    Letchworth State Park Campground

A little gem with a lot to do

Cabin campers here at letchworth for the past two years. We stumbled on cabin camping at letchworth due to weekends being booked for almost the entire summer for tent spots. the cabins are spacious, with bunk beds, a stove, fridge, and a fire place. i thought they might be close together, yet they were all pretty private, with a fire ring and picnic table. There was a beautiful updated playground, and clean bathrooms. Last summer they had just opened the new nature center with guided hikes, and activities all summer long.

Great for the falls, swimming, hiking, white water rafting, kayaking and so much more!

    Watkins Glen State Park Campground

Watkins Glen State Park, New York

Campers arriving at Watkins Glen State Park are immediately captivated by its dramatic gorge scenery, where 19 waterfalls cascade through narrow stone walls. Their campsites are nestled among hardwood forests, offering a perfect balance of sunlit clearings and shady retreats. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, making it easy to prepare meals after a day spent exploring the park’s famous Gorge Trail. The park’s facilities blend rustic charm with modern comforts: clean flush toilets, hot-water showers, and convenient potable water stations. Hiking enthusiasts appreciate the interconnected trail system, which includes the popular Rim Trail for elevated views of the gorge, as well as more secluded footpaths through hemlock groves. Families particularly enjoy the nearby swimming pool and easy-access picnic areas overlooking Seneca Lake. To simplify travel logistics for out-of-state visitors, many campers opt to pre-book an airport transfer so they can arrive at Ithaca or Elmira–Corning Regional Airport and head straight to the park without the hassle of car rentals. Those planning to explore multiple stops along the Finger Lakes often choose the provider’s reliable city-to-city rides for comfortable, door-to-door transportation between destinations. All in all, Watkins Glen State Park delivers an unforgettable combination of awe-inspiring gorge hikes, well-appointed campsites, and family-friendly amenities. Campers seeking both adventure and relaxation will find this New York treasure hard to surpass.

    Flint Creek Campgrounds

Great activities, friendly hosts, full hook ups!

Close to wine country you will find this gem of a family campground. Dog and kid friendly with activities such as wagon rides, arts and crafts, movie night and various themed weekend events. The hosts were super friendly and welcoming during our entire stay. An easy back in site with full hookups (B10) backed against a row of trees and a field that provided much entertainment of squirrels and birds. There is a camp store with very reasonable prices and accepts credit cards. Wood ($4) and ice ($2) are also for sale. There are two small cabins to rent along with a couple of family tent sites. The bathrooms/showers were clean near the camp store. Amenities include a pool, mini golf ($1/person), two playgrounds, horseshoes, a recreation center with games and movies, basketball and shuffle board. There are many seasonal campers at this campground, but all seemed friendly and welcoming as well. It truly seemed like one big happy family there.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Beautiful place

Letchworth is absolutely stunning. The views are beautiful, however the scenic areas are at least a 10 minute drive from the campground. The park is massive.

There is a huge variation in site sizes. We lucked out and got a large site with privacy and an area for the kids to run around, however the site directly across from us was little more than the gravel pad and fire pit. Some of the sites are right on top of each other. Great for group camping, not so much if you want any privacy.

Only two out of the 8 loops (200 and 700 loops) have updated bathrooms (single toilet with handheld showers in half of the bathrooms). The others loops have older facilities with three traditional toilet stalls and two showers.

We loved our site but would’ve preferred to stay in a loop with the updated bath houses as we have younger children and a tent trailer.

All sites have electricity. Some loops are pet friendly, some are pet free. The camp store has a good selection of necessities, albeit expensive for discount brands. The pool is 4-5 miles down the road from the camping area.

    Would absolutely camp here again.

Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill

    Wonderful!

Great secluded tent camping (recomend numbers 7 and 8), cabins are new and ample beds and space. Camper camping is close to everything, but less privacy. Numerous pavilions that are wonderful for parties or weddings. Stunning overlook that is breathtaking (also great for weddings). Hiking, bike trails, fishing pond, playground, open fields for sports, much more!!! Great for photo shoots, weekend stress getaways etc. I live close by and visit a few times a month.

    Conesus Lake Campground

Camping with amenities, close to fun

This is your typical Mom and Pop family campground, there are rules to follow but they do not hinder on your experience. They have a well stocked camp store, boat rentals, golf cart rentals, an indoor heated pool, jump pad, playgrounds, a hiking trail and frisbee golf. The bottom portion of the campground has mostly seasonal campers and cabins. You do have to go up a pretty steep hill to get to the 'transient' camping section, but there are many pull through, level, full hook up sites to choose from. ( We had site 250 and really liked it) The bathrooms were toilet/shower combos and were very clean. Attractions close by is a drive-in with 4 different screens, many places to eat, parks ( Vitale Park was really nice), a fun center with mini golf, go carts, batting cages, laser tag and arcade. We also experienced the local flea market in Avon, NY. It's HUGE!

