    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Camping near Kilbourne, Ohio ranges from developed campgrounds with full hookups to wooded tent sites and cabin accommodations, all within central Ohio's state park network and private resorts. Alum Creek State Park Campground, located just minutes from Kilbourne, offers wooded sites with electric hookups, full-service amenities, and access to a large reservoir popular for boating and fishing. Delaware State Park Campground, approximately 10 miles north, provides spacious sites with a unique "pod" layout that campers praise for privacy and convenience. The region includes several private campgrounds like Cross Creek Camping Resort and Berkshire Campgrounds that cater to RV travelers with full hookups. Tent campers, RV enthusiasts, and those seeking cabin accommodations will find suitable options within a 20-mile radius of Kilbourne.

Reservation requirements vary significantly across the area's campgrounds, with most state parks requiring advance booking through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources reservation system. According to camper reviews, October weekends at Ohio state parks are particularly popular, often requiring reservations months in advance. "Delaware State Park is a gem in the Ohio state park system. What is amazing to us is how few people seem to know it exists!" noted one reviewer. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the region, with multiple reviewers mentioning good coverage for both Verizon and Sprint carriers. Weather considerations include potential flooding at lakeside sites during spring months and occasional summer storms that may prompt use of the storm shelters available at some parks.

Many campgrounds in the area feature water-based recreation as their primary draw. Alum Creek Lake offers "excellent fishing, plenty of undeveloped shoreline to explore from kayaks, canoes or paddle boards and a very large beach," according to one visitor. Sites with lake views tend to book quickly, especially during summer months. Noise levels vary significantly between campgrounds, with some Alum Creek visitors noting road noise as a concern, while Delaware State Park receives praise for its quiet atmosphere despite being only "15 to 20 minutes away." Facilities range from primitive sites with vault toilets to developed campgrounds with modern bathhouses, laundry facilities, and camp stores. Most state park campgrounds near Kilbourne feature spacious, tree-lined sites that provide shade and privacy between neighbors.

      Pastime Campground

      Very nice campground

Pastime Campground is a nice base to explore the Columbus area. The well kept campground is part of a city park that consists of a some nice walking trails, baseball fields, sand volleyball and a pool/splash park (for a small fee). The town offers restaurants and is within walking distance. Overall a good stay.

      Tomorrow's Stars RV Resort

Staff was beyond rude and continued to harass us!

If you ever find yourself in Ohio wanting to camp don’t chose Tomorrow Stars Resorts we pulled in on Thursday afternoon a little after 2 pm everything was fine. We got up (today) Friday and had a knock on our door the host said we needed to move our camper over because we’re not in the right spot and we’re on the other site. We said we couldn’t move it over due to the tree (as pictured) if we moved in “designated” spot our slide out would be completely in the tree he said I’ll cut the tree. Left never came back. My brother and grandmother came to visit wasn’t there for maybe 5 mins and the manager/ owner came knocking and said we need to move our vehicle because he can’t rent out the other site because he’s parked on it. Then he started complaining about us moving our camper over we said the host said he’d cut the tree and he never came back. He then decided to be a smart aleck and we gave it right back and he told us to leave so we said give us a refund to which he responded “I’ll think about it” so we said okay well get our lawyer. He drove away and we started packing up and he came back waited for Greg (my husband) to walk to the back of the camper and he said we’re taking pictures just so you know and I said good I’m glad and my brother yelled we already got ours then he said he was going to charge us for the other site that my brothers car was on I hollered at Greg to tell him and the guy took off. We started talking to the people who just pulled in behind us they agreed with us and the man said “I’m banned from here because I got into it with them so my wife had to book it we’re only staying bc there’s no other places available.” So there’s clarification it’s not just us. We packed up went to the office and Greg tried to ask if he was going to charge us for the other spot or refund us our money he told Greg he’s not going to talk to him to leave and that the sheriffs on the way and Greg said “good I’m glad he is” the guy then got in Greg’s face and started yelling at him so Greg walked out and we left.

      Back 40 Campground

      Great park.

Stayed over 4th of July. Place was packed. We only stayed two days but had to pay for three. We knew this going in, and I don't blame them for requiring a 3 day stay on holidays because they're just packed; and if you only booked two days , they would lose out on a day because nobody's going to take just one day. Was worth the extra $. As to the park, it is very nice. Clean, mowed and trimmed. Great roads. There are quite a few full timers and several that rent the same slots continously and stay only part time. Access is controlled by a gate and if you arrive after 10pm you'll have to park outside in overflow and walk to your camper. We did not find this to be a problem. Narrow driveway in and out of park, RVs can't pass each other so giving way is a must. Back 40 has many sites and is very popular with the locals Several are only elect and water, quite a few appear to be full hookup, but not sure how many are permanently rented. All Rigs in the park when we stayed were well kept up - no junk ones. Internet was overwhelmed while we were there due to too many users. However we had great 5G Verizon service. Owners and staff were great. Only 2 showers in each gender. They are a bit dated but generally clean and very usable. We really enjoyed our stay and would book again should we return. We didn't have time for investigating local sites, but the Muesum of the US Air Force is a one hr drive and VERY worth the trip. It will take you 6 or 7 hrs to see it all. Highly recommend this park.

      The Caves Campground

Dyrt didn't pay for reservation, no refund

Caves is great campground. However they do not honor dyrt reservations. Had to pay at the campground. Sent email to dyrt, no reply. They owe me 400 dollars, and I have not heard back. Dyrt, if you honor, I will update this review- until then, DO NOT USE!!!

