Port Huron KOA offers full hookup RV sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service near Columbus, Michigan. This established campground features spacious pull-through sites that accommodate larger motorhomes and provides water, sewer, and electric hookups. Thousand Trails St. Clair provides RV sites with water hookups but lacks electric connections, operating seasonally from April 30 to October 19. Port Huron Township RV Park includes 50-amp electrical service, sewer hookups, and water connections on paved pads. "The site offers a lot of amenities including pools, put put golf and play areas for the kids. The grounds are well kept. It's very busy. Golf carts are a bit of a pain."

Several parks require advance booking, particularly during summer weekends and holiday periods when sites fill quickly. Dump stations are available at Port Huron KOA, Port Huron Township RV Park, and Jellystone Park North Port Huron, though access can involve wait times during peak checkout periods. Cell service varies significantly between parks, with one reviewer noting "AT&T service is terrible. Our friends have T-Mobile and it is very fast for them." Most parks welcome pets, but rules regarding pet enclosures and designated walking areas differ. Firewood is available for purchase at many locations, and trash collection is provided at all the established RV parks in the area.

McGinnis Lake Modern Campground — Holly Recreation Area

The State of Michigan has dropped the ball…

No sewer or dumps is available at this campground (April 2022). You will have to dump elsewhere. If there was a memo I missed it. Made reservation in winter 2021. Had great Verizon and ok TMobile service. Site itself was easy to level and adequate for our big rig. It was one of 4 50 amp sites in the park. Nice large grassy site and the park was not very full.

    Groveland Oaks County Park

    Kid friendly

This campground has a lake for swimming, water slide, arcade, boat rentals, mini golf, biking trails and fishing. Lots for kids to do... also skate park and 2 playgrounds. Full hookup area is away from most of the weekend traffic with a short cut to get to where all the kids stuff is located. I think it is a little pricier than most monthly rentals in southeast Michigan. We chose for the convenient location for spending the weekends. Our campsite was a little difficult to get into because it was on a curve and there was a seasonal camper with a Class A right across from our site which didn’t allow for a lot of space to maneuver our 26 ft travel trailer. It was, however, fairly close to the park and restrooms.

    Covenant Hills Camp

    Family Friendly and Quiet

Large sites, all full hookup. Plenty of onsight activities on the weekend. Large play areas, dog run, basketball court, lots of walking trails, and family friendly.

    Forester Park Campground

Friendly, but tight and odd utilities

First, some seasonal residents were extremely helpful with our campfire woes. All of the neighbors and their kids were awesome.

We chose this campground because it was close to our home and it was a short trip for our opening weekend.

The store, staff, and ice cream shop were great. We even bought t-shirts to commemorate!

The price was reasonable for 2 nights on memorial day weekend with full hookups and 30 amps ($40 a night). Water was clean a d strong. No issues with electricity.

Some issues we had that we were not expecting: The sewer and water spigot were on opposite ends of our site. I had to race to Raymond's hardware(also friendly!) in town for a 50 foot fresh water hose before they closed.

We also don't not have a slide out, but our trailer was brushed against a tall tree/bush. If we weren't against the tree, our awning may have been against the opposite neighbors' trailer.

The sewer access was slightly uphill from our site, so that caused some issues as well.

In conclusion: We'd definitely return, but we'd be careful about the site location.

    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Nice Michigan State Park

Camped here opening weekend of 2022 (April 29). Nice park with several sites for our bigger rig. Leveling would be more of the challenge. But, we eventually got to 145 which was pretty good and very doable from leveling Stand point. Large well kept grassy site. Nice fire ring. No water or sewer at site but fill and dump available in park. Our Verizon WiFi coverage was good as was our TMobile. Staff was very accommodating and helpful. Seemed there to serve. We experienced no issues with our 30 amp (20 & 30 only available). Didn’t need air conditioning but electric heat was our main heat source and worked fine.

    The Holly Campground

    KOA

We normally have no issues with KOAs. It is preseason, and still early, so we understand there’s some bumps. But we had a difficult time finding a site that would work for our rig. Everything was soggy, roads washed out and our rig sank. Very few full hook up sites and none available for long term (month or more).

    Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

    Quick get away

Wonderful place for a quick get away. Park is clean. Beach is a 1.8 mile hike from the East loop in the campground but is well worth the walk. (Trail is not stroller/wagon friendly) If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad. Extensive mountain biking trails and the lake is open to boating, kayaking, and other water sports. Park offers lots of private sites! We stayed in site 118 and could not see neighboring sites! The site was very spacious and offered picnic table, fire ring, paved pad, and electrical hook up. (hook up in this specific site was considerably far away.)

McGinnis Lake Modern Campground — Holly Recreation Area

    Quick getaway

Great campground for a weekend trip. The day use area across the street has a really nice beach and some great hiking trails.

