Pontiac Lake Recreation Area
Private camping
Very private sites. I was surprised at how well each site was hidden from the others. Restrooms can be a bit far from some sites. Nice little dog park by the beach too.
Port Huron KOA features pet-friendly sites throughout their extensive campground where pets are welcomed at tent sites, RV spaces, and select cabin accommodations. Lakeport State Park Campground also permits pets with proper vaccination records and leash compliance. Both campgrounds require pets to be on leashes no longer than 6 feet when outside accommodations. Port Huron KOA provides designated pet waste stations and a dedicated pet exercise area where dogs can stretch their legs after travel. Algonac State Park Campground, Ruby Campground, and Emmett KOA all maintain similar pet policies with designated areas for walking dogs. Most locations implement quiet hours regulations that include barking management policies to maintain peaceful camping environments. The grounds are well kept with plenty of space for walking pets.
Dog-friendly hiking trails connect several campgrounds to natural areas suitable for pet exploration. Ruby Campground's riverside location offers water access points where dogs can cool off during summer months. Emergency veterinary services are available within 20 minutes of most camping locations, with the closest full-service animal hospital located in Port Huron. Campgrounds provide varying terrain from grassy sites to more wooded areas where pets can experience different scents and environments. Port Huron Township RV Park offers simple amenities while maintaining all basic features needed for camping with pets. Seasonal considerations include tick prevention during summer months and extra bedding for pets during spring and fall when temperatures fluctuate. The management at some locations can be strict about pet policies, so having vaccination records readily available is recommended.
"They do have a little amusement park right next door so that can help entertain the young ones for a while and we did appreciate the dog park."
"This is probably the best campground in Michigan. Lots of activities to do. Swimming pools, bicycles for rent, playgrounds, pizza, children's train, etc."
"I've stayed all over michigan, and this is one of the best. Your right close to the water, so you can watch the ships. I was very comfortable here, and I had my dog."
"Great campground with access to the beautiful St. Clair River as it runs between Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair."
$30 - $34 / night
"Right off Lake Michigan. Great trails for easy bike riding. Helpful, friendly staff"
"Lakeport is one of the hidden gems in Michigan. We all have heard that you can find Petoskey Stones in Northern Michigan, well.... look no further!!!!!"
"The drive is short and there are plenty of amenities to keep the kiddos busy all day."
"We will definitely come back when it is warm enough to swim in the lake!"
"We stayed a couple nights. but were gone all day at some family functions close by. It was a good set up for us. Staff was friendly and helpful."

"Right off the highway. Clean. $69/night for a pad with power. We have a pop up tent and a utility trailer. Nice pool. Showers and sitewide wifi."
"The beach is nice, a little small, but clean and fun (would be nice if your pets were allowed to swim also). The only real negative I have is that for each group site there is a single fire pit."
"The park has a beautiful 2.5 mile trail around the lake that makes this campground great. We brought our own kayaks but they do rent boats. We saw deer and rabbit."
$15 / night
"We showed up fresh off the road from AZ starting a new life here in the great state of Michigan. Two gentlemen met us right at the entrance they seemed to be doing work around the area."
"You drive up the entrance of the park, and on your right there'll be a trailer with a sign that says parking. You will park your car there over night/during the day."

Great opportunities for winter sports. Pools, lakes, mini golf. Designed for young families. Pet friendly but has restrictions on the type of dog.
This is a quiet, friendly and family campground. The staff is very willing to help any way they can. The sites are level and spacious.
A great place for the kids! With a beach, playground and paved roads is nice but the frosting in this cake is the petting zoo. Animals from bunnies, peacocks & cats to horses, goats and of course Milton the burro, get it? Milton Burro, LOL
The store has stuff for the kids at very reasonable prices and the ice cream shop across the street is a nice walk after dinner. There's a light there for safe crossing, too.
Try this place, you'll add this to your good memories.
No credit or debit cards. Cash and checks only.
If you like this type of camping then this theme park camping is for you. It's right in town with sparse trees and very small sites. Make sure to mark the max allowed occupancy to be camping because, if you don't, you will be charged extra cash for your child to spend the day with you while spending money on their amenities. They do have a little amusement park right next door so that can help entertain the young ones for a while and we did appreciate the dog park. It's not a horrible place as we did enjoy ourselves the first visit there. The campsite we had was in the back, between 2 cabins, and that one was actually a decent size. The 2nd trip was a bummer as we were reprimanded for having my girlfriends daughter show up and have breakfast with us. Which, by the way, we bought from the and she shopped in their souvenir store and purchased items. We had to pay another $5 so we could spend that extra money at their campground. Other than that, enjoy.
A fun little campground with a nice bunch of petting zoo type animals! The beach is clean and the lake is warm! Very nice layout with walking trail around the lake. The only complaint was not nearly enough trash cans around (like, none easy to find) and the bathrooms were nasty for our 2 day visit. Price per night for full hook up was $40 :-)
Level sites with full hookup. Catch and release fishing pond. Nice little swimming area. Nice playground. Cute little petting zoo. Stayed for a week at $320.
