Best Campgrounds near Belle Plaine, MN

The Minnesota River Valley surrounding Belle Plaine offers diverse camping experiences within a 30-mile radius. High Island Creek Park in nearby Henderson provides free tent and RV camping in a forested setting with basic amenities like picnic tables and vault toilets. More developed options include Minneapolis Southwest KOA in Jordan, operating seasonally from April to October with full hookups and cabin rentals. Dakotah Meadows RV Park in Prior Lake and Peaceful Valley Campground in Le Sueur both feature comprehensive facilities for RVers, including 50-amp service and sewer connections. County parks like Lebanon Hills Regional Park in Eagan and Baker Park Reserve in Medina balance natural settings with modern amenities, making them popular for weekend getaways.

Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally from late April through mid-October due to Minnesota's harsh winters. Reservations are essential during summer weekends and holiday periods, particularly at county parks with lake access. As one camper noted about High Island Creek Park: "I hiked in about 1/2 a mile and camped in the trees, but they also have clearings closer to the entrance with grills where you could easily set up." Spring camping may encounter muddy conditions after snowmelt, while summer brings occasional thunderstorms and moderate humidity. Mosquitoes can be abundant in wooded areas from June through August, especially near water sources.

Family-friendly amenities distinguish many campgrounds in the area. Lebanon Hills Regional Park receives consistent praise for its balance of accessibility and seclusion. According to one visitor: "Tent camp sites are far enough from each other that neighbors can't be seen, and we didn't hear them either." Baker Park Reserve offers excellent swimming beaches and playgrounds but less privacy between sites. Several reviewers mention train noise affecting campgrounds near railroad tracks, particularly at sites closest to the Minnesota River. Most developed campgrounds provide clean shower facilities and well-maintained restrooms. The proximity to Minneapolis-St. Paul (30-45 minutes) makes these campgrounds popular for weekend trips, with many campers using them as convenient base camps for exploring both urban attractions and natural areas.

    Lake Byllesby Regional Park

    Great park

Lakeside sites are close together, with W/E hookups, but they’re right in the lake with a wonderful view. The facilities are very clean and well-kept. Cannon Falls is a nice town to explore, and it’s close to home and work. Cell service was good also.

    Land of Memories Campground

Camp manager rude with no cause

I was campground shopping here, driving to see rates and what it looked like, stopped for my wife to use the port-a-potty and the camp manager drives up rude as can be and starts scolding me for parking in a parking space while I wait for my wife. No need for the attitude or the campsite now.

    Mississippi Riverwood RV Park

A hidden gem - PRIVATE RV Park

This hidden gem is a PRIVATE RV Park where each lot is individually owned and most owners live South in the winter. Individual owners can rent their lot with restrictions and those rentals are between the owner and the renter. The owners association is not involved in these rentals or the disputes that sometimes arise.  That said, we own a riverside lot and absolutely love it here.

    Bunker Hills Regional Park

    Quick stop in MN

Stayed here for an overnight stop through MN. Close to downtown which was nice for us coming through. Water fill stations readily available so we loaded up prior to continuing out west. Easy late check in with campsite hosts. Lots of site options from open gield options to pretty tree covered areas. Fire grates and restrooms ava. Your reservation fee does NOT include the daily parks fee of 7 dollars just FYI. Lots of mosquitoes but it's MN so that's to be expected. Close to a top 10 disc golf course if that's your thing (it's ours)

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park Campground

    Typical State Park

This park has a nice, small campground. The sites have quite a few trees separating them, but most of the sites on the C loop back up almost into the sites on the right side of the B loop. (so we basically had the back our neighbor’s trailer hanging almost into our site. Also, there’s some sites that are tricky to back a trailer into, which would have been helped by some maintenance - there were LOTS of branches that needed to be trimmed back. On the flip side, the bathroom/shower building was new and clean, the camp host was friendly and helpful, and the hike to the hidden falls did not disappoint. It’s so close to the Twin Cities that it’s very convenient for a weekend, or maybe a commute-to-work midweek getaway. And, through no fault of the park, cell service (both AT&T and TMobile) was terrible. There’s WiFi at the office, which is just a short hike from the campground.

