Best Campgrounds near Covert, MI

The western shore of Lake Michigan shapes the camping landscape around Covert, Michigan, where beachfront access is the primary draw for most campgrounds. Covert Park Beach & Campground offers 68 sites nestled between sand dunes and forested hills, with both walk-in tent sites and RV-friendly options with hookups. Within a 15-mile radius, Van Buren State Park Campground provides year-round camping with electric sites and shower facilities, while the Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday features 166 sites including tent spaces, RV hookups, cabins, and glamping accommodations. Most campgrounds in this region prioritize proximity to Lake Michigan's shoreline, with many offering direct beach access or short walking paths to the water. The area's camping options range from basic municipal facilities to more developed private resorts with amenities like swimming pools and recreation areas.

Reservations are essential during the peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Lake Michigan beaches attract substantial crowds. As one camper noted, "Lake Michigan is right there! We walked down to sunset and it was a 5-min walk max." Most campgrounds operate seasonally, typically from April through October, though Van Buren State Park remains open year-round. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F with high humidity, while strong winds off Lake Michigan can affect camping comfort, particularly at exposed beachfront sites. Many campgrounds prohibit alcohol consumption, including Covert Park and several state facilities. Michigan Recreation Passports are required for entry to state parks, costing $11 daily or $32 annually for non-residents, an additional expense beyond camping fees.

Beach access consistently ranks as the top feature in camper reviews, with sunset views over Lake Michigan frequently mentioned as highlights. Bathroom and shower facilities receive mixed reviews, with newer facilities at Covert Park earning praise for cleanliness. Site spacing varies considerably across campgrounds, with one reviewer noting that at Covert Park, "sites are extremely close to each other separated by heavy rope attached to posts." Tent campers report better experiences at walk-in sites, which offer more privacy and natural settings than the main camping areas. Several reviewers mention the quality of nearby amenities, including bike paths connecting to South Haven, approximately 5 miles north of Covert. Wildlife encounters are minimal, though ticks can be problematic in wooded areas, particularly during spring and early summer.

    Warren Dunes State Park Campground

    Nice Campground But Spendy

Nice campground with easy access to dunes and lake, but the nightly fee for a motorhome with electric only (no water) was $60 a night. Quite a bit higher than we would typically go for, but other campgrounds in the area were shut down for the season. The spaces are small but it wasn’t too crowded, bathrooms and showers were very clean.

Beach Campground — Holland State Park

    Entry policy needs revising

Got to campground at 13:00, checked to see if my reserved site was vacant (it was vacant) then went to check in. Attendant told couldn’t check in until 15:00. Had to park in marina parking lot.  Went back to check in and there was a line out to the street (safety issue).  It then took us 1/2 hr to check in then had to wait another 1/2hr in line for water. Got to site at 16:15.  Something has to change. Was told this was a Holland State Park decision because other state parks don’t do this.  Horrible, horrible policy

    Fort Custer Recreation Area

    MTB camp and bike (again)

We camped and rode (again) at Fort Custer.  We've been here 2x before (once in a cabin and once in tents) and this has now officially become a favorite.

We loved our site (so don't book this one) as it's close to the trails for riding.  The campground was almost to capacity, but still some open sites.

All in all this was a great trip, and we even visited Belle's brewery on our way home.

    Covert Park Beach & Campground

    Small, lakeside, chill

This was our first time staying at Covert Park Beach + Campground. We stayed in site 52 with our 21 ft travel trailer. The site is a good size. Tree placement made it a little tricky to back into, but nothing crazy. We stayed Sunday to Saturday, so we got to see it at its bustling weekend peak and the quiet, cozy weekday vibe. Family friendly, dog friendly and kid friendly. Dogs aren't allowed on the beach, but there's a beach a few minutes down the road (Hagar Beach) where you can bring leashed dogs. Sunset views were beautiful. Bathrooms were very clean and showers nice and hot. The two guys who were running the check-in and campground operations were super cool- they were the perfect mix of attentive and laid back. No sewer on campsites but there's a dump station when you enter/exit. Ice and firewood are abundantly available and can be delivered to your site. We loved our stay here. Tree cover is generous, and it really preserves the camping feel. Weekend crowd was fun, friendly and lots of locals. Would definitely stay again!

    Steamboat Park Campground

    Wonderful, well thought through campground.

I have had a very enjoyable stay. The river location is quite nice and the grounds are very well cared for. The site(and all sites, as far as I can see) are quite level. The bathrooms are not just clean and well maintained, but the shower rooms also have a dedicated sink and toilet, which I much appreciate. The washer and dryers in the bathhouse are brand new and take credit cards. While it is near a regional airport, there is close to no air traffic and no commercial traffic I noticed. Overall, probably one of the top 5 campgrounds I have encountered, if the list was for being up to date, well thought out and well provisioned. Everything was top notch.

    Brookside City Park

    More expensive now

Tents sites are now $20 and RV hookups (water and 20/30 amp) are $30. When I got to the police station they were closed for the week but a phone # was provided to call dispatcher and an officer responded promptly to help me get registered. Cash or check only.

    Fort Custer Recreation Area

    A return to my childhood

I camped here countless times throughout my childhood. It was nice returning. I brought back great memories and it struck a balance of staying up with the times but still leaving most to nature.

Since there are no water or sewer hook ups, lines at the dump/fill station can get long.

