Best RV Parks & Resorts near Saint Croix National Scenic River

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several RV parks with full hookups operate near Saint Croix National Scenic River. Grand Casino RV Resort in Hinckley offers 271 sites with electric, water, and sewer connections, open year-round with 50-amp service. Wildwood RV Park & Campground in Shafer features 135 sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp options, operating from May to October. Country Quiet RV Park and Campground in Cumberland provides spacious big rig spots with 50-amp hookups on fairly spread-out sites. Most parks offer back-in sites, though some provide pull-through options for larger motorhomes. "The sites are very close together with little to no privacy, but it did a fine job as we were there for the concert. All the sites are back in only, and are a tight squeeze for bigger rigs."

Many RV campgrounds in this region maintain shower houses, dump stations, and on-site convenience stores. Between May and October, nearly all facilities remain open, while winter options become limited to a select few year-round parks. Some RV parks provide shuttle service to nearby attractions like casinos, though personal transportation is recommended for accessing river access points. Pet policies vary by location, with most allowing pets on leash within designated areas. A review mentioned that "back-in site was 90 degrees to the road - if the bathhouse parking lot wasn't across from it, wouldn't have been able to swing in on a 24' travel trailer." Cell service generally remains reliable throughout the region, with better coverage near larger towns. Reservation requirements increase during summer weekends and fall foliage season.

    Ham Lake Resort

Well Rounded RV Park and Campground

My partner and I scheduled a 3 day / 2 night stay in a new Vintage Cruiser RV for $39.99, in exchange for attending a presentation on private membership.

We checked in Wednesday evening, and the nicest staff I've ever met helped us acclimate to RV living. We are new to this game. They patiently described how to utilize the grey and black water tanks, as well as encouraged us to check-out the canoes, row boats, bikes, horseshoes, ladder golf and many other entertainment items - for FREE!

The map provided was accurate which made locating the cruiser a breeze. There were further instructions inside as well. The RV was immaculate. Provided for our use were all linens (a public very clean bath and shower was just across the road), dish soap, dish towels, paper towels, flat wear, plates, bowls, mugs and pans.

The campground has a couple of ponds, as well as access to Ham Lake where the watercraft is launched. There is a petting arena with goats, ponies, and a llama who gave my partner the stink eye, but fell in love with me rubbing the fence and giving me all googly eyes!

The clubhouse sells bundled wood, ice, snacks, cold drinks, ice cream and provides 24-hour fresh coffee. There is also a small resupply area, and gift shop.

There are pull-through sites, back ups, 50 and 30 amp hook ups, and tent sites, covered pavilions, picnic tables and fire pits.

The campground itself seems remote, secluded and peaceful, however, you are conveniently located to two well-stocked convenience stores, as well as Wal-Mart about 15 minutes away. It's also only about 45 minutes from the Minnesota Twin Cities.

One note: We visited in August and needed gallons of bug spray.

We very much enjoyed our get away!

    Grand Casino RV Resort

Park’s designers hav never been in an RV

The designers of this park have clearly never spent a night in an RV. This place pushes all of my buttons for things not to do when building an RV park.

Virtually every site in the park is a blind back in from the driver seat. You’re trying to back your trailer into a site on the right side without being able to see anything over there. Additionally, the site number pedestals for each site are right against the corner of the driveway where you have to back around them without being able to see them. Number pedestals for all sites are also right against the road, limiting the amount that you can swing your tow vehicle to the opposite side of the road to back into the site.  I will guarantee that not one person on the design team has ever backed, a travel trailer or fifth wheel into an RV site. The owners should have checked the credentials of the designers they hired. If they did, they were lied to. If they didn’t, then they just didn’t care about their customers.

Finally, one of my all-time favorites, all of the sewer connections are cut off about 12 inches above the ground. This means that even in a relatively tall fifth wheel, you are going to be trying to make shit filled water flow uphill. These things need to be cut off just an inch or two above the ground level  so that your sewage can flow downhill.