Guide to Belle Plaine

Belle Plaine camping options range from basic tent sites to full-service RV parks within a 30-minute drive. The area sits within the transition zone between prairie and deciduous forest, with elevations ranging from 720 to 820 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-85°F with night lows in the 60s, while spring and fall camping requires preparation for temperature swings of 30+ degrees between day and night.

What to do

Kayaking on Lake Auburn: Lake Auburn Campground offers excellent paddling opportunities on its small, motor-restricted lake. "I bought new camping gear and this campground, given its proximity to our house, made for an easy weekend getaway to give the gear a trial run. The beach area looks nice but we didn't use it," notes a recent visitor to Lake Auburn Campground.

Trail exploration: The ravines and creeks at High Island Creek Park provide secluded hiking. "Good vibes it's a magical place when u go hiking down the hill to the hidden creeks trails and absolute peace being one with nature," shares one camper about their experience at High Island Creek Park.

Golf and lake activities: Cleary Lake Regional Park combines camping with recreational facilities. "The golfing nearby seemed reasonably priced for those interested," mentions a camper who appreciated the diverse activities available.

What campers like

Secluded tent sites: Lebanon Hills Regional Park offers privacy not commonly found so close to a metropolitan area. "Tent camp sites are far enough from each other that neighbors can't be seen, and we didn't hear them either," notes a visitor to Lebanon Hills Regional Park.

Proximity to small towns: The rural character and access to nearby communities enhances the camping experience. "Gulley that a large creek runs through surrounded by trees and large forested hills. The entire park is surrounded by farms, nearby are some really nice Minnesota small towns like Henderson and the somewhat larger St. Peter (but still small town)," explains a camper from High Island Creek Park.

Clean facilities: Campground maintenance stands out at many locations near Belle Plaine. "Bathrooms are clean. Campground management is helpful and friendly, and even has little fire starting bundles if you're having a rough time getting that fire going," reports a camper from Lake Auburn Campground.

What you should know

No-reservation options: Some campgrounds near Belle Plaine operate on a first-come basis. "We lucked out and were able to stay 2 nights without reservations... If after hours and there are no spots, you can dry dock in large lot in front of office," explains a visitor to Dakotah Meadows RV Park.

Limited water access: Several campgrounds restrict water availability during shoulder seasons. "The water wasn't turned on yet, but we were able to fill our fresh water tank with a hose from their laundromat," notes one camper about early season conditions.

Insect preparation: Mosquitoes can be problematic, particularly at creek-side sites. "I stayed four nights. I would have stayed longer but ran out of water. There isn't any potable water on site. During a hot day, I took my two dogs and we hiked to a nearby river. We cooled off and enjoyed the peace and quite. The only downside is no potable water and lots of mesquites."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Baker Park Reserve offers family-friendly amenities with convenient access. "The sites are good sized, and the bathroom/showers are great. With great fishing, playground, swimming, and biking trails very nearby, the kids were kept as busy as they wanted to be," shares one visitor to Baker Campground.

Educational opportunities: Many parks offer structured activities for children. "The playground is good for kids and they have programs every Saturday night, some of the ones we've been to were about bugs, raptors, bees, and snakes, there are usually programs during the day at the nature center as well."

Beach selection: Swimming areas vary significantly in quality and depth. "The lake is nice, smaller with not many motor boats so good for kayaking or canoeing, the beach is pretty clean, some weeds floating in the water and very shallow for kids."

Tips from RVers

Concrete pads: Dakotah Meadows offers premium surfaces for leveling. "This campground is a gem so very close to the Twin Cities. The sites are paved and have well-maintained grass. We were located near the casino road, which has an occasional loud car, even at night."

Late-season options: Finding open campgrounds after early October can be challenging. "One of the few camps open in MN past Oct 1st. Owners and host were very friendly and accommodating. They visited each camper to say hey and small talk," explains a camper at Peaceful Valley Campground.

Site selection strategy: Choose locations based on surroundings, not just hook-ups. "We stayed in the East Loop which is for smaller RVs and tents. it has electricity but no water hookups, however there are water pumps. We stayed at site 72 which is at the beginning of the loop. This site isn't as secluded by trees as the other sites."