Holly Rec is huge and there is so much you can do. Camping is pretty secluded. Lots and lots of hiking available , pets allowed which is awesome, disc golfing , lakes for great kayaking and there is a wonderful beach! Something for everyone! you can get away here , and take a much needed break from real life.
First time out with the camper and we wanted to stay close to home so we found a campground right outside the city. You couldn't tell how close we were because there were so many trees in the area. Looked like up north
While there are plenty of trees around the grounds and lake there are not too many trees between the camp sites so you do totally see your neighbor. Bathrooms were clean at all times. Showers available. I saw basketball and ladder ball. There is a big lake with a boat launch and swimming area. Pets are allowed (leashed) Fire pit and picnic table at camp site. It was a grass site and not paved, some definitely looked more even than others. I did see more activities but we did not check them out. We also didn't go hiking due to the air quality/Canadian fires.
We would go again for a quick get away!
We came here two years ago. My husband suggested the place because his family used to come here when he was a kid. There were many activities for everyone to do, especially for the kids. I don’t believe the cabins are pet friendly though. It’s probably the only reason we haven’t been back. We’ll definitely go back when we have a camper.
Columbus Township offers numerous pet-friendly camping options within 30 miles of Port Huron. The area features mixed terrain with river access points, wooded sites, and open grassland camping areas. Summer temperatures range from 70-85°F, while spring and fall can bring wide temperature swings that require extra consideration for pets and campers alike.
Water activities on the Black River: P.L. Graham Park & Campground provides direct access to the Black River where you can fish or launch canoes. "There is a canoe launch. Rustic tent camping only, There is a water Hydrant there for water that I believe is drinkable," notes Walker L. about this former Boy Scout camp.
Freighter watching along St. Clair River: Algonac State Park Campground offers prime viewing spots for large ships. "Love staying here and watching the huge ships come in and out of the channel," says Cassy A., highlighting one of the unique attractions in this region.
Hiking trails with varied terrain: Addison Oaks County Park features extensive trail systems. "Tons of trails for hiking and biking. They have kids activities on the weekends, a lake for swimming, great playgrounds and everything is really clean," writes Wendy K., describing the park's natural amenities.
Beach access with rock collecting: At Lakeport State Park Campground, the shoreline offers unique treasures. "This beach is mostly rocks and I have to say that I have found the most Petoskey stones (State of Michigan Stone) and pudding stones (a conglomerate of rocks with jasper sticking onto the rock)," shares Stephanie C.
Variety of camping environments: Ruby Campground provides riverside camping with a personal touch. According to Sean H., "Ruby is a fitting name for this gem. This is the most wholesome cute campground I've ever been to. It has a family owned summer camp vibe and the owners are very kind and helpful."
Quiet camping options: Port Huron Township RV Park offers peaceful settings away from busier destinations. Terri W. notes, "If you want a peaceful camp trip, this is the place (if it's not during a holiday). It is right off of a major interstate, so you'll hear occasional noise. But overall, I love this place."
Seasonal crowds vary significantly: Summer weekends at Port Huron KOA can get extremely busy. George H. describes it as "Total insanity" with "Hundreds of unsupervised rug-rats swarming like locust over all the roads without looking where they were going" and notes that sites can be "so close to one another it was hard to tell where one started and another ended."
Campground layouts differ substantially: Algonac State Park features open sites with minimal tree cover. Stephanie C. observes that "This park is a little different than most State parks as it is right off a main road and it doesn't give that outdoorsy feel" and "I like to see trees and have some shade, but this didn't really give us that option."
Road conditions inside some parks need attention: At Algonac State Park, Rodger M. warns, "Sooo many ruts that I was deeply concerned for the undercarriage of both my truck and camper. Again, they are charging the same state fees as some of the nicer campgrounds we've stayed at, but the roads were inexcusable for a campground."
Activity-filled weekends: Lakeport State Park Campground offers structured family programming. Cole G. mentions, "There is trails to ride your bike around and two playgrounds to keep the kids busy... on weekends."
Halloween camping events: Multiple dog-friendly campgrounds near Columbus run special Halloween-themed weekends. Wendy K. reports, "We come for Halloween camping every year! We love this campground. There is a ton to do for all ages. The kids keep busy all day long!" at Port Huron KOA.
Campground section selection matters: When visiting with children, consider which part of the campground best matches your needs. At Lakeport, Stephanie C. advises, "The northern section seems to be the louder section and the southern section seems to be the more laid back quiet section... The south section has more of a woodsy outdoor feel while the north section has more of an open space, smaller lots, crowded feel."
Pad types and site characteristics: Addison Oaks County Park features cement pads for RVs. Ron E. notes, "Nice quick weekend retreat campground. Cement pads, water, and electric. Loop C is spacious with some trees."
Connectivity considerations: Cell service varies dramatically between campgrounds. At Thousand Trails St. Clair, David B. warns about "the abysmal Verizon signal. I'm talking 3 mbps bad," which can affect work-from-camping setups.
Site selection strategy: At Port Huron KOA, Alex H. recommends, "If you're in a camper I'd recommend sites 54,179,180. Those sites have a bit of a backyard to them and more space."
