Fort De Soto Campground sits on a peninsula approximately 15 miles south of Belleair Bluffs, with sites spread across three separate camping loops. The campground features waterfront sites on Tampa Bay with direct water access for kayaking and fishing. Winter temperatures typically range from 55-75°F, making it popular with seasonal campers seeking warmer winter weather.
What to do
Kayak through mangrove trails: At Fort De Soto Campground, visitors can explore the natural waterways surrounding the campground. "Ft Desoto is hands-down the go-to spot in my local area. The beaches are gorgeous, there are plenty of secret trails, a dog beach, general store, historic walks, boat ramps, kayak access, and much more," shares Alyssa D.
Visit historic sites: The historic fort at Caladesi Island State Park provides educational opportunities about the area's coastal military history. "It's a beautiful Island. One of the last undeveloped barrier islands in Florida. It's around 650 acres with tons of boardwalks and hiking," notes Robert C.
Cycling opportunities: The Pinellas County Trail runs alongside multiple campgrounds in the area. "The Pinellas bike trail is right behind the park and has beautiful scenery. There are so many good restaurants close by to try as well," writes Gina D. from Caladesi RV Park.
What campers like
Waterfront sites: Many campers appreciate direct water access at Bay Bayou RV Resort. "Right on the bayou with a kayak launch and docks for fishing and relaxing. We like it so much that we made it our home base for our travels," explains Mary G.
Clean facilities: Cleanliness ranks high in importance for campers visiting pet friendly campgrounds near Belleair Bluffs. "Bathhouse very clean and nicely done. Doggie playground nice. They are still updating many of the sites but it is very nicely landscaped and clean. Workers very friendly and helpful. Pool was excellent," reports Nancy I. about Clearwater-Lake Tarpon KOA.
Wildlife viewing: The natural setting provides opportunities to observe local wildlife. "We were greeted by dolphins, sting rays and manatees," notes one camper at Fort De Soto Campground. Another visitor comments, "Great park with days worth of activities! The historic fort, scenic beaches, trails for hiking or biking, etc made for a great visit! Tons of wildlife - we saw raccoons, dolphin, manatee, tons of tons of Birds!"
What you should know
Age restrictions apply: Some parks limit the age of RVs they accept. At Scottish Traveler RV Park, "When we called to reserve a last minute site, they told us our camper had to be 10 years old or newer. Ours is 20 years old but in great shape. They asked for photos, once I sent them, they let us book a site."
Seasonal timing affects availability: Winter is peak season for the area, with many snowbirds occupying sites for extended periods. "We come down for a week in the summer to various places in FL and after a great experience last year, we gave this one a try again," notes a reviewer at Caladesi RV Park.
Limited pet amenities: While many parks are pet friendly, amenities vary. At Avalon RV Resort, the "dog 'park' was a tiny walking area," according to one camper. Another notes, "Sites were small, Service was friendly, Okay amenities."
Tips for camping with families
Consider site spacing: Family groups need adequate space. "Sites are spaced out far from each other which was great! I have travelled to a lot of parks That have sites right on top of one another. I was pleasantly surprised to have additional space from my neighboring travelers," explains Diana M. about Caladesi RV Park.
Look for kid-friendly activities: Some parks offer more for children than others. "There is a playground with good swings and also a sturdy playground that offered plenty of opportunity for my four year old to blow off some steam. The ground is all recycled rubber, which I love as a parent," mentions a Fort De Soto Campground visitor.
Check beach proximity: Multiple beaches offer varying experiences for families. "Warm water with not too many waves, so children can play in the water in the summer and cool water in the winter. Great sunsets. Near by restaurants and plenty of little cities to explore within 20 miles," notes Nancymike K. about Caladesi Island State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling requirements: Many RVers note that site conditions vary across campgrounds in the Belleair Bluffs area. "Decent size spot with stone drive and cement patio," reports Kevin about Caladesi RV Park.
Limited space between units: Be prepared for tight quarters at some parks. "This park is super clean, the landscaping is well maintained. There's a place to fish, a place to chill on the dock and not fish, trees are everywhere and lots of random wildlife roaming around," shares Mike W. about Bay Bayou RV Resort.
Advance planning essential: Popular sites fill quickly, especially waterfront locations. "Cant go wrong with a waterfront stay. Book in advanced, especially if you want to stay more than a night or two," advises Taylor T. about Fort De Soto Campground.