What to do

Hiking gorge trails: At Watkins Glen State Park Campground, the dramatic 19 waterfalls cascading through narrow stone walls create unforgettable hiking experiences. "The gorge trail is a MUST. Definitely go check this campsite out!" notes Laura L. The park offers a variety of trail difficulty levels beyond just the famous gorge path.

Military museum exploration: Sampson State Park Campground features a unique historic attraction. "It was a Naval training base during WWll... It has a Naval museum with many authentic items from that era," explains Brian O. The museum provides context about the area's military significance and makes for an educational day trip.

Water recreation: Ontario County Park offers multiple water activities within easy reach. "Marina convenience store with pontoon boat rentals, fishing, swimming, ice cream and concessions stand," lists Amanda K., highlighting the variety of water-based activities. The park's lakefront location provides easy access for both motorized and non-motorized water sports.

Wine tasting tours: The Finger Lakes region surrounds Penn Yan with dozens of vineyards. "Nearby wineries and many wine drinkers camp here along with enjoying beautiful finger Lakes," mentions Rob M. about the Watkins Glen / Corning KOA. Most tasting rooms charge $5-10 per person, often waived with bottle purchases.

What campers like

Private tent sites: The wooded areas at Ontario County Park provide seclusion not found at other campgrounds. "Great secluded tent camping (recommend numbers 7 and 8), cabins are new and ample beds and space," shares Sarah C. The natural separation between sites creates a more peaceful experience compared to open-field camping.

Clean shower facilities: Taughannock Falls State Park Campground maintains well-kept bathroom facilities. "Bathrooms are fairly clean and well maintained. For washing dishes there is a sink in each bathroom," notes Barbara S. The convenience of dish-washing stations adds functionality beyond basic shower amenities.

Warm welcome traditions: Sned Acres Campground creates memorable arrival experiences. "We loved the friendship bread when we arrived. Conveniently located close to lots of wineries," mentions Debbie C. This personal touch helps first-time visitors feel immediately welcomed to the campground community.

Level campsites: Country Charm Campground provides practical, well-maintained sites. "Excellent little country campground, with nice, large, level, shaded sites," Jason explains. The terrain preparation saves campers time during setup and creates more comfortable sleeping conditions.

What you should know

Seasonal operation varies: Many facilities limit their season. Junius Ponds operates "April 15 to October 15" according to campground information, while Cayuga Lake State Park runs "April 21 to October 23." Winter cabin options are extremely limited in the region.

Site privacy differences: Cayuga Lake State Park Campground has a mix of open and private sites. "Tent camping here felt like we were camping in a neighborhood backyard. We could hear so many different families talking," reports meg. Site selection significantly impacts the privacy experience.

Electrical hookup limitations: Power access varies widely between campgrounds. "Electric service boxes are shared in-between sites. This could pose an issue if your power cord is not long enough," warns Amanda K. about Sampson State Park. Some cabins require extension cords to reach power sources.

Water access points: Water spigots aren't always conveniently located. "There is only source for water fill up. This could end up being a very very long wait if you arrive at the same time as other campers," notes Amanda K. about Sampson State Park. Planning for water needs requires advance preparation.

Tips for camping with families

Playground amenities: Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill offers excellent play areas. "Beautiful campground. I like that there is a huge new playground for the kids and lots of area to walk around the loops if you don't want to hike the gorge trail," Lindsay C. observes. These areas provide activity options during downtime between excursions.

Swimming options: Multiple parks offer swimming facilities. "The campground is very walkable to the swimming area, which goes to 12 feet deep and has a dock to jump off of," Barbara S. reports about Taughannock Falls. Swimming areas typically operate from late June through early September with lifeguard coverage.

Arcade and entertainment: Sampson State Park provides rainy day alternatives. "Arcade room, outdoor movie screen, nice playgrounds, military museum," lists Amanda K., highlighting indoor and covered options that help during inclement weather.

Educational opportunities: Taughannock Falls incorporates learning elements. "Lots of educational posters along the way to keep you informed of what you were seeing and the history about how it was created," notes Steve W. These features help children engage with the natural environment beyond just physical activities.

Tips from RVers

Electrical hookup planning: Make sure to bring extension cords. "Electric service boxes are shared in-between sites. This could pose an issue if your power cord is not long enough," warns Amanda K. about Sampson State Park. Standard 25-foot cords may not reach all available outlets.

Navigation challenges: Some campgrounds have tight turns. "The roads within the campground were kind of tight to get through with trees and curves," Laura L. explains about Watkins Glen State Park. Larger rigs should check campground maps for potential tight spots before arrival.

Leveling requirements: Sites vary in levelness across campgrounds. "Also make sure to bring plenty of leveling blocks as some sites are far from level," Jonathan G. advises about Ontario County Park. This preparation prevents refrigerator issues and uncomfortable sleeping arrangements.

Dump station lines: Plan departure timing carefully. "Only 2 dump stations," notes Amanda K. about Sampson State Park, indicating potential backups during peak checkout times. Early morning or late evening dump station visits help avoid waiting.
