    Fish Lake Acres Campground

    Quiet, Lake Views

This campground is great especially when compared with state park camping. Full hookups available, quite a few pull through lots and close to the twin cities! No wifi, so make sure you've got decent cell service and hotspot if you need internet/wifi. Verizon gets ok coverage here, T-Mobile does too. Showers/bathhouses are clean and the hot water runs forever and not coin operated or push button like some others I've been to! Bonus! Good toilet paper in the bathrooms not the cheap stuff. The lake is literally out your door and they do have a small swimming beach and boat launch. MN Horse and Hunt club is about a mile or so up a trail access that is Almosy directly across from the camp entrance. There is an ATM there along with a bar and restaurant. Be prepared to hear gunshots regularly but it's not really bothersome unless you aren't prepared for it. The trail to the club is safe to walk though. The campground ONLY accepts cash so be sure to hit the ATM before you get here. They also charge $2 extra per dog if you have them. Nightly rate for the full hookup site I had was $32 with the dog. They charge .50 c per log for firewood. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The staff are really nice and laid back. It's a really nice little campground!

    Ham Lake Resort

Well Rounded RV Park and Campground

My partner and I scheduled a 3 day / 2 night stay in a new Vintage Cruiser RV for $39.99, in exchange for attending a presentation on private membership.

We checked in Wednesday evening, and the nicest staff I've ever met helped us acclimate to RV living. We are new to this game. They patiently described how to utilize the grey and black water tanks, as well as encouraged us to check-out the canoes, row boats, bikes, horseshoes, ladder golf and many other entertainment items - for FREE!

The map provided was accurate which made locating the cruiser a breeze. There were further instructions inside as well. The RV was immaculate. Provided for our use were all linens (a public very clean bath and shower was just across the road), dish soap, dish towels, paper towels, flat wear, plates, bowls, mugs and pans.

The campground has a couple of ponds, as well as access to Ham Lake where the watercraft is launched. There is a petting arena with goats, ponies, and a llama who gave my partner the stink eye, but fell in love with me rubbing the fence and giving me all googly eyes!

The clubhouse sells bundled wood, ice, snacks, cold drinks, ice cream and provides 24-hour fresh coffee. There is also a small resupply area, and gift shop.

There are pull-through sites, back ups, 50 and 30 amp hook ups, and tent sites, covered pavilions, picnic tables and fire pits.

The campground itself seems remote, secluded and peaceful, however, you are conveniently located to two well-stocked convenience stores, as well as Wal-Mart about 15 minutes away. It's also only about 45 minutes from the Minnesota Twin Cities.

One note: We visited in August and needed gallons of bug spray.

We very much enjoyed our get away!

    Ann Lake

    Rustic & Family Friendly

This is a great little rustic campground within an hour's drive of the Twin Cities! It has several potable water sources throughout the campground, but no running water for toilets or showers. There are several vault toilets. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring. You can buy firewood & ice at the Sand Dunes Stop gas station, just a 10 minutes drive away.

This is a first-come, first-served campground, so no reservations required. This does mean that there is a chance you won't be able to get a site, but I've only had that happen one time when I got there at 6pm on a Saturday. There are usually sites available.

I love going to this campground - it's family friendly, and there is a swimming beach a quick 3 minute drive away! The hiking trails aren't half bad, either! I love coming here to relax for a weekend, spend some time at the beach, and just enjoy nature. If you go in the early to mid summer, you'll also hear local whip-poor-wills serenade you to sleep.

Overall, 4 stars. The only downsides are no running water and no ice & firewood at the campground itself.

    Lebanon Hills Regional Park

    Friendly staff & quiet

Great location for easy access to mountain bike trails. Friendly staff. Clean facilities. Nice trail within the campground. Some sites are more shaded than others in the east loop so look at photos if you want shade. Sites that back up to the green space are very sunny. 87 is a great site! Plenty of space for a trailer or tent with a private “nook” for the fire pit.

    Lake Elmo County Park Reserve

    Great for the kiddos

For a County Park, Lake Elmo has an impressive list of amenities. Before we even get to the campsite let's mention the filtered swimming pond. This man made pond is a sandy bottom and surrounded by a nice sand beach. Large built in umbrellas are available for sun coverage and there is a concession stand and bathrooms with showers. And yes, as I mentioned the water is filtered! No gross goose poop or green algae to deal with! Next to the swim pond is a giant playground with fun for the big and little kids. Other amenities include archery, horse trails, paved and grass trails, camper spots, rustic spots and hike in camping spots. In winter the xc ski trails are lit for evening skiing. Or let's be honest early afternoon. It is Minnesota and the suns down by 4 In the Winter! They also have a newer Nordic center that's open all year round and includes a locker room with showers. The hike in camp spot we chose was on a small lake so it had a nice breeze and made it easy to bring a kayak or paddleboard and hop right in. There is also a boat launch for your larger toys! The trails in the park are quite impressive for its size. We enjoyed a 5 mile loop off the Nordic center and right past the camp spot. A picnic table and fire pit as well as nice flat tent pad were provided. If you're coming in from out of town then you're just a 5 minute drive from Woodbury and all the amenities you'd ever need but the park feels miles away from it all.

    Tresure Island RV Park

    It’s a parking lot…

We are here for a show at the casino and thought it would be fun to bring the camper down and glamp for the weekend. It is just a parking lot but the sites are all pull through and there is plenty of room between sites and ours was perfectly level.

We have dogs so the fact that it’s all asphalt and rock is a bit of a bummer but we are close to the exercise area and they do love little walks. It also seems to be controlling some of the normal bad pet parent behavior we see at even parks. Like letting the dogs run with out leashes or tethering them all day to bark at everything.

