What to Do
Kayaking through cypress waterways: At Pocomoke River State Park Campground, paddlers can explore multiple waterways. "We have kayaked north to Snow Hill, Md, south to Milburn Landing, west up Nassawango Creek, and Corkers Creek at the campsite. We have also kayaked out of Byrd Park, in Snow Hill. All these kayak trails are wonderful! Plenty to see, no bugs, no mosquitoes..some biting flies if you go into the lily pad areas."
Winter beach camping: The off-season offers a different experience at Delaware beaches with fewer crowds. "We grew up here and the beach camping is awesome if you have a self contained vehicle that is 4x4. A permit is required but it's for 12 months. Beware if the wind is out of the west the bugs are vicious."
Free recreational equipment: Some campgrounds provide complimentary gear. "Bike rentals are free (donations accepted), there are several hiking/biking/horse trails, disc golf, and canoe/kayak/peddle boat rentals (in season). 45-minute Pontoon boat tours are available on weekends Memorial Day–Labor Day."
Evening campfire programs: Ranger-led activities occur regularly at many parks. "When not blocked by pandemic proposals, the nature center is a hub of educational activity and some great ranger programs. The park can get crowded fast. The eastern shore gets busy quick, even on the weekdays."

Waterfront camping views: Delaware Seashore State Park Campground offers unique coastal perspectives. "Our site was almost directly under the bridge (and also a power pole!) but this was cool, especially at night when the bridge was lit up."
Wildlife encounters: Animal sightings enhance the camping experience. "A deer hung out by the campfire at night, and in the morning there were horse tracks all over the sight. We chose to stay in October with less people and less bugs."
Western-themed activities: Sun Outdoors Frontier Town offers unique entertainment options. "Has waterpark, putt putt golf, pools, allows pets. Also has Wild West Show and Ice Cream Parlor. Very enjoyable campground for the whole family. Pavilion offers crafts and DJ nights."
What You Should Know
Off-season advantages: Visiting during non-peak times provides different benefits. "We have been going here for years. We always go during the winter or early spring months to avoid the bugs as they are awful during the spring and summer. Do not feed or pet the horses!"
Seasonal insect challenges: Bug populations vary significantly throughout the year. "The one big problem with both Shad and Milburn are the bugs. It gets insanely humid here, and the mosquitoes, flies, and ticks take full advantage- especially if you decide to hike through the nearby State Forest."
Food storage requirements: Wildlife management requires careful practices. "The horses are giant trash pandas. They're smart and can open latches so do bring bungee cords, kayak straps, or ratchet straps to lock all of your food in cases or coolers."
Water conditions: Shad Landing Campground has specific water characteristics. "The area is also a natural mosquito repellent because of the ph in the Cypress Tree waters."

The kids and I at least enjoyed that part." Beach camping near Parsonsburg offers various dog-friendly options with different swimming conditions.

Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Be prepared for uneven terrain. "They are not level and have a sandy base so it took a bit of work to finally get the rig level, even with auto-levelers."
Size restrictions: Some dog-friendly campgrounds near Parsonsburg have limitations. "RV sites are very tight. Anything over 35' in my opinion will be hard to get into sites."
Hookup variations: Assateague Island National Seashore Oceanside Campground has specific utility arrangements. "No electric and generators are only allowed until a certain time at night. We've been twice so I guess you could say we liked it."
Weather considerations: Be aware of potential wind impacts. "The winds were nuts and over 50mph. We switched sites to spare our slide side, so caution to look at windy before going."
