What to do
Fishing at Cross Creek RV Park: This 70-acre property includes an 8-acre stocked lake with boat rentals. "We tent camped on the island for 2 nights. It was awesome, you can fish right off the bank of your own private island within minutes of waking up," reports Barrett C. from Cross Creek RV Park.
Hiking trails: Lake of the Ozarks State Park Campground offers multiple trail options through wooded terrain. "Our site was kinda tricky to get into, especially if you have a longer trailer. Seemed like quite a few were that way, so do your research. But campsite was average. Went in the fall and our camper was parked under a walnut tree, so that was kind of humorous when we started hearing the walnuts fall. Great hikes, beautiful scenery," writes Jenny H.
Water activities: The massive lake provides opportunities for boating, swimming, and water sports. "I was just there during spring break. I was the only tent camper. Maybe 8 RVs or so out of nearly 150 campsites. It was nice and quiet. Beautiful scenery—able to camp with a view of the lake," reports David W. from Lake of the Ozarks State Park Campground.
What campers like
Wildlife viewing: The area supports abundant wildlife, particularly in the state park. "Huge beautiful park. A lot of hiking and biking trails. Boat ramp and store in the park. We saw about 20 deer each day," notes Anthony C.
Off-season tranquility: Many campgrounds are significantly less crowded during spring and fall. "The campground was quiet and it is located in a secluded State Park," states Danielle B. who enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere at Lake of the Ozarks State Park.
Military recreation areas: Special facilities are available for military personnel. "Beautiful campground, though Full hookup sites are on an unappealing parking lot. Sites with electric and water only are in nice oak woods overlooking Lake of the Ozarks. (Our site # J has a concrete stairway with 150 steps down to the water.) Tent sites are right on the water, with spectacular views," mentions Kate B. from Military Park Fort Leonard Wood Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area.
What you should know
Road conditions: Some campgrounds have difficult access routes. "The road to get in and out of this place is absolutely ridiculous. You can try to go 1mph to avoid potholes or washed out area just to hit the next pothole and washed out area," cautions Sean from Cross Creek RV Park.
Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds in the region sit on hilly terrain. "Nnothing but great things to say about our stay at the state park. We went after the busy season ended (July 4). We took a kayak tour and saw great wildlife and beautiful scenery. Campsite was clean and we stayed in a section where most site were pull through. The only negative was the uneven surface but not a show stopper by any means," reports Jeremiah K.
Wildlife awareness: Proper food storage is essential. "Raccoons can become a problem if food, lotions or anything with a scent if left out," warns Debbie H., who visited Osage Beach RV Park near Brumley, Missouri.
Tips for camping with families
Playgrounds and activities: Some campgrounds offer extensive recreation options. "Kids love the mini golf, shuffleboard, and basketball. Huge private lake great for fishing and watching duck families swim by and come up to you on the grass!" recommends Keidra P. from Cross Creek RV Park.
Dog-friendly options: Pet friendly camping near Brumley, Missouri includes various accommodations. "We stayed overnight here because our dog was sick and this was close to the animal hospital we visited. We wish would have stayed here originally (we stayed the first night at the state park). While the State Park was nice this campground offered so much more and was closer to town so we could walk to restaurants," notes Tom B. about his experience at Osage Beach RV Park.
Holiday events: Several campgrounds host special activities. "They have an awesome Halloween Spooktacular!!!!" mentions Felicia H. about Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing considerations: Campgrounds vary significantly in site spacing. "Very nice RV park near grocery store and food. Also near the Lake Of the Ozarks State Park. This RV park has everything you'd need. There is a nice pool, games, laundry, playground, propane, supplies and food, full hook ups, cable, restrooms and showers. The reason I took a star off was that the sites were closer together than I like," shares Shannon G. about her stay at Osage Beach RV Park.
Connectivity options: Remote work campers should research internet availability. "This was a very nice, clean campground in the city of Osage Beach. We needed a campsite to be able to work and school remotely from and this fit the bill with excellent WiFi that had boosters all throughout the campground," reports Melissa H.
Site access for larger rigs: Consider approach angles and site dimensions. "The campground is set up for all varieties of camping. My 35 ft. Fifth wheel is about max length to make the campground roads. Otherwise, All pads are level asphalt so minimal pad shimming necessary," advises Tadd B. from Majestic Oaks RV Park & Campground.
