Best Campgrounds near Montgomery, MN

The Montgomery, Minnesota area includes several established campgrounds with a range of accommodation options from tent sites to full-hookup RV spots and rental cabins. Sakatah Lake State Park Campground offers both tent and RV camping with electric hookups and access to hiking trails along Sakatah Lake, while Kamp Dels provides family-oriented camping with extensive recreational amenities including a swimming pool and petting zoo. Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, typically from April through October, with varying levels of amenities from primitive tent sites to facilities with full water, sewer, and electrical connections.

Camping in the Montgomery area experiences significant seasonal variability with most facilities closed during winter months. "Sites were long enough for our 40ft fifth wheel camper plus the truck and we had a large yard. Sites have crushed asphalt base and are decently level," noted one visitor to Rice County McCullough Park. Many campgrounds require reservations, especially during summer weekends and holidays. The terrain is generally level with good road access, making most sites accessible for vehicles of all sizes, though some backcountry areas may have more limited access. Mosquitoes and other insects can be prevalent during summer months, particularly near water features, so campers should come prepared with appropriate repellents and screening.

Several visitors highlight water access as a key feature of camping in the region. Lakes and ponds provide opportunities for fishing, boating, and shoreline relaxation at campgrounds like Rice County McCullough Park, which features boat docks and lake access. Family-friendly amenities are another common theme in reviews, with Kamp Dels receiving particular mention for its extensive recreational facilities. A camper described the experience: "This is such a great campground for families! So many activities including a water recreation area, petting zoo, shuffleboard, mini golf, pool, toddler water park, multiple playgrounds, basketball and more." Sites tend to vary in privacy levels, with state park campgrounds generally offering more seclusion than private campgrounds, where sites may be closer together to accommodate more visitors.

    Crystal Springs RV Resort

Has a resort feel to it

Spent one night passing through Ellendale Minnesota. Our reservation paperwork was waiting for us at the gatehouse with directions to our back-in site 11. A close walk to the laundry, showers and restroom pavilion was terrific. I can’t remember but I believe this was the best campground for low road noise of our entire trip!

    Zumbrota Covered Bridge Park

    Scenic

Pros: great paved walking and bike trail; leads to state bike trail; MN only covered bridge; huge park playground; disc golf course; along branch of the river; easy walk into town; friendly camp host; very quiet Cons: few site pads, you just drive onto grass where you see electric/water posts and fire ring; restroom with 1 toilet and 1 shower were dirty (husband said it looks like it hadn’t been cleaned in a month) I concur on woman’s as well but there was toilet paper (happy) but no hand soap or paper towels; garbage in women’s shower

    Lake Byllesby Regional Park

    Great park

Lakeside sites are close together, with W/E hookups, but they’re right in the lake with a wonderful view. The facilities are very clean and well-kept. Cannon Falls is a nice town to explore, and it’s close to home and work. Cell service was good also.

    Land of Memories Campground

Camp manager rude with no cause

I was campground shopping here, driving to see rates and what it looked like, stopped for my wife to use the port-a-potty and the camp manager drives up rude as can be and starts scolding me for parking in a parking space while I wait for my wife. No need for the attitude or the campsite now.

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park Campground

    Typical State Park

This park has a nice, small campground. The sites have quite a few trees separating them, but most of the sites on the C loop back up almost into the sites on the right side of the B loop. (so we basically had the back our neighbor’s trailer hanging almost into our site. Also, there’s some sites that are tricky to back a trailer into, which would have been helped by some maintenance - there were LOTS of branches that needed to be trimmed back. On the flip side, the bathroom/shower building was new and clean, the camp host was friendly and helpful, and the hike to the hidden falls did not disappoint. It’s so close to the Twin Cities that it’s very convenient for a weekend, or maybe a commute-to-work midweek getaway. And, through no fault of the park, cell service (both AT&T and TMobile) was terrible. There’s WiFi at the office, which is just a short hike from the campground.
