RV camping near Lutherville Timonium, Maryland offers seasonal options within a 30-45 mile radius. The area experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 85°F and winter lows around 25°F. Most campgrounds in this region operate from early April through late October, with only a few sites offering year-round availability for motorhome travelers.
What to do
Water recreation access: Bay Front Mobile Home Court & RV provides water access points for fishing, while Thousand Trails Circle M sits along a horseshoe bend in the river. "The campground sits in the center of a horseshoe curve of the river, bring tubes and kayaks! We didn't know but went and bought a tube and spent the day on the river!" reports Karla R.
Historical exploration: Located about 40 miles from Lutherville Timonium, Gettysburg Campground serves as a convenient base for battlefield tours. "If you are looking for a campground that is very close to an historical National Park not to mention shopping and restaurants, this is for you," notes Jim G. The campground is "a few minute drive to historic Gettysburg. It's nice and out of the way of the busy parts of town," adds Brandon W.
Farm activities: Families seeking agricultural experiences can visit Thousand Trails Gettysburg Farm where campers interact with livestock. "We've enjoyed mini-golf, feeding the animals, 'hiking' through the cornfield, fishing, and campfires," explains Kasey M. Another camper adds, "What's better then hanging out camping on a working farm? Got a kick out of the children playing with the kids (baby goats) pigs, goats, chickens, horses and even lamas."
What campers like
Waterfront camping options: Many campers enjoy sites directly on the water at Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina. "Beautiful water front sites and good location right off 95. Cute little dock, fishing from your campsite if waterfront and an area to put in small boats or kayaks," reports Casey L. Another camper writes, "The waterfront sites are pricy but right on the water with great views. Some of the trailer sites are a tough back in but worth the trouble."
Recreational amenities: Thousand Trails Circle M offers indoor and outdoor pools, mini-golf, and river access. "The kids loved it!! We spent Halloween weekend here," states Kasey M. Amenities include "indoor and outdoor pools. Nice playground. We were down by the river and had a lot of room on our site," according to Leanne B.
Proximity to urban attractions: Most campgrounds in the region provide convenient access to major cities. Military Park United States Naval Academy is "cheap and close to Annapolis," while Ben Franklin RV Park offers "good location to head into the Amish country, Harrisburg, Hershey and/or Gettysburg. We also drove out to Baltimore one day during our stay," notes a reviewer.
What you should know
Site spacing varies widely: Site dimensions and privacy differ significantly between campgrounds. At Round Top Campground, "sites are small and tight and some are at strange angles," while at Bar Harbor RV Park, "sites are close but there were all sizes of RVs there, even large class A."
Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds close during winter months. Thousand Trails Circle M operates "April 7 to November 26," while Drummer Boy Camping Resort runs "Apr 1 to Oct 31." However, Ben Franklin RV Park remains open year-round.
Weekend crowds: Several campgrounds become significantly busier on weekends. At Round Top Campground, one camper noted it was "quiet during the week, weekends quite busy," while another mentioned that Circle M "gets very full on the weekends."
Tips for camping with families
Look for campgrounds with dedicated children's activities: Drummer Boy Camping Resort offers structured entertainment programs. "A yard sale, vendor sale, golf cart parade, as well as other activities going on. The campground offers free mini golf, a pool and a splash pad pool area," reports Laure D.
Consider proximity to playgrounds: When selecting a site, check playground locations. At Gettysburg Campground, campers note "tons of things for them to do. We were in tent sites which felt bigger than most and were right by river. Not far to go anywhere walking." However, Round Top received criticism as "there was only 1 playground, it was all the way at the front of the campground (we had to drive to it) and it was very junky and run down."
Ask about pet policies: Rules vary significantly between locations. At Camp Meade RV Park, pets are allowed throughout the grounds, while Bar Harbor maintains designated areas but "the campground seemed to stress pet restrictions both in the rules section of their registration packet and signage around the grounds."
Tips from RVers
Check site dimensions carefully: Many campgrounds have tight spacing between RV sites. Ben Franklin RV Park has "super tight [sites] with no landscaping etc. We had to be careful to ensure our slide outs wouldn't hit the electric boxes," reports one RVer.
Navigation considerations: Several campgrounds require careful driving in larger motorhomes. As one reviewer mentioned, "You have to drive through a residential neighborhood to reach Bar Harbor, so big rigs take care/caution."
Winter preparation: For late fall or early spring camping, be prepared for freezing temperatures. At Bar Harbor RV Park, campers "were told to turn off and unhook water the night it dropped below freezing." Many sites offer 50-amp service but wintertime water access may be limited.
