    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Campgrounds near Newaygo, Michigan provide multiple options for outdoor enthusiasts along the Muskegon River and surrounding lakes. The area features established facilities like Ed H. Henning Park and Salmon Run Campground, which accommodate both tent and RV campers. Several locations also offer cabin rentals and glamping opportunities. Twinwood Lake Campground provides more rustic camping experiences with connections to the North Country Trail system. Many campgrounds in this region cater to water recreation, with river access being particularly prominent at locations like Mystery Creek Campground, which offers sites directly along the Muskegon River shoreline.

Most campgrounds in the Newaygo area operate seasonally, typically from mid-April through mid-October, with peak season falling between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. "We camped for memorial weekend 2019. The staff was great. The showers and bathrooms were clean," noted one visitor to Ed H. Henning Park. Reservations are strongly recommended for weekend stays during summer months, particularly at waterfront locations. Many campgrounds provide amenities including electric hookups, drinking water, and shower facilities, though service levels vary significantly. The more rustic Twinwood Lake Campground features vault toilets and limited facilities but compensates with natural surroundings and trail access. Weather conditions can change rapidly, with summer thunderstorms common in the region.

River recreation represents a defining feature of the camping experience in this area. Campers frequently mention the convenience of river tubing and kayaking directly from their campsite. One camper described, "We stay here at least once a year and do an annual river trip with a bunch of friends. It's a nice campground with a small park, pond, full bathrooms, group sites, and even a couple small cabins." Family-friendly facilities are common, with many campgrounds offering playgrounds, swimming areas, and organized activities. Noise levels vary significantly between locations, with some visitors noting louder environments at campgrounds with numerous seasonal sites or extensive recreation facilities. Sites directly along the Muskegon River tend to be the most sought-after, especially those offering both privacy and water access.

      Fisherman's Landing & Campground

      Very nice, affordable campground

Super cute little campground, it’s definitely located in an odd spot but nonetheless it’s a nice campground. The staff are very kind, and the lake view is beautiful. Also located very close to drop off points for kayaking down Muskegon river, which btw is also a beautiful river trip! I would definitely stay here again. The only thing I wish was a little different was that they would add a dog run, and clean up what used to be a beach area.

      Fun and friendly campground

The staff is awesome and super friendly! Remember you from the time you set your reservation. Take care of all your needs and have awesome evening activities. It may be small but just right. Every site is on the water and no bad spots to fish.

Lake Michigan Campground — Muskegon State Park

Sand Dunes & Rolling Lake Waves

Framed by dunes on the western side of the campground and shaded pines in every direction, the campground here at Muskegon State Park feels like it was built for families who crave both forest calm and water views. The 140 sites are generous, spacious and peaceful, and while the bathhouses have a little age to them, they’re spotless and well-tended. Our boys spent half the trip barefoot on the sandy trail leading to the channel, where they splashed in the shallows and waved at passing fishing boats. I’d recommend Muskegon State Park at Lake Michigan campground for families who love the scent of pine mixed with lake breeze, the sound of kids laughing down the trail and the EZ comfort of a well-loved state park that has a manned ranger booth when checking in adding to overall sense of security.

      Hill and Hollow RV Park

      Great campground

      We love Hill and Hollow!

It’s a great campground for our group of friends who have kids in a wide variety of ages

We have kids from 5 to 16 and this allows them to do what they love - some like the go carts area, the pool, the playground or just hanging out

It’s close to pentwater and not far from ludington

The campground staff are super friendly and we have had a great experience here

      Holiday Camping Resort

      Nice and rustic

The campground is really nice and in the woods. Pool table in the office, swimming pool seems nice and restrooms/showers are clean. Only down side I can say is my campsite is really narrow. Other than that I love it and the kids really like it.

Lucky Lake Campground & Outdoor Center LLC

      Quiet

Quiet camping is available AFTER the Electric Festival is over earlier in the season. Just drive in and find a site anywhere  next to the  water under some trees for shade.  Great for tieing a dog up in the shade where they can reach the shoreline to  wade (If you pick the right site). Mostly rustic but having practically the whole campground to yourselves is priceless. The lake

has sandbars and floatation platforms but also drop offs close to the shore so not recommended for small kids and novice swimmers.

Great place to go impromptu when everyplace is full.

      Buttersville Park Campground

      Great location; packed-in sites

Came in on a Sunday, and the campground was packed. With a few exceptions, the sites are super close together. That’s not my preference, but it was clear many campers come in groups booking several neighboring sites, and it was fun to see everyone enjoying themselves. We were fortunate to have one of the larger sites(#3), which gave us plenty of room. The location is outstanding, perched on a Lake Michigan bluff with 70+ stairs leading to the beach. If stairs aren't great for you, you can also access the beach from the public park just around the corner. The campground staff was friendly and helpful at check-in, and they sell quality firewood at a reasonable price. The shower house was in good condition, though the women's bathroom could have been cleaner. The pit toilets near our site also needed attention. If you're looking for privacy and spacious, secluded camping, this probably isn't the campground for you. But if you enjoy a lively, family-friendly atmosphere in an amazing location, it's worth considering.

      Sandy Beach County Park

      Over all good/ family friendly.