Sites are easy to get in and out of with RV/TT.

Don’t miss out on the great finishing and hiking. A great plus is still seeing kids rise actual bikes!

Guide to Covert

Campgrounds near Covert, Michigan offer year-round camping opportunities beyond the beachfront focus, with inland options providing different experiences from Lake Michigan's shoreline. The area contains several small inland lakes and river access points, creating alternatives when lake winds intensify or during cooler months. Tent camping options range from walk-in sites in forested settings to more developed facilities with electrical hookups and access to hiking trails.

What to do

Biking the Kal-Haven Trail: The 33-mile Kal-Haven Trail connects South Haven to Kalamazoo, offering a paved path accessible from multiple campgrounds. Kal-Haven Outpost provides direct trail access: "This was a nice campground right on the Kal Haven Trail - about 4 miles from South Haven. It was so convenient to be able to bike ride, hike, or run on the trail."

Blueberry picking: Several campgrounds incorporate blueberry fields as a unique regional activity. Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday features on-site picking opportunities: "This KOA has blueberry fields everywhere on the property. For a period of time in summer and early fall, you can pick your own blueberries in the morning to have in your breakfast pancakes!"

Explore local history: The Eden Springs area contains restored historic buildings from the late 1800s. "There's a lot of interesting history here. It was a cult at one time, there used to be a vegan restaurant and an ice cream parlor, and there was a hotel here at one point as well. What I liked about it was you could walk around the campgrounds and learn about it from the signage."

Fishing in inland waters: Several campgrounds offer fishing ponds with catch-and-release options, providing an alternative to Lake Michigan recreation. "On site fishing ponds are catch and release with lots of active fish to enjoy."

What campers like

Walk-in tent sites: More secluded camping options exist beyond the standard RV spots. "We did pass by the hike-in rustic sites and they looked great. Situated at the top of one of the dune hills, very forested and removed from the nonsense RV campers bring."

New bathroom facilities: Covert Park Beach & Campground has recently upgraded amenities: "They have a brand new bath house in the bigger loop, that will be open as soon as the stay at home order is over, and it looks very nice!" Another camper noted, "New wash house, rinse off after lake play."

Quiet weekday camping: For those seeking less crowded experiences, scheduling affects the experience significantly. "We stayed Sunday to Saturday, so we got to see it at its bustling weekend peak and the quiet, cozy weekday vibe."

Small inland lakes: Some campgrounds offer lake access without Lake Michigan crowds. Dune Lake Campground features "a nice swimming lake with a shallow area that's great for kids." This provides water recreation with less wind exposure than Lake Michigan beaches.

What you should know

Cell coverage limitations: Several campgrounds have limited connectivity. "Cellular data was poor in the campground and on the beach - we needed a 5-minute drive to get good Verizon coverage." Another camper noted, "Overall I recommend this place but be prepared for zero cell service unless you go up the road!"

Shower facilities vary widely: Campground bathrooms receive mixed reviews across locations. "The bathrooms were convenient but a little humid with the high temps they had for the week of July 4th." At another location: "The small loop (sites 1-19) are flat and great for larger parties, the bigger loop (30-64) have some crazy un-level sites mixed in."

Site selection matters: Van Buren State Park Campground has layout considerations: "When you select your campsite, be aware that there's a path through the middle of the campground and some sites are right next to it, meaning very little privacy."

Limited beach size: Water levels affect beach availability at many locations. "Small campsites, outlet on site, clean bathrooms, great walking paths and short walk to the lake. Very family friendly with lots of kids."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-focused amenities: Family campgrounds offer structured activities beyond beach access. "There are a lot of lodging options, tons of kids activities, both free and for a small fee, great pool, cafe and store! Lots of sports equipment to loan as well."

Weekday visits for quieter stays: For a more relaxed family experience, timing matters. "The campground stays nice and clean, the resident campers are so welcoming and the visitors we're very respectful."

Playgrounds and recreation: Coloma/St. Joseph KOA Holiday offers family-specific amenities: "Very clean and well-kept park. Lots of fun activities on the weekends for the kids and FREE! They have movie nights, we met Disney characters, did crafts, and enjoyed the barrel train & ice cream sundaes."

Consider inland options for smaller kids: Families with young children might prefer inland lake swimming. "Nice swimming lake with a shallow area that's great for kids." These areas typically have calmer water than Lake Michigan, which can have strong waves and undertows.

Tips from RVers

Site positioning challenges: Black River Trails Campground provides RV-specific tips: "We stayed in a small 'RV Site' spot on the campground and that gave us our own electrical/water hookup. Each site comes with a picnic table, fire pit, and ample enough space. We weren't 'on top' of the people next to us."

Utility placement: Be prepared for hookup positions that may require extra equipment. "The actual campground was disappointing, the map was not true to date and most sites the electrical box and water hook up is on the wrong side of the site. Bring extra line... we have 50ft hose so we were fine there (line goes through the middle of the site) and 25ft electrical and had to re adjust the camper a few times so it would reach."

Pull-through availability: Some campgrounds offer easier access sites. "Awesome campground! Very friendly staff. Super clean and updated bathrooms. On the kal-haven trail. All spots are pull through. And all spots are close to the bathrooms."

Leveling preparation: Be ready for uneven sites at some locations. "The site is a good size. Tree placement made it a little tricky to back into, but nothing crazy."