We’ve stayed in the maple loop and hickory. Hickory loop is more in the woods style feel. Maple has a nice little dog run area that we took advantage of. Both of those loops have little nature trails that are quick and easy to hike.

When we visited in May the invasive gypsy moth caterpillars were really bad. Swarms on the legs of the picnic tables and dropping from the trees. However we came back in July and we didn’t see any at all.

Camping near Columbus, Michigan offers travelers recreational vehicle accommodations surrounded by Michigan's distinctive hardwood forests and proximity to Lake Huron. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F during peak camping season, with humidity levels increasing around water features. Campsites throughout the region vary in distance from major amenities, with many facilities requiring advance reservations during holiday weekends.

What to do

**Water activities: Access to Lake Huron provides swimming and boating options. Jellystone Park North Port Huron features "a huge camp store, an ice cream place, and tons of amenities. You can rent golf carts, little paddle boats, and more. There is also an awesome water park for the kids and it's right across the road from Lake Huron if you want to swim in the Great Lake."

**Hiking trails: The region has multiple trails within driving distance of campgrounds. At McGinnis Lake Modern Campground, visitors appreciate the "wonderful park with hiking trails and beautiful lakes. Campsites are wooded and pretty private." The recreation area contains "3 lakes, tons of trails, and even a splash zone for kids."

**Mini golf and outdoor games: Family recreation options extend beyond traditional camping activities. Multiple parks offer mini golf, though quality varies. One reviewer mentioned that at Jellystone Park North Port Huron, "The mini gold course was torn up in several places. The ponds and water areas were not working. Entire course has been neglected."

What campers like

**Privacy and shade: Many campers value wooded sites that provide separation from neighbors. At P.L. Graham Park & Campground, "There are 10 spots. This a first come, first served campground. There is ample space between campgrounds." Additionally, "There are only 2 campsites located nestled in the woods, the others are located in a rather flat, open area with trees around one side, and the lake on the other."

**Value for cost: Price considerations factor into campground selection. Dancing Fire Glamping and RV Resort received feedback noting: "Right off the highway. Clean. $69/night for a pad with power. We have a pop up tent and a utility trailer. Nice pool. Showers and sitewide wifi. Would have rated a 5 but the price seems high for a tent."

**Water access: Proximity to beaches and lakes rates highly among reviews. Lexington Park Campground stands out as the "Only park in the area with trees for shade at your site AND access to Lake Huron." Another reviewer confirmed, "You are within walking distance to the water. Most campsites have a good view of the water."

What you should know

**Cell service variability: Internet access differs significantly by carrier and location. At Thousand Trails St. Clair, a camper noted "This place is beautiful and we'll absolutely be back! The entire facility was clean and staff couldn't have been friendlier. The only downside was the abysmal Verizon signal. I'm talking 3 mbps bad."

**Bathroom facilities: Quality and availability of restrooms varies between parks. Some facilities maintain high standards while others need attention. A reviewer at P.L. Graham Park mentioned "Cute park but bathrooms need major cleaning/updates," while Lexington Park received praise that "Bathrooms are always clean."

**Seasonal operation: Most rv sites near Columbus, Michigan operate seasonally rather than year-round. Washakie Golf & RV Resort runs from May 1 to October 31, Jellystone Park North Port Huron operates April 15 to October 31, and Thousand Trails St. Clair maintains a similar schedule from April 30 to October 19.

Tips for camping with families

**Kid-friendly amenities: Facilities with dedicated children's activities reduce planning stress. Port Huron Township RV Park receives praise as a place that "celebrates major US & Canadian holidays. If you want a peaceful camp trip, this is the place (if it's not during a holiday)."

**Noise levels: Consider noise tolerance when booking sites. Parks with many recreational facilities tend to be louder. One reviewer described Port Huron KOA as having "Hundreds of unsupervised rug-rats swarming like locust over all the roads without looking where they were going. Boom boxes blaring rap music in competition among sites."

**Playground access: Parks with playground equipment offer activity options for younger children. Lexington Park Campground provides a "Great playground for the kids" while McGinnis Lake Modern Campground has "several playgrounds, bench swings, play fields and even a basketball court."

Tips from RVers

**Site spacing: RV sites near Columbus, Michigan vary significantly in privacy levels. At McGinnis Lake Modern Campground, "Sites were spacious, we loved the national forest." Another reviewer mentioned they "stayed in the Maple loop which had several semi-private sites screened from neighbors by trees."

**Hookup availability: Water, electrical and sewer connections differ between facilities. Port Huron Township RV Park has "pretty much any site type you could ask for" according to one camper. Another noted the park is "very simple and still has all the basic features needed for your camping needs."

**Rental options: Golf cart rentals improve mobility at larger facilities but require advance planning. At Jellystone Park North Port Huron, "It's a huge campground so if you aren't camping up front, it's worth it to rent a golf cart!" Another camper mentioned similar limitations: "When we tried to rent a golf cart we were told there were no more... the staff told us that we should have booked it when we booked our site."