We have camped here many times over the years and have always enjoyed our visits. The campground has made some great investments and improvements, which are appreciated. However, the overall maintenance has unfortunately declined. It is noticeable in the condition of the shower houses, tree trimming, staining, painting, and other general upkeep. A little more attention to these details would make a big difference, especially in the restroom facilities. This is a great campground for children and families, with plenty to enjoy. One area that could use improvement is consistency in how campground rules are enforced. During our stay, we observed several occasions where some seasonal campers—and even some weekend campers—were allowed to get away with things that others were not. We personally did not have any issues, but it did seem as though certain campers were singled out while others were overlooked, even when there was no obvious reason. Overall, this is still a good place to camp, and we will likely return. With a stronger focus on maintenance and more consistent rule enforcement, it could easily become an excellent campground.

Green spaces on both sides of site 290. A bit more room compared to the other inner loop sites. The outer loop sites have a bit more space. No ground foliage so you can see your neighbors clearly!

    Guide to Newaygo

Camping near Newaygo, Michigan centers around the area's diverse waterways including the Muskegon River, Hardy Pond, and smaller lakes scattered throughout the region's mixed hardwood forests. The region sits at approximately 800 feet elevation with camping season typically running from mid-April through October, though some rustic sites remain open year-round. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F during the day with nighttime lows reaching 45-55°F, requiring campers to pack accordingly.

    What to do

Disc golf adventures: The 18-hole course at Newaygo State Park Campground draws enthusiasts throughout the season. "I stayed here for a couple nights while I was on a business trip up that way, because camping is way cooler than staying at hotels. It's all rustic sites, but the campground is nice. There's good hiking, an awesome disc golf course, and the lake right there with boat launches for fishing," notes Ryan L T.

Hiking the North Country Trail: Twinwood Lake Campground serves as an access point to extensive trail systems. "Hiked north about 5 miles out of Croton, starting from the campground. The hike is easy, with a few very short steep elevation changes. The trail oscilates between being very 'green tunnel' and wide expansive views of pines and older trees without much ground cover," reports Jennifer O.

River tubing: Chinook Camping provides direct access to river recreation with on-site tube rentals. "This is a great campground for tubing down the river. They rent the tubes right at the campground, take you up river, and then you get out of the river back at the campground," explains Clint, who appreciated the convenient river exit at the campsite.

    What campers like

Rustic camping options: Twinwood Lake Campground offers a more secluded experience with just five sites. "Five secluded camping spots with large sites and plenty of room for tents and vehicles. First come, first serve for site reservations. The weekend we were there four spots were full. We arrived before noon on a Friday," shares Twila B.

Spacious waterfront sites: Many campers appreciate the room to spread out at Newaygo State Park. "Very wooded and spread out among the campsites! Close to the water, and there's a trail along the perimeter of the campground with amazing views. Great stargazing as well," according to Elise R.

Clean facilities: Sandy Beach County Park maintains their amenities well. "Bathrooms are kept up well, individual shower rooms are nice. They do have a washer and dry for longer stays but only one unit so you may have to wait awhile," notes Brenton Y., highlighting features that matter for extended stays.

    What you should know

Temperature fluctuations: Nights can get chilly even in summer. "We came mid-May and it was very cold at night," reports Melissa B. about her stay at Hoffmaster State Park, highlighting the need for proper sleeping gear year-round.

Site selection matters: Camping comfort varies widely between locations and specific sites. "The sites are deep but many are close together. Ours had a little extra room but was next to the vault toilet," explains R.B. about Newaygo State Park, suggesting careful research when booking.

Shower conditions vary: Little Switzerland Resort and Campground received mixed reviews about their facilities. "They were clean, let me put that out there, what they lacked was hot water in the showers or sinks. Added to that they have very old school 5-second pop back up knobs to engage the water," cautions Doreen B.

    Tips for camping with families

Camp-based activities: Chinook Camping offers numerous family entertainment options. "This place has it all. Camping, river trips, pool, disc golf course, arcade and so much more. The playground area is so nice & everything is very well kept," reports Melissa F.

Beach access considerations: Access to swimming areas can involve significant walking. "The walk down & back to the beach is pretty strenuous if you are not used to the dunes & a hill. If you are elderly or not in shape you might go to the beach at an easier access point," advises Whitney A. about Hoffmaster State Park Campground.

Outdoor recreation for children: Several campgrounds cater specifically to younger visitors. "I bring the kids to this park every 4th of July weekend, we absolutely love it. I always reserve my site on the Poplar side, due to it having closer access to the lake to swim. Outhouses and water and pump are a bonus. The drive is paved so we always bring bikes for the kiddos!" shares Destiny K. about Newaygo State Park.

    Tips from RVers

Site access challenges: Some campgrounds have infrastructure limitations. "They have very narrow roads that were very difficult to maneuver a large trailer. Lots were smaller and hard to back into," warns Clint about Chinook Camping, important information for larger rigs.

Seasonal site differences: Brower Park Campground offers various camping sections with different characteristics. "Brower Park is a quiet campground with three separate areas with sites. They accommodate large RVs as well as smaller trailers and tents. Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table. Electricity and water hookup is included at each site," notes Heather Q.

Dump station timing: Holiday weekends create congestion. "I did notice the backup of campers at the two campground dump stations Sunday before 1pm checkout," observes Shelly B. about Hoffmaster State Park, suggesting RVers plan accordingly.
