    Sherwood Forest RV Resort

    Megalopolis RV Circus

Allow me to begin by saying I have never been to a large RV campground… ever! This place is so huge that you won’t be surprised if you get lost in this place at least a couple of times before you find your slotted RV destination for the night. Also, I was amazed by how close to the concrete jungle you are at this place, but once you turn on the winding little lane that will bring you to this megalopolis RV circus – fitting given your proximity to all of themed amusement parks! – after crossing through the entry gates, you immediately lose sight of all the traffic, noise and business as you are swallowed up by the lush verdant trees of pines, palms and Ancient oaks.

As for the campground itself, you’ll enter off the very busy 192 and head south on Scott Boulevard, where you’ll pass 3 intersecting lanes before arriving to Sherwood Forest RV Resort. There will be plenty of signage, so you shouldn’t get lost arriving here – it's another story once inside this massive compound. To navigate yourself to the proper location you have been assigned of the 514 potential overnight possibilities that exist, you’ll first want to stop off at the administration building, where they should give you a map – and if they don’t, be sure to ask for you, because you’re going to need it! Basically, this entire place is back-to-back RV’s parked at a diagonal with very little to no privacy whatsoever and given that Sherwood Forest is so heavily populated, you are going to encounter both a decent amount of traffic (the golf cart kind) and noise. And while I would normally encourage folks to get as close to the pool area as possible, I found this main congregating place to be quite jam packed and noisy.

Amenities: Clubhouse / lounge, mini-golf, basketball, dog park, RV storage, restroom / shower facilities, horseshoe pit, WiFi (at a cost away from the main building), shuffleboard, darts, fitness center, in-ground heated swimming pool, nearby Tiki bar, LP gas refill station, laundr-O-mat, ballroom, mail room, library, banquet hall, catch-and-release lake fishing, marketplace store, playground, game room, billiards, whirlpool / spa / hot tub, picnic tables, pavilion areas, fire pits, BBQ grill, designated trash receptacles, trash compactor, cable TV / satellite and back-in / pull-through sites with full hook-ups (30/ 50 amp electric, water and sewage). In addition to all of the amenities, there’s also a ton of activities, including live music concerts, potluck dinners, BBQ cookouts, dance lessons, ice cream socials, craft-making classes, outdoor chess, mini-golf tournaments, church services, aerobic dancing, exercise classes, line dancing (yeehaw!), board game nights, Bingo, card playing as well as formal holiday dinners around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Insider’s tips? Here’s a few: (1) The best sites, in general, are all of the ones that are completely on the perimeter of Sherwood Forest RV Resort, specifically sites #1– 137 (you will note that there are a handful of cottages and cabins for rent in these slots as well); (2) When you get done staring down the inside of your cooler or mini-fridge and are looking for a place to sit down and eat for a change, then there are no shortage of food joints to have a look at, including: Krispy Kreme (my personal favorite), Cracker Barrel (my personal least favorite restaurant in the universe), Longhorn Steakhouse, Ichiban Buffet, Martin’s BBQ, Olive Garden and 192 Crab & Lobster Juicy Seafood & Bar;(3) If by chance you have forgotten anything, avoid paying double or triple the price at the on-site market by going to either Walmart or Publix, which are both about a mile and half away; and (4) If you would actually like to enjoy a bit of the outdoors while staying at this RV amusement park, go for a day trip to Lake Tohopekaliga, which has some pretty amazing bass fishing as well as a few choice places to drop your boat into, like Twin Oaks or Cherokee Point Conservation Areas (and if you don’t have your own kayak, canoe or boat, contact Wild Willys Airboat Tours and they’ll show you around).

    Happy Camping!

    Plantation Oaks

    Basic mobile home/RV park

We stayed there during the Tampa Show. Last minute decision. Park has a lot of long term RV's and many of them older. Dog friendly and has a decent sized dog run. We had a pull thru spot that was plenty long enough to leave our dolly hooked up to our 33' class A, and still have plenty of room to park in front. Although it was very narrow and I was a little concerned about my leveling jacks sinking in when it rained due to it being all grass. Fortunately it didn't rain much. There were cable hook ups, but I couldn't get a signal. Not sure about wifi, because I just used my hot spot. Most, if not all, of the short term spaces had picknick tables. Overall just a fairly quiet place to park with hookups and not too far off the highway.

