Most campgrounds in the region close for winter, typically operating from May through mid-October. Pet policies differ between facilities, with most allowing dogs but imposing leash requirements and breed restrictions. Propane is not widely available on-site at most parks, requiring travelers to fill tanks in nearby towns. Dump stations are available at most developed campgrounds, though the quality of bathroom and shower facilities receives mixed reviews.

    Douglas Forest RV Resort

    Awesome Campground In The Forest

We had an incredible stay at Douglas Forest RV Resort! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how peaceful and well-maintained everything was. The RV sites are spacious and easy to navigate, with full hookups and strong Wi-Fi— a big plus for us since we work remotely on the road. What really sets this place apart is the location. You’re literally steps away from Douglas State Forest, which made morning hikes and evening strolls absolutely magical. It’s pet-friendly too, and our dog loved the wooded trails and open areas. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the camp store had everything we needed. Even though the recreation area is still being built, the amenities already in place more than made up for it. We’re already planning our next trip for summer when the pool opens! If you’re looking for a relaxing spot that blends nature with convenience, look no further. Douglas Forest RV Resort is a true hidden gem!

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Spacious Skies French Pond

Comes with a surprise French Pond

The campground has a gravel area at the sites where the fire ring and picnic tables are. Where we parked our trailer was some gravel sand and dirt. We were at the end of a lane, backing in was fine we are small, 21 feet including tongue, we fit fine. Great site across from a beach, on French Pond I’m guessing is at least 25 acres. Most of the sights are long term. Camp was pretty much full, even then it was quiet. Restroom closed to covid, some campgrounds kept them open and just cleaned more. Well no complaint here we’re self contained. Some areas could use some tidying up. Still I would gladly stay here again.

    Forest Lake Campgrounds

Weekend stay, lots of seasonal camping

Site was clean, easy to get in/out with 21' travel trailer. Swimming at the beach wasn't inviting. Lots of seasonal campers with years of lawn ornaments. There was a sense of the campground being clicky place. Pet friendly. Mixed emotions....

The area features mixed hardwood forests with elevations between 800-1200 feet and an average summer temperature of 75-85°F during the primary camping season. Most Baldwinville area campgrounds report significant seasonal closures from late October through April due to harsh winter conditions.

What to do

Hiking at wilderness areas: Douglas State Forest near Douglas Forest RV Resort offers extensive trail networks for day hikes. "You're literally steps away from Douglas State Forest, which made morning hikes and evening strolls absolutely magical," reports one camper.

Waterfall exploration: Hamilton Falls trail at Jamaica State Park Campground provides moderate hiking with scenic rewards. "We hiked the west river trail (which leads right out of the campground) to Hamilton falls which is a gravel closed road that follows the west river upstream 2 miles to Hamilton falls trail which then leads up hill for another mile to the falls," explains one visitor, adding "People have lost their lives at these falls so be extra cautious with children."

Fishing opportunities: Many local campgrounds offer catch-and-release fishing options. One visitor to Sandy Beach Campground noted, "Sandy beach by the water has plenty of room to relax out in the sun as well as launch areas to set out in a paddle boat, canoe or row boat, all available on site."

What campers like

Clean, functional sites: Visitors consistently mention site quality at Woodmore Family Campground and RV Park. "The grounds were beautiful and the sites were a good size. Very happy with the facility and will be returning for sure," reported one tent camper.

Seasonal activities calendar: Many campgrounds organize regular weekend events. A visitor to Woodmore Family Campground noted, "Weekend is Party Time when the gang pulls in on Friday Night. Very loud until after 10:00 on Friday/Saturday."

Swimming amenities: Pool facilities receive positive reviews at Spacious Skies Minute Man. "Heated pool was great!" mentions one camper, while another adds, "Pool is small but quality. We enjoyed the ping pong table!! Also have arcade, volleyball, and pet walk area."

What you should know

Electrical system concerns: Multiple campgrounds report power reliability issues. At Douglas Forest RV Resort, one visitor observed, "The electrical system needs significant attention. Multiple RVs share single pedestals, and we observed exposed wire connections and pest issues at electrical boxes. Power fluctuations are common during warm weather, causing frequent breaker trips."

Water quality varies: Swimming areas at some locations have vegetation issues. At Sandy Beach Campground, a visitor noted, "The sandy beach is nice but the swimming area is quite weedy."

Quiet time enforcement: Campgrounds have varying approaches to noise management. One Jamaica State Park camper reported, "At night, we all had a great sleeping night with no crazy neighbors or dogs."

Interior road conditions: Many campgrounds feature challenging internal roadways. One Spacious Skies Minute Man visitor noted, "Roads are a little interesting to navigate, and definitely aren't the straight lines on their map!"

Tips for camping with families

Playground considerations: Camp Coldbrook Golf & RV Resorts has mixed reviews on recreation facilities. "The Olympic size pool was not filled at the time but it did not effect our stay at all, there was a smaller pool for those who wanted to cool off," reported one visitor.

Weekend vs. weekday atmosphere: Several campgrounds report dramatic differences between weekday and weekend experiences. A Sandy Beach Campground visitor noted, "We enjoyed our stay. The first site we got was way too small for our tent and they accommodated us and gave us a choice of two others to pick from. A lot of seasonal people but friendly. Playground is on the beach."

Bug preparation: Insect activity can be intense at certain times. A Spacious Skies Minute Man camper advised, "Bring bug spray especially if it's humid or raining."

Historic sites proximity: Multiple campgrounds offer access to educational opportunities. "Easy to get into Boston by train. Level sites, quiet, and very clean restrooms make this a perfect spot for touring historic Boston, Concord, & Lexington," notes one Spacious Skies Minute Man visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site width considerations: Many RV sites in the region are narrower than expected. At Hidden Valley RV and Golf Park, one RVer noted, "The water and electric were between our site and the next on one side and sewer between our site and the one on the other side. This made it difficult to place our trailer on the slanted site and reach all services."

Power management: Electrical capacity constraints affect larger motorhomes. A Douglas Forest RV Resort visitor recommended: "Power fluctuations are common during warm weather, causing frequent breaker trips."

Year-round camping options: While most campgrounds close seasonally, some remain open. A Field and Stream RV Park visitor mentioned, "They offer all year round camping. Great site right next to the water. Sites are clean and well equipped. Coin laundry with nice machine."
