Best RV Parks & Resorts near Morris Plains, NJ

Morris Plains offers several RV accommodations within a 30-mile radius, including Mahlon Dickerson Reservation with its paved, level sites featuring 50-amp electric and water hookups. The RV section has well-spaced sites but lacks fire rings, providing only raised grills. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers 90 RV sites with full hookups, though it's essentially a parking lot with minimal amenities but excellent NYC access. Mountain Top RV Park provides big-rig friendly spaces with full hookup options and allows fires. "The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose reels to help with that."

RV parks in the region typically maintain seasonal operations, with many closing between November and April. Dump stations are available at Mahlon Dickerson and other parks, though sewer hookups vary by location. Cell service can be inconsistent throughout the area, particularly in more wooded campgrounds. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, navigating the roads to Liberty Harbor RV Park requires experience, as one visitor noted: "Getting in and out is not for someone in a brand new 45' travel trailer. Know your rig and know how to maneuver it in tight spaces." Most parks accommodate pets but verify specific restrictions before arrival. Reservations are highly recommended during summer and fall foliage seasons when availability becomes limited.

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Deceiving Website

We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a“Premium” site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked…

    THINGS I LIKED:

    1. Super-friendly staff, especially Allie, who was courteous and seemed to try to make things right

    2. Lots of mature shade trees

    3. DJ at the pool Saturday and Sunday and live band Saturday evening

    4. Close proximity to Delsea Drive-in Theatre and Cohenzick Zoo

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    1. I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad. When I called the office, assuming there must’ve been a mistake, I was told by two different staff members that their website is“wonky.” I wouldn’t mind as much, but this weekend was 90-degrees each day and humid, so it would’ve been good to have air conditioning.

    2. The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere

    3. This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45’ motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed

    4. I paid$432 for 3-nights and feel like I was taken

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

Nope. I’m sticking with campgrounds that give you what you paid for.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

Pros Great People beautiful surroundings Nice Bathrooms Quiet and Peaceful Accessible Nice Pool Every store U could Need is in about 15 mins Away Not Alot of Stupid rules just Be respectful Pet friendly

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Mt Vista Campground

Beautiful Campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park. Love the Campground except our site is near a fairly busy road which takes away from that beautiful tranquility. They have camouflaged it as best they could. Friendly staff. Lots to do. Pool, tennis. Sauna, pond for fishing ( catch & release ). Would definitely recommend.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Guide to Morris Plains

Camping options near Morris Plains, New Jersey range from rustic forest settings to convenient city-access locations. The area sits within the New Jersey Highlands region at elevations between 400-1,000 feet, creating varied camping terrain with rolling hills and wooded environments. Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally from April through October, with limited winter availability due to the region's cold temperatures and occasional snowfall.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation provides direct access to numerous hiking paths, including trails to a scenic lake. "My fiancé, dog, and I have been going here for over 2 years and we love it. The campground is small but also secluded. We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful," notes Paulene-Amanda M. from Mahlon Dickerson Reservation.

NYC sightseeing: Camp within reach of Manhattan at Liberty Harbor RV Park. "The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8. Having a view of Lady Liberty out your window is priceless," shares Joe R. The park offers convenient transit options with "a ferry 100-yards away that takes you to Wall Street M-F," according to Shawn B.

Farm animals interaction: Families can enjoy animal encounters at Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort. "The farm has goats, a donkey, and a pony within the campground. Very cool," writes Faith D. Another camper adds, "There were some organized activities which was nice... Plenty to occupy the kids. Playground, hayride, animals to feed (goats, chickens, donkey and pony)."

What campers like

Views of NYC skyline: Liberty Harbor RV Park provides unique urban camping with city views. Keith and Tia S. explain it's "all about location. The closest RV park to NYC... Pick one of the larger end row sites to get a little extra elbow room." Karen S. notes, "Basicly a parking lot, but the location can't be beat. 2 ferries that run to Manhattan. Path train is a 12 minute walk away."

Peaceful wooded sites: Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South offers tranquil forested camping. "Simple Campground - nice lay out albeit as with many campgrounds, the spaces are quite close together. With a sparse population in the winter, it made for a great spot," reports JL. Another camper described it as "Well kept, wooded sites on a mountain."

Clean facilities: Mountain Top RV Park maintains well-kept amenities. "The newly upgraded camp infrastructure elevated the stay, providing amenities for comfort and entertainment. The investment in new 50amp wiring, upgraded sewer systems, and newer water lines provided convenient camping experience," according to Jason G. from Mountain Top RV Park.

What you should know

Seasonal operation limits: Most RV parks near Morris Plains close during winter months. Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South operates from "May 1 to October 31" according to their listing information, while Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort runs from "Apr 1 - Oct 31."

Cell service variability: Coverage depends on specific campground location and carrier. At Timothy Lake South, "Cell service is ok. Verizon is 25 down 10 up. Tmobile is unusable," reports Don C.

Winter camping options: Limited RV parks remain open year-round. Tri-State RV Park offers winter camping according to BENdejo ~, who notes it's "Open during the winter. Easy on, easy off. Lots of pull through sites... CLEAN bathrooms, showers, laundry. Super nice owners. Perfect for an overnight stop."

Reservation requirements: Booking ahead is essential during peak seasons. "We had to come to the area kind of last minute, and they were very accommodating!" shares @HomegrownRV about Mountain Top RV Park, though this experience may not be typical during busy periods.

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Some campgrounds offer better play areas than others. At Pleasant Acres, "There is a small playground, a mini golf, and a large dog walk," though Bill B. notes that amenities are located at the top of the hill while "camping spots are downhill, a good distance from the office and amenities."

Kid-friendly activities: Look for campgrounds with scheduled events. At NWS Earle RV Park, Jeffrey notes it's "only an hour from Manhattan & 20 more minutes from the shore. If you're planning a visit to either this campground is cheap, clean & quiet."

Budget considerations: Campground prices vary significantly across the region. Jeffrey at NWS Earle RV Park mentions it's "cheap, clean & quiet" while Ericka T. reports Liberty Harbor charges "the $120 price per night" which she found "ridiculous. But being that they have no competitors in the area (and they know it), RVers wanting a quick escape to see NYC can get it here."

Tips from RVers

Navigation challenges: Some RV parks have difficult access routes. At Tri-State RV Park, Michael H. notes it's "Located just off the highway so lots of vehicle noise 24/7. Sites are on a gravel lot." BENdejo ~ provides specific directions: "Ext 53. Straight at the light. Drive all the way down to the end of the road."

Site selection strategy: Choosing the right spot improves your experience. At Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, Christina L. advises, "I suggest site 7. It is on a hill so have a hand truck or a few people to carry stuff. Trust me it is worth it and I think it's the best tent site they have."

Water connection solutions: Some parks have innovative solutions for shared hookups. At Mahlon Dickerson, "Website lists water hook ups at long distances but they have hose reels to help with that. Our site (15) said 75' however the 50' hose reel made it to our rv connection," reports antruze.

Dump station access: Plan for convenient waste disposal. Mahlon Dickerson offers "a dump station has a flush hose point. Nice and easy little campground," according to antruze, making it a practical option for RV parks near Morris Plains, New Jersey.
