Best RV Parks & Resorts near Rockaway, NJ

Mahlon Dickerson Reservation near Jefferson features 50-amp electric service with water hookups on mostly level paved sites spread throughout a wooded setting. Sites accommodate mid-sized RVs with convenient water spigots, though extra water hose length may be needed. Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort in Sussex provides full hookups including 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections for larger rigs, operating seasonally from April through October. For travelers seeking proximity to urban areas, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City maintains 90 designated RV spaces with water and electric hookups, though campfires are not permitted on-site. NWS Earle RV Park offers concrete pads with full hookups and attached concrete patios, with sites arranged for big rigs. "The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups."

Most RV parks in the region require advance reservations, particularly on summer weekends when occupancy reaches capacity. Navigation to mountain campgrounds like Mountain Top RV Park demands careful driving due to narrow access roads with potential sharp turns. Cell service varies significantly across parks, with Panther Lake described as "a black hole of signals" by one camper, while Mahlon Dickerson typically maintains 1-2 bars of AT&T service. Between April and November, RV travelers find the greatest number of operational facilities, as some parks close during winter months. Dump stations are available at several locations including Mahlon Dickerson, though not all parks offer this amenity—NWS Earle features concrete pads with sewer connections, eliminating the need for dump station visits. For travelers with pets, most parks accommodate dogs with designated walking areas, though some maintain specific pet-friendly and pet-free camping sections.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Mt Vista Campground

Beautiful Campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park. Love the Campground except our site is near a fairly busy road which takes away from that beautiful tranquility. They have camouflaged it as best they could. Friendly staff. Lots to do. Pool, tennis. Sauna, pond for fishing ( catch & release ). Would definitely recommend.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

The Pines Campground — Promised Land State Park

Quiet, just remote enough, a Great Lake, and nice camp hosts

I stayed for three nights in a pull through trailer site with 50 AMP and 30 AMP electric. Easy to get in and out of, nice and shady, big spaces so you were not on top of one another, and nice and quiet. Clean and modern bath house, water close by, and great camp hosts. Definitely recommend it.

Lower Lake Campground Northwoods Area — Promised Land State Park

    Northwoods Campground

Big sites with 30 amp service available for RVs and trailers. Each site has a large picnic table and a fire ring with an adjustable grate. The pull-through sites don’t offer much in the way of privacy, but that’s the trade off for convenience. There are two potable water spigots in the campground. The bathhouse offers warm showers, 2 dishwashing sinks, and a coin-operated washer and dryer. The facilities are kept very clean. On the weekends it can get pretty crowded, so it tends to be louder at night then, but the camp hosts and the rangers do a good job of enforcing quiet hours. Access points to several trails are very near the campground. As with all PA state parks, alcohol is prohibited. The park doesn’t have a camp store, however, there is a small general store on Route 390 (The Lake Store) just north of the park that would have any essentials you may have forgotten, as well as ice for your cooler.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

    Jerry's Three River Campground

    Friendly and fun!

I have been camping at Jerry’s for over 10 years now. The owner is friendly and stops to chat often with us each time we go. The campground is VERY rustic with little to no amenities. There are tent sites, seasonal sites for RVs, group tent & RV sites and group/pavilion sites. There are little to no sites with electric/water hook ups however, there is a centrally located water spout to use. There are bathrooms/wash houses- they are cleaned once or twice a day but honestly, they get filthy. Jerry’s is a good place for a great time with friends; large groups usually visit Jerry’s year after year. No one bothers you and everyone respects the rules, most of the time. ☺️ We have taken our children there often but I wouldn’t recommend or call it family friendly. The location is beautiful and about 2 hours from NYC.

Guide to Rockaway

The Rockaway area of northern New Jersey sits at approximately 800 feet above sea level in the Highlands region, characterized by rolling forested hills interspersed with small lakes and streams. Summer temperatures typically range from 60-85°F with moderate humidity, while fall camping brings cooler 40-65°F temperatures with vibrant foliage displays. Winter conditions can drop below freezing with occasional snow accumulation affecting campground access and water availability.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation provides direct access to multiple hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. "There are plenty of trails, water (creeks, pond, lake) views and even if the place is packed there is PLENTY of room," notes John S. The reservation connects to the larger trail system offering various terrain options.

