Suffolk County offers the primary camping options near North Babylon, providing both tent and RV accommodations within a 30-minute drive. Most campgrounds in this area sit at sea level with sandy soil characteristic of Long Island's coastal geography. Summer temperatures typically range from 75-85°F during peak camping season, with higher humidity levels than inland locations.
What to do
Beach activities: 10-minute walk to Atlantic Ocean at Smith Point County Park where campsites have water and electric hookups. "Short walk to beach. Our site had a trex picnic table on a cement patio. An on-site firepit was cozy at night," reports camper Patrick C.
Lake access: 7-mile hiking loop around the lake at Blydenburgh County Park. "Great park with a nice 7 mile loop around the lake with decent fishing. Lots of horses and dogs on the trail," notes Erik R. Rowboat rentals available for fishing.
Wine country exploration: North Shore base camp at Wildwood State Park Campground. "It is right at the entrance to wine country on Long Island and has a beach on the Long Island Sound. (A little rocky on the north shore)," shares James O. Consider bringing water shoes for rocky beaches.
What campers like
Group camping: Flat, open field layout at Heckscher State Park Campground where campsites have minimal boundaries. "This place is the best around for group and family camping. The entire campground is one flat open space where some sites are full in the shade and other sites (lower numbers) have lots of sun," writes Giselle P.
Privacy: Secluded tent sites at Battle Row Campground set back from common areas. "Each site is set back off a common area so there is plenty of privacy," notes Michael M. Limited to about 5-7 tent sites total.
Wildlife viewing: Deer sightings common at several Suffolk County parks. "You get visits from the nearby deer. It is paradise," explains Tim M. about Smith Point County Park. Most common sightings occur near dusk at perimeter sites.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Green Key card needed for Suffolk County parks. "Suffolk County is really the only RV friendly place. Worth buying green key card for resident access. $200 but you'd spend that 4 nights regardless," mentions Maria P. Card provides significant discounts for county residents.
Site selection: Corner locations offer more space at several campgrounds. At Smith Point County Park, "I also like the corner sites as they are bigger. The 230-70 overlook the ocean which is great. Little pricey compared to NYS parks," advises Stephen P.
Insect preparation: Heavy mosquitoes near water at most locations, particularly Watch Hill and Fire Island areas. "Take the good stuff. There are park rangers on site and have excellent programs for kids," warns Inocencia O. about Watch Hill's mosquito situation.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Central locations at multiple parks with varying equipment quality. "Wildwood State Park has a playground just for the campground," notes Giselle P. Cathedral Pines offers additional play spaces but requires longer walks from some sites.
Limited privacy: Open campground layouts at several locations mean children frequently cross through sites. At Heckscher State Park, "There is no distinguishing separation between each site nor a designated driveway for your car- you merely pull up on the grass. It's basically like camping in your local city park," explains Ellen C.
Safety and supervision: Regular ranger patrols at Watch Hill Fire Island Campground provide additional security. "Rangers came around checking on everyone often so it really did feel incredibly safe," confirms Jessica C. Rangers also offer educational programs for children at select locations.
Tips from RVers
Hookup options: Full service availability varies significantly between parks. "Very clean campgrounds lots of space. Not much to do inside the grounds," shares Maria P. about Blydenburgh Park, which offers water, electric and sewer hookups for RVs.
Site dimensions: Limited big rig access at several campgrounds, particularly Battle Row which lacks pull-through sites. Southaven County Park offers more spacious options: "Great sites, get there early in the camping season and there is a lot of free firewood, a nice bennie!" advises Ken P.
Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects several campgrounds. "The campground is located near a shooting range...I heard someone say it was a 'skeet range.' So every so often you would hear a gun shot, which was pretty startling at times," reports Kari M. about Southaven County Park.
