Custer Gallatin National Forest spans over 3.1 million acres across south-central Montana with elevations ranging from 4,200 to 12,800 feet. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F during the day, dropping to 40-50°F at night, while spring and fall can bring unexpected snow at higher elevations. Cell service throughout the region varies significantly with many campsites experiencing complete signal loss outside main corridors and towns.
What to do
Fishing access: 15 miles north of Yellowstone at Yellowstone Edge RV Park, where the Yellowstone River provides prime fishing opportunities. "Right on the edge of the Yellowstone River, about 90 minutes north of Yellowstone NP. The view of the river and the mountains is fantastic," notes Joel R.
Hot springs relaxation: Bozeman Hot Springs offers multiple pools of varying temperatures perfect after hiking days. "The pools at different temperatures are heavenly and refreshing. Family oriented, clean sites and cabins sit along a running creek," reports Tracy T.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds report regular wildlife sightings, especially early morning and evening hours. "Elk roam the campground and that's super cool! The view of the mountains is breathtaking," explains Donna H. about Sun Outdoors Yellowstone North.
Mountain biking: Several trails accommodate mountain bikes near Ennis. "Great RV park with nice bathrooms and sites spaced nicely apart. Very friendly people. Lots to do nearby," notes Kathy S. from Ennis RV Village.
What campers like
River proximity: Many campers value sites directly adjacent to water. "We parked on one of the river sites, and the river was about 15 feet from our back door, absolutely beautiful!" shares Dawn R. about her stay at Yellowstone Edge RV Park.
Mountain views: The landscape provides scenic vistas from most campgrounds. "Overlooks a bluff with gorgeous view. Nice level gravel parking pads with a grass rectangle beside each spot," explains Lucile F. about Ennis RV Village.
Off-peak season travel: Visiting outside July-August often means fewer crowds and easier site availability. "Madison River Campground is usually busy Friday through Sunday but weekdays it's awesome," advises Jen R.
Location convenience: Many campers appreciate the strategic positioning of campgrounds. "Excellent tent and RV park just passed the north entrance to YSNP. Very helpful staff and very clean restrooms/showers," says Tyler S. about Yellowstone RV Park.
What you should know
Site spacing varies dramatically: Some campgrounds offer spacious sites while others position RVs quite close together. "The campground is very close to the entrance of Yellowstone. It looks like the owners do a good job of maintaining the facility. Some of the camp spots are a little tight," reports Adam G. about Sun Outdoors Yellowstone North.
Reservation windows: Most RV sites near Custer Gallatin National Forest open reservations 6-12 months in advance and fill quickly for summer. "We were lucky to snag a site at the last minute and felt very fortunate," notes Ann F.
Tent camping limitations: Many RV parks have limited or no tent camping options. "This is the only campground in West Yellowstone that accepts tents. There's another 5km north of town that accepts tents, but this is the only one in town," explains Robert T. about Fox Den RV and Campground.
Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds operate from May through early October, with facilities typically closing by mid-October due to weather. "The season runs May 1 to October 31," notes multiple reviewers.
Tips for camping with families
Playgrounds and activity areas: Some campgrounds offer dedicated recreation spaces. "This is a great park in an area where there is so much to do and see! They have a huge playground area for the kids," mentions Kloee S. at Red Rock RV Park.
Safety considerations: Bear activity requires proper food storage in all areas. "Haven't had a bear sighting in the camp in over 2 years," reports Kenneth H. about Valley View RV Park, but caution remains essential.
Laundry facilities: Extended stays with children benefit from on-site laundry. "The laundry mat is in the main building with plenty of units," notes Nancy C.
Evening wildlife viewing: Many campgrounds report elk and deer sightings at dusk. "Elk all around in the evenings," reports Krissy C., making wildlife observation a family-friendly activity.
Tips from RVers
Hookup quality: Water pressure varies between campgrounds, affecting shower and cleaning capabilities. "Great RV Park. Utilities work well. Spaces are close but better than many other private campgrounds around Yellowstone," shares Chip K.
Site leveling needs: Some campgrounds require significant leveling adjustments. "Sites were not leveled. There were Elk droppings in our site. Part of the rustic experience since Elk were everywhere," explains Cal about Yellowstone RV Park.
Size accommodation: Larger RVs should verify site dimensions before booking. "Plenty of room for big rigs. Staff is very friendly and helpful," notes Phillip R.
Winter preparation: Early fall temperatures can drop unexpectedly. "Temps turned for the worst yesterday and it is only Sept. 19. Did not come prepared with heated water hose so hopefully we are good," advises Stephanie A., suggesting RVers bring cold-weather gear even in September.