The sites do not have fire rings but there are some community ones and it appears the other campers brought their own smokeless fire pits to use.

There is a shuttle to the casino and at 7pm folks seemed to clear out to head over. It was honestly one of the quietest campgrounds we’ve been to on a Friday night.

The bath house is newer and super clean- not a single creepy spider web in any corners.

On Verizon I have full bars so we haven’t tried the park WiFi but we’ve been able to use our chrome cast and two iPads off my cell phone with zero issues. Because it’s in a river valley the air tv single is terrible so we are glad to have the chrome cast with us- since the forecast called for a raining day.

Guide to Columbus

Camping near Columbus, Minnesota offers year-round outdoor recreation with seasonal accommodations throughout the region. Most campgrounds in the area experience peak occupancy from May through early October, when temperatures average 70-85°F during summer days. The region features several bodies of water including the Rum River and various lakes that provide water-based activities for campers at multiple recreational sites.

What to do

Tubing on the Rum River: At Country Camping Tent & RV Park on the Rum River, tubing is a popular summer activity. "We've stayed at Country Camping for years! Great variety of things to do for everyone. Group sites, tent sites, covered wagon sites! Floating on the Rum River, swimming pool with splash pad, little camp store, Golf cart rentals!" A shuttle bus takes tubers into town, allowing them to float back to the campground.

Explore nearby quarries: The Clearwater area offers unique outdoor experiences within short driving distance. "We stayed here to visit the nearby quarry park and that was a blast!" reports a camper who stayed at St. Cloud-Clearwater RV Park with their pop-up camper. Quarry parks typically feature swimming holes in former mining sites surrounded by hiking trails.

Mini golf and recreational amenities: Many campgrounds offer on-site activities beyond water recreation. "This a nice family campground. It has a 9 hole mini golf, shuffleboard, salt water pool, and a lobby/gift shop. They also offer a nice seating area for those hot or raining days with free arcade," notes a visitor to St. Cloud-Clearwater RV Park.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many rv campgrounds in Columbus, Minnesota and surrounding areas offer generously sized sites. "Large sites. Great tubing and canoeing," according to a Country Camping review. Another camper at Wildwood RV Park & Campground mentioned, "We tent camped for two nights in site CC, which had a small quiet creek beside it. These primitive sites are down a small dirt road away from the main RV camping area and are nicely wooded."

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness consistently ranks high in visitor satisfaction. "Clean bathrooms with hot water, clean laundry room," reports a recent St. Cloud-Clearwater RV Park visitor. Another camper at Baker Campground - Baker Park Reserve stated, "The bathrooms and showers are nice and clean, some of the best I've seen at a campground!"

River access: The sandy-bottomed Rum River receives particular praise from campers. "Key thing is the river is very clean and sandy bottom," notes one visitor. Riverfront camping areas provide direct water access for swimming and paddling activities throughout the warmer months.

What you should know

Seasonal operation: Most campgrounds in the Columbus area operate from early May through early October. St. Cloud-Clearwater RV Park runs from May 3 to October 13, while Wildwood RV Park & Campground operates from May 5 to October 8. Weather conditions determine exact opening and closing dates, with some facilities extending seasons during mild years.

Cell service variability: Connectivity differs between campgrounds and carriers. "Verizon cell coverage is good here and OTA TV has a few channels," notes a Mississippi Riverwood RV Park visitor. Another camper at Wildwood mentioned, "Sadly I needed 4 hours of internet and my cellular data here was spotty. I spent this time right outside the office."

Site-specific amenities: Facilities vary significantly between campgrounds and even between site types within the same park. "The sites do not have fire rings but there are some community ones and it appears the other campers brought their own smokeless fire pits to use," notes one camper about shared amenities at certain locations.

Tips for camping with families

Look for splash pads and pools: Water features provide entertainment for children during hot summer days. "I stayed here 3 weeks ago with my wife and 2 young children and it was fantastic great playground and heated pool the spaces were well kept and spaced apart 10-10 would most definitely go again! A ton for the kids to do!" reports an enthusiastic Country Camping visitor.

Consider kid-friendly campground layouts: Some parks organize their facilities with families in mind. "This campground is great for everyone! It's has a heated pool, splash pad area, BIG playground area, indoor game room, HUGE sites!" notes a visitor to Country Camping RV Park. Playgrounds and recreation areas provide supervised activities for different age groups.

Check for group camping options: Family reunions and multi-family trips benefit from specialized sites. "We went with a ground of friends (all families with young kids). It was the perfect place to easily get in, set up, hangout, and just relax. The sites are fairly large, but very open," explains a Baker Park Reserve visitor describing their experience camping with multiple families.

Tips from RVers

Diverse site types available: RV campgrounds near Columbus, Minnesota accommodate various equipment sizes and preferences. "The campground is so nice and quiet! Located 50 Miles NW of Minneapolis, and only 15 Miles from St. Cloud, MN. Large wooded lots, most facing the river or wildlife pond. Full hook-ups, with 30 or 50 amp service. Concrete Patios on every lot," notes a visitor to RiversEdge RV Park.

Off-season considerations: Seasonal closures affect services at most campgrounds. "Boulder Woods is mostly seasonal camping but does have RV sites for overnight and weekly camping. The park is well maintained with power and water at all sites," reports a visitor to Boulder Woods RV Park, highlighting the availability of utilities even outside peak season.

Prepare for weather events: The Minnesota climate includes sudden storms during camping season. "We came outside to asses damages and instead of the park owner checking on us he belligerently screamed at my children," reported one camper describing the aftermath of "a TERRIBLE storm with nickel to quarter size hail." Weather preparedness should include adequate shelter and damage mitigation plans.