If you were here to spend an evening gambling at the casino, the place is roomy and well maintained. If you just want to spend the night, and not spend half of it trying to get into your site and set up, there’s got to be someplace close that would be better to go. We won’t be back.

    Pathfinder Village-St Croix

    Tall Tall Trees

Lots of tall evergreen trees (not sure of the specific species) here that you are nestled in. Have to know a seasonal site holder to camp here. Sites can be a little tricky backing into because of the trees, but ultimately they have enough space even for large rigs(there were three of us there: 2 5th wheels and one longer travel trailer). A picnic table and fire ring was provided at each site. Nice easy road to navigate getting into the campground. Close to Hinckley if you're looking for things to do!

    Doolittle Park

    Excellent Campground for Families.

This campground, run by the Village of Birchwood, is family friendly with many amenities. There is a public beach, playground, picnic area, boat launch, fish cleaning house, and pavilion. There are also monthly($500.00+75.00 for electric} and seasonal sites available{$1800.00+ electric fee at the end of the year).

Fishing is very good on the Big Chetac Chain of Lakes approx.1700acres.

Reservations can be made through the Village of Birchwood by calling 715-354-3300.

    Banning State Park Campground

    Winter camping

This is a great place for winter camping! The campsites are large enough (despite the snow) to set up suitable winter tents, and each site has a picnic table and fire pit. In the park, there's a lot of ice climbing and cross country skiing. If you take a short walk from the main parking area towards the bathroom, and follow the trail alongside the bluff, you'll find awesome spots to climb and likely a lot of dedicated adventurers. Nearby the campsite you have a great water source, and a lot of peace and quiet at night despite being close to a residential area and town.

    Moose Lake City Park

    Will come again!

We stayed in site 27 and it was perfect for our truck, 40ft fifth wheel camper, and utv trailer. Its nice that the campground allows utv/atv access. If you are double pulling with a atv/utv trailer it is very challenging to use the dump station!!

Only downfall was all the goose poop and bugs, but thats to be expected on the lake. The weekend host and his wife were very nice people!

    Grand Casino RV Resort

    Rocking RockTember Music Festival

We booked our stay at the RV Resort so we wouldn't have to drive two and a half hours back and forth during the two day Grand RockTember Music Festival. *Please note when there's an event, book early!! This RV Resort has 271 RV/Camping full hook up sites that include a picnic table and fire pit. The sites are very close together with little to no privacy, but it did a fine job as we were there for the concert. Guest Services were super friendly when we checked in, and they give you a pass card to enter & exit the Resort. There is 24 hour security, and shuttle bus service to the casino, although we enjoyed the 1/2 mile walk to the amphitheater. All the sites are back in only, and are a tight squeeze for bigger rigs. They enforced the quite hours well, and we got a good nights sleep. There's a heated outdoor pool, and small convince store in the guest services building. They have a pet walking area, and kennels if you want to spend time at the casino. The bathhouse offered private toilet stalls and showers, and we squeaky clean!!! If you like to golf, don't miss the 18 hole Grand National Golf Course next door. We enjoyed our stay, and will be back again.

    Wild River State Park Campground

    Lots to Explore/Learn

I’ll say, one of the best parts of this park is all the interpretative kiosks. Love learning about the forestry and history of state parks!  Also many options for trails which is great. A lot of wildlife here, I heard a ton of coyotes and geese, a woodpecker, and a beaver under the bridge in the evening chomping away at peeling logs... totally scared me at first but he was just doing his job and I tried not to bother him!

I stayed at the backpacking site: SPRING. It’s just a short hike (bout 400 meters)  from the river access where there is a vaulted toilet snd water year-round. The site had a bench overlooking the river and a rugged stair for water access. Also had a little personal rustic toilet just a trail behind the site. Nice and wooded campsite, soft dirt, and fairly spacious! In wet months, I bet it's pretty muddy. The only drawback is that the trail it’s situated on is the hiking club trail and heavily trafficked. I stayed in winter, where you could see through the trees and all that tho. Maybe in summer, it’s more secluded? But still, something to keep in mind.