Camp Margaritaville RV Resort and Cabana Cabins Auburndale

    Just okay

First, this is a really nice RV campground. It's new and has some nice amenities. That being said, I don't think full timers like us are their audience. Pros- nice big pull through sites, nice dog park, food trucks on weekend nights(at least while we were there), and a bar on site. Cons- it's very loud, not really close to any attractions, wifi was fast but frequently went out, highway noise, incessant loud construction noise every single weekday, you have to wear these bright green hospital type bracelets on the property, they charge$10 a visitor even if they are just going to your campsite to hang out and not use the amenities, they say they are family friendly but are okay with offensive political flags being flown. They played loud country music during the day most of the weekdays we were there. One day they started before 9 am. On Friday night, the music from the tiki bar area was so loud that we couldn't hear the movie we were trying to watch in our trailer with the windows up. It was the same the next night with a live band. I think this place is nice if you are looking for a place to party on the weekend, but not a relaxing resort like they advertise. For the price I paid I expect to not have construction noise every day. We likely won't be back. We camped at Cabana Club RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Palmetto Ridge Campground — Myakka River State Park

    Enormous park

I’m staying in the Palmetto Ridge loop which is the only paved loop & I think the only one w/sewer. The Big Flats & Old Prairie loops are gravel road, tight, no privacy & very small sites like for popups, vans or small campers. The Palmetto Ridge pull thrus are gigantic. I would say the vegetation gives semi privacy but they aren’t on top of each other so it’s not like you’re looking right at your neighbor. There is a picnic table & a fire ring. Gravel sites but pretty level. My site was 50 amp. Not sure how many are. Bath house & laundry facility appears clean. Pet friendly. The outpost is literally like 3 miles into the park down from the entrance & Palmetto loop. The store was nice & there was a food truck. It was a little spendy but good food. The river was low so the kayak rental & boat tours were shut down. Tons of great hiking & even some elevated bridges for site seeing. Tons of gators, birds, deer etc. There is also a scenic drive in the park, a “fisherman’s loop” & a few picnic areas. There are cabins to rent but I didn’t see them. Also never saw a playground if you have kids. Very dark & quiet at night.

    Horseshoe Cove RV Resort

    Great short or long stay

I live local and have been staying here in the pull through area a month until I transition to 100% travel trailer life. I have 2 50 lb+ dogs and there are many other people with dogs, plus a dog park. Park is very well kept, beautiful gym, pool, hot tub, and private island on backside to fish and other games like horseshoes. Love this place! Maintenance is A M A Z I N G!!!!!!!! I will be staying here again for short and extended periods and feel more than comfortable to recommend to friends and family. Laundry facilities and bathrooms are fine too. Dryers dry a full load of towels in one cycle, was pretty impressive! Also plenty of area to ride a bike a couple times around the park. It is also close to gas, grocery store and really good restaurants. Two thumbs up!!!

    Hickory Point RV Park

Nice, quiet, well maintained, friendly, wooded CG on the water

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 132 for 3 days in mid April. The CG is very clean, well maintained, but relatively expensive. The CG is a mixture of long-term and transient folks. The roads are paved, but the sites are sandy, shelly gravel. The staff is friendly and very helpful. They have beach chairs near the water and a fire pit that they lit every evening near sunset. In addition to the Bark Park area, there is a nice wooded area where you can walk your dog as well.

AT&T coverage was pretty good, with 3-4 bars of 5G service and speeds up to 11 MB/s. The CG has a lot of trees, but the sites in the front of the park are pretty open. We had no line-of-site to the DISH satellites, but did have an open view north, so Starlink usable, but the CG had WiFi and we were right across from the antenna, so we didn’t use Starlink. The CG WiFi achieved speeds up to 8 MB/s.

    Colt Creek State Park Campground

    Very Nice Campground

This campground is obviously quite new.  Spacious and open sites that are very big rig friendly.  Pads are L-shaped to accommodate the picnic table, yet because of the spacioiusness there's room to pitch a screen tent in the grass.

The demerits for us were (1) laundry is coin op only (no credit card), surprising for such a new park; and (2) no plastic bag dispenseries for dog clean up.  Such amenities are nice for extended stays.

    Edward Medard Park

    Gem of the County

What a beautiful well kept facility near suburbia. Just a short drive from Tampa and Lakeland areas this first come first served facility is a favorite of locals. Full service for RV's (even a dump station. Clean, monitored bathroom facilities close to lots of additional activities! Kayaking and fishing on the lake is a blast! Frisbee Golf (this is an advanced course) equestrian and hiking trails, picnic and playground areas. Pet friendly but there were more than a few stray cats when we were there (a problem the rangers are trying to address). Midweek is best time to visit as weekends fill fast (usually by Thursday night)

    Myakka River RV Resort

    Low Key Campground

We stayed here for a week and overall it’s a solid, no frills place to stay. Level & compact sites with concrete patio pads. Our site backed right up to the marsh, which had a lot of birds & wildlife. There’s a pool, laundry, fenced dog area, and WiFi (for an extra fee). Verizon cell service was solid & always had connection. Mostly long term residents here but they are really friendly & helpful.

