extensive facilities for longer visits, including showers and water hookups. Campers report occasional wildlife encounters, making it essential to keep pets properly leashed and supervised. During summer months, the grassy areas between sites at many local campgrounds provide adequate space for exercising leashed dogs, though mosquitoes can be problematic in areas with standing water.

    Sandusky-Bayshore KOA

    Nice campground

We have stayed here twice and will definitely be back. Both times at the end of September. Nice campground, friendly staff, store is well stocked for anything you may have forgotten. The playground and jump mat for kids is awesome. They usually have some kind of activity for kids on weekends. We travel with 2 large Labrador retrievers and love being able to let them play off leash in the kamp k9 dog park. The sites are a little close together and the train is loud but other than that, it’s a wonderful place to stay. Very close to Cedar Point.

    Wagner Subscriber Campout

We stayed at this campground in the group camp area. The sites are tight but do provide water and 30 amp electric.

The campground offers a pond for fishing , swimming pool , bounce pad , inflatable lake fun, dog park and mini golf.

Since we were there as a group event we didn’t use any of the extras but it all looked nice and clean plus lots of fun.

Cell coverage was spotty but you could usually get some kind of signal.

The campground has a lot of seasonal sites as well as primitive tent camping and standard rv sites.

Nice Campground for a Group Event

This is our second time camping here and both times were for a group camping event. For this type of event it’s a great park. We had a whole sector the event with water and electric sites.

If we were going to camp here on our own I am not sure I would like it since it’s mostly set up for seasonal campers. So there are no hiking trail and there is also a lot of golf cart traffic.

They do offer a swimming pool , pond with inflatable slides , dog park , bound pad and miniature golf.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

Guide to Northwood

Camping areas near Northwood, Ohio border Lake Erie's western basin, approximately 15 miles east of Toledo. The region features flat terrain with an average elevation of 620 feet above sea level. Summer camping typically sees temperatures between 75-85°F with high humidity, while spring and fall months offer cooler conditions with occasional rain.

What to do

Beach activities: Sterling State Park Campground offers a sandy beach on Lake Erie that's perfect for dogs and their owners. "The park also has several public access areas and beaches. Hiking and biking trails are also present and the bathroom facilities are clean and well maintained," notes Edward C. The park remains open from April through early November.

Birding opportunities: White Oak Campground provides access to Oak Openings park with diverse habitats for bird watching. "Oak openings has everything from pine tree forests to sand dunes," mentions Sherrie W. The Scout Trail runs directly through the campground, offering 15.5 miles of hiking with excellent wildlife viewing.

Water recreation: Fishing and kayaking options abound for pet owners at East Harbor State Park Campground. "The location of the camp ground puts you right on Lake Erie and close to great locations such as Put in Bay, Kelly's island and cedar point," reports Elijah G. The park features both pond fishing and lake access points where pets can accompany their owners.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA maintains well-kept grounds and amenities. "Bathroom clean. Friendly people," notes Henry O. The campground features individual bathrooms with private showers, sinks, and toilets that are regularly serviced.

Spacious sites: Many campsites in the area provide adequate room for pet setups. "Sites are large, level, and grassy with vegetation barriers between sites with mowed buddy site access at back of each site," writes Chris A. about Maumee Bay State Park Campground. This configuration allows pets to remain within site boundaries while maintaining separation from neighboring campers.

Convenient access: Blue Heron Ohio Turnpike RV Lot provides straightforward overnight stays for travelers with pets. "Simplicity at its finest. Highway stop is open 24 hrs so you have food and bathrooms all night. Everything is bright, nice and clean and feels very safe," shares Randall K. The lot offers electric hookups for $20 per night, allowing pet owners quick overnight accommodations.

What you should know

Site selection matters: Different campground sections offer varying levels of shade and privacy. "The key is site selection at East Harbor...Section C was nice, though in hot sunny days there is very little shade to protect you. The other sections of the park have tall shade trees that work out great," advises Mark S. Research specific loops when making reservations at pet-friendly campgrounds.

Seasonal considerations: Sterling State Park Campground experiences insect activity during summer months. "Everything great- except may flies! First two nights were perfect but then the may flies hatched (in mid june) and covered everything," reports Kourtney D. Plan pet-friendly camping visits in spring or fall to avoid peak insect seasons.

Wildlife awareness: Local campgrounds feature active wildlife that pet owners should monitor. "Wildlife sightings, including blue herons and deer, enhance the natural setting for short stays with pets," states a review. Keep pets leashed and supervised, particularly at dusk when deer become more active.

Tips for camping with families

Activity options: Harbortown RV Resort provides extensive recreation for families with pets. "This campground has everything! Go carts, playground, disc golf, pool, ext... If you have kids it is perfect!" shares Noel L. The resort allows pets while offering entertainment for all family members.

Budget management: Some area campgrounds charge additional fees beyond the base rate. "Sites are a bit cramped, think it is ridiculous to pay extra each night for each pet and children, too many other campgrounds in our area that are more updated and reasonably priced," notes Nicole A. Check pet fees when comparing total costs between campgrounds.

Halloween camping: Monroe-Toledo North KOA offers special seasonal events popular with families and their pets. "I've been going to this campground for years, but mainly for the Halloween camping. It's a fun time of the year to go and the kids always have a blast. Most sites decorate and some site go all out with haunted houses," explains Ryan M. These themed weekends typically run from late September through October.

Tips from RVers

Site surfaces: Pet owners should note ground conditions when selecting sites. "Our site was $59.95 a night. We had Full hook-up with a gravel pull-through," explains Julia H. about Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA. Gravel sites drain better during wet conditions, providing cleaner environments for pets.

Layout considerations: East Harbor State Park Campground offers varying site configurations. "Site D10 was massive, had a creek running alongside of it. And was hidden behind lots of trees," reports Brendan B. End-of-loop sites typically provide more space and privacy for RVers with pets, though require earlier reservations.

Utilities placement: Connection locations can affect setup convenience. "Full hookup but sewer connection was at very back of spot. We used dump station," notes Jackie M. about Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA. Position your RV strategically based on utility locations to maximize usable outdoor space for pets.