Farm animal interactions: Families can interact with farm animals at Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort in Sussex. "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," reports Faith D., while another visitor mentions "animals to feed (goats, chickens, donkey and pony)" as a highlight for children.

NYC excursions: For campers wanting to explore New York City, Liberty Harbor RV Park provides strategic access to Manhattan. "There is a ferry 100-yards away that takes you to Wall Street M-F. There is a great market about 1/4 of a mile away, and the path that can take you to WTC or 33rd Street area is only a mile away," notes Shawn B., making day trips convenient.

What campers like

Spacious wooded sites: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation earns praise for its site layout and natural setting. "The sites are paved and mostly level. They are wooded and large," states Jeff W., while Christina L. reports, "The sites are very large and I suggest site 7. It is on a hill so have a hand truck or a few people to carry stuff. Trust me it is worth it."

Privacy and seclusion: Many campers appreciate the sense of solitude available at certain campgrounds. Greg S. notes about Mahlon Dickerson, "Our site is easily the nicest- all the way in the back with only one neighbor. It is so quiet here... The sites are spaced well and have a nice bonus of large fire rings set back in the woods a bit from the pad that you park on."

Military campground option: Active and retired military personnel can access NWS Earle RV Park, which offers premium amenities. "Small campground W/ 8 spaces in the main area and 7 in an adjacent area. All spaces are level concrete With fill hookups and attached concrete patio," explains Jeffrey, who also notes "Laundry facilities are free for use and in like new condition."

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Mobile coverage varies widely across the region's campgrounds. At Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South, Nick E. reports, "Cell service is awful for AT&T and our T-Mobile gateway. Had to move to a new site to get away from the trees to get starlink connectivity," while Jim G. warns that "cell service for most providers is practically non-existent."

Varying shower facilities: Bathroom and shower quality differs between properties. Coffee&Camping T. reports about Pleasant Acres Farm: "There are 2 showers for women and 2 for men. Both are old and not well maintained or in our experience clean, either," contrasting with more positive reports at other parks.

Winter operations limited: Many RV parks near Rockaway, New Jersey close completely during winter months. Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South operates from May through October, and several other parks have similar seasonal schedules, though a few like Mahlon Dickerson remain open year-round with reduced services.

Tips for camping with families

Playground considerations: When selecting campgrounds for children, assess playground quality and location. At Mountain Top RV Park, one camper notes, "They have a small playground that would be better suited for older children, and there's also a nice lounge room with games, a pool table, a tv and puzzles/board games."

Activity availability: Family-friendly campgrounds typically offer scheduled events. Jason G. describes Mountain Top RV Park: "The family-friendly atmosphere was evident through the thoughtfully designed property, including an updated pool, playground, game room, and a brand-new pickleball court that added a unique touch to the stay."

Mixed enforcement of rules: Be aware that rule enforcement varies across rv parks near Rockaway. At Pleasant Acres, one visitor observed, "Children of the residents run free all day and past curfew in the evenings unsupervised," while others note strict enforcement of quiet hours elsewhere.

Tips from RVers

Navigation challenges: RV drivers should prepare for potentially difficult access roads to some campgrounds. For Tri-State RV Park, BENdejo ~. provides specific directions: "Ext 53. Straight at the light. Drive all the way down to the end of the road," while others mention narrow mountain roads requiring careful driving.

Site selection strategy: When booking at first-come, first-served parks, arrive with a strategy. Jim G. shares about Timothy Lake South: "This is a first-come, first-serve park in the Thousand Trails system so we had to drive around looking for a spot. The check-in process alerted us to the sites that had issues such as no water or cable(there were 5 or 6 of them)."

Water connection planning: Water hookup configurations may require additional equipment. At Mahlon Dickerson, a camper advises, "The water hoses provided are plenty long. We didn't need to use our hose at all, just the filter," suggesting that standard equipment is generally sufficient despite varied spigot placements.