      Mohican Wilderness

      Return campers

We return to Mohican wilderness a few times each year and love the sites we choose right on the river.

Most sites here are wide open field sites and would not suite our style of camping.

      Bathrooms are typically clean.

      Tee Pee Family Campground

Overnight just okay - better for long term campers

We were traveling home and needed a place to stay for the night and hoped for full hookup.  Looked up and found this place and another that was reportedly 3x the number of sites who was having a big hog roast that evening.  This was the largest campground we stayed at during our 2 week trip and our first RV trip generally.  The spaces were close (tight) and thankfully we had a small class C.  Many seemed to be permanent with full builds of patios and covers.  Firepits at each site were old tire rims.  Quiet hours are late (11 PM) and we are not late people.  Probably fine if you want to spend time engaging with everyone around you, you sleep well and have good sound dampening in your rig.  For the occasional overnight to just get home or to the next place, take this place for what it is, a place for long term campers ideally with kids.  Was a good learning opportunity to avoid such places in the future.

    Guide to Kilbourne

Kilbourne, Ohio sits at approximately 890 feet above sea level in Delaware County, creating a unique camping environment with four distinct seasons. Winter temperatures often dip below freezing while summer evenings typically cool to the mid-60s, making early fall the preferred camping season for visitors. Rainfall averages around 40 inches annually with May typically seeing the highest precipitation at camping sites near Kilbourne.

    What to do

Disc golf adventures: Mt Gilead State Park Campground features a challenging disc golf course that stands out from typical park layouts. "This was laid out to be a crazy course and included repelling ropes!" notes Sarah G., highlighting its unique design that appeals to both beginners and advanced players.

Fishing opportunities: The campgrounds surrounding Kilbourne offer varied fishing experiences beyond the main reservoirs. Tree Haven Campground provides a quiet alternative to larger bodies of water. "Nice quiet campground! Nice pool and playground!" mentions Robin R., making it suitable for campers seeking a more relaxed fishing environment.

Shooting sports: For visitors interested in target practice, Cardinal Center Campground offers specialized facilities. "We then went over to the shooting center and tried our luck with some silliolet and metal targets on the pistol range. They also have trap and skeet available," explains George J., describing the range options for different shooting preferences.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Delaware State Park Campground earns praise for its thoughtful site arrangement. "This is probably our favourite state park we have been to thus far... The best thing about this campground is the fact that all the sites have privacy," explains Maddy B., highlighting the natural separation between camping spots.

Clean facilities: Sunbury/Columbus North KOA Holiday maintains high standards for their amenities. "Bathroom's nice. Even have hand dryers in most of them. And baby changers... Laundry room was quite nice with very new machines," shares Gary G., noting specific facility features that campers appreciate.

Family activities: Campers consistently mention the variety of structured activities available. "We had an absolute blast at the campsite! We stayed in L and the kids loved being close to the water. The campground beach is an absolute must and we even got close to wildlife," shares Jenny C. from Alum Creek State Park Campground, describing family-friendly recreation options.

    What you should know

Cell service reality: Despite general claims about good coverage, actual connectivity varies by campground and carrier. "Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5G) seems good throughout the entire park. Best Wi-Fi I've ever had at a campground. They have Wi-Fi repeater towers everywhere you look. T-Mobile signal was good," notes Gary G. about Sunbury KOA, providing specific carrier information.

Site flooding concerns: Some camping areas near Kilbourne experience drainage issues during rainy periods. "Sites are nice with some sites able to boat up to them. Be careful with rainy weather, some sites have flooded in poor weather," warns Katelyn P., suggesting campers should check weather forecasts before booking waterfront sites.

Reservation timing tips: Berkshire Campgrounds sees high demand during peak seasons. "The price advertised on The Dyrt is incorrect. It is not $38.50/day. We paid $50.29 with full hook ups," notes Pete D., indicating the importance of confirming current rates when booking.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: When camping with children, consider proximity to play areas. "This summer my family has went to many campgrounds and by far Delaware has been our favorite. The site we were on was set back in the woods. My daughter had tons of fun exploring the woods connected to our site," shares Ashley R., describing the natural play opportunities.

Water activities: For families seeking water recreation, choose sites strategically. "We had an absolute blast at the campsite! We stayed in L and the kids loved being close to the water. The campground beach is an absolute must," explains Jenny C., recommending specific waterfront locations.

Pet-friendly trails: Grins & Pickin's CampFarm offers a more natural camping experience for families with pets. "Property was well maintained and host was super friendly! Sites are around a manicured field but with a high 'pollinators maze' in the middle that creates too privacy and sound barrier," notes Jacqueline K., describing the unique layout that benefits both children and dogs.

    Tips from RVers

Levelness considerations: Many RV sites in the Kilbourne area require adjustment. "Our pull through site was on the (inner) road, so lots of golf carts, cars and campers passing by. All pull through sites are on the road side. The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground," advises Brenda M., suggesting RVers bring proper leveling equipment.

Dump station locations: Not all campgrounds offer full hookups. "Full hookup (sewer, water, 50/30 AMP), level site, partially shaded in afternoon," Beth R. explains about Cardinal Center Campground, contrasting with Tree Haven where only "gray water hook up available," according to Tom O.

Seasonal occupancy patterns: RVers should be aware that many campgrounds near Kilbourne have long-term residents. "Many seasonal/full time residents which made for quite a bit of early morning traffic," notes Pete D. about Berkshire Campgrounds, suggesting campers seeking quieter experiences should request sites away from permanent residents.