Took a peek at the campground- some of the most spaced out and wooded sites I’ve seen yet. I like that they made it in separated loops, to avoid through traffic distracting your stay. Love the visitors center, great overlook, and interesting information. By the trail center, which is also very cozy and rents, skis and snowshoes and has a great inside fireplace, there is an interpretative walk about white pines- great for kids to imagine those huge trees! They do a great job aiding the imagination as you walk along the short trail.

Camper cabins here are up on a bluff- didn’t stay there but totes want to! Nicely situated.

Everything that I checked out here was very well managed and they clearly put a lot of time and care into making this park functional, interesting, and accessible. I loved my little backpack site but can’t wait to come back to camp in the summer or rent a cabin! The river is gorgeous, even as it was frozen in winter!

What campers like

Dog-friendly amenities: Pet owners particularly appreciate the thoughtful dog facilities at several parks. "We absolutely loved the dog park. It was not just some small dog area it was top of the line dog park," shares a camper about Country Quiet RV Park and Campground. Banning RV Park features "a huge dog walking and play area that was grassy and beautifully clean—and, of special interest, included a complete 'dog playground' with all the standards elements of a dog agility course!"

Pool and splash pad options: Several campgrounds offer water recreation beyond the river. Wildwood RV Park & Campground provides "clean and nice" pool facilities, while Country Camping RV Park features "swimming pool with splash pad" that "even nice for adults."

Site spacing and layout: Campers frequently comment on the generous spacing between sites at certain parks. "Our site was a fairly level pull through, full hook up site," notes one visitor to Banning RV Park. Country Quiet RV Park offers "fairly spread out" sites with "easy loop system makes this campground very easy to navigate through."

What you should know

Varying water hookup setups: Some campgrounds have unique water connection arrangements. At Banning RV Park, water hookups are "shared with other sites and required 'y' connections at the spigots." One camper reported their "source ended up being 75' plus from our RV. Thankfully I just happened to be carrying the extra hose for several years but never had to use it before."

Highway noise considerations: While most campgrounds offer peaceful settings, proximity to major roadways can impact some locations. Banning RV Park "is not far from nearby Highway 35, so there is a fair amount of road noise despite a barrier of pines planted as a buffer."

Site navigation challenges: Grand Casino RV Resort presents some specific layout challenges for larger rigs. "The designers of this park have clearly never spent a night in an RV. Virtually every site in the park is a blind back in from the driver seat. You're trying to back your trailer into a site on the right side without being able to see anything over there."

Tips for camping with families

Activity variety: Campgrounds offer various family-friendly amenities. "Fun Fun Fun... Great variety of things to do for everyone. Group sites, tent sites, covered wagon sites! Floating on the Rum River, swimming pool with splash pad, little camp store, Golf cart rentals! Our grandkids love it too!" reports a visitor to Country Camping RV Park.

Adventure options: Boulder Woods RV Park offers a "mature trees and park like setting" with "power and water at all sites" in a well-maintained environment. While it has a view of Ann Lake, the park "does not have access to the lake" directly, so plan water activities accordingly.

Biking access: Families appreciate campgrounds with trail access. Wildwood RV Park visitors mention "The kids tried the bike trail that they could access right from the campground." The location offers "having so much to do on and off-site" with staff described as "very nice" in a "family-oriented park."

Tips from RVers

Parking strategies: RV sites often require specific parking approaches. Wildwood RV Park offers both "RV sites" and "tent sites" for groups camping together. Grand Casino RV Resort presents challenges as "the site number pedestals for each site are right against the corner of the driveway where you have to back around them without being able to see them."

Sewer connection design: Some RV parks have sewer connection designs that create challenges. At Grand Casino RV Resort, "all of the sewer connections are cut off about 12 inches above the ground. This means that even in a relatively tall fifth wheel, you are going to be trying to make shit filled water flow uphill."

Leveling considerations: Site conditions can impact RV leveling. Banning RV Park sites were described as "grass that was a little long and rutted from what seemed from previous tenants. This made getting leveling a little difficult and out fold out stairs touched the ground before fully being deployed."