Guide to Ruskin

RV camping options near Ruskin, Florida provide direct access to Tampa Bay's waterfront activities while maintaining proximity to nearby cities like Bradenton and Tampa. Located along Florida's Gulf Coast with average temperatures ranging from 65-90°F year-round, the area features both freshwater and saltwater recreation opportunities. Most RV parks in the region stay open all year, with higher occupancy during winter months when snowbirds migrate south.

What to do

Kayaking at River Vista RV Park: River Vista offers kayak rentals ($15/hour for a single kayak) with access to Frog Creek, which flows through natural Florida wetlands. "The creek was gorgeous & easy to float. Wish we would have done that float daily," reports one visitor who enjoyed the peaceful waterway.

Explore nearby beaches: Many campers use Ruskin as a base for beach trips. From Pleasant Lake RV Resort, "This place is 20 minutes away from several beaches and the TB Rays stadium, the Trop," notes Keith F., highlighting the convenient location for coastal activities and sports events.

Visit Tampa attractions: The central location makes city attractions accessible. "Very close to beaches, Anna Marie Island, Sarasota, and Tampa," writes one visitor to Winter Quarters Manatee, making it ideal for day trips to urban destinations while maintaining a camping home base.

What campers like

Well-maintained facilities: Many campgrounds feature clean, updated facilities that receive positive feedback. At Frog Creek RV Resort & Campground, one camper appreciated that "the shower house is updated & pristine" and mentioned the "very well maintained" grounds.

Pool amenities: Swimming pools are a popular feature during hot Florida days. "They have a nice pool and laundry facilities," notes a guest at Encore Terra Ceia, adding that the "pet-friendly" environment makes it suitable for travelers with animals.

Water views: Several parks offer scenic water views that enhance the camping experience. "We have a view of the pond with ducks," mentions a Terra Ceia visitor, while another camper at River Vista enjoyed the "Spanish moss hanging in the trees" along the creek.

What you should know

Site spacing varies significantly: Expect different site configurations based on the park. At Tampa South RV Resort, one reviewer mentioned, "We looked like Austin Powers trying to get into our pull through site... Had to have neighbors to left and right and across the street move cars and patio furniture just so we could squeeze by."

Highway noise can be an issue: Several rv parks in Ruskin, Florida and surrounding areas experience traffic noise due to their proximity to major roadways. "The noise from the interstate is non-stop, and traffic in this area is really congested," reported one visitor to Winter Quarters Manatee.

Seasonal population fluctuations: During winter months, parks fill quickly with long-term residents. "Many RVs there for the season, some which appear annual, and full timers," observed a camper at Frog Creek, reflecting the typical demographic of Florida RV parks during peak season.

Tips for camping with families

Look for parks with activities: Some parks offer family-friendly amenities that keep children entertained. "There is a lovely pool, billiard room, exercise and game room, etc.," notes a visitor to Pleasant Lake RV Resort, providing options for different age groups.

Consider security features: Lazydays RV Resort gets positive mentions for safety measures. "Security at night was friendly and helped us feel safe," wrote one camper, though others noted varied experiences with different parks' security protocols.

Bug protection is essential: Florida's climate supports mosquito populations, particularly near water. "This is a mosquito heaven!!! Bring bug spray or candles! You will see a large amount of bugs in your area," warns a visitor about outdoor conditions at one local campground.

Tips from RVers

Reserve well in advance for winter stays: Ruskin area RV parks fill quickly during peak season. For campers needing specific accommodations, early booking is crucial, especially for larger rigs requiring spacious sites.

Check internet connectivity needs: WiFi quality varies widely between campgrounds. "We did not have any luck getting wifi, but we have a Verizon Hotspot, and only one bar," reported a Pleasant Lake visitor, suggesting that bringing your own connectivity solution may be necessary.

Site navigation challenges: Many rv campgrounds near Ruskin, Florida have tight turns that require careful maneuvering. "Be careful entering the park. Very sharp turns," cautions one RVer about Encore Vacation Village, highlighting a common concern for those with larger rigs.
