Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Tabernash, CO

St. Louis Creek Campground offers spacious sites for pets and their owners, with clean pit toilets and maintained trails directly accessible from the camping area. Pets must be leashed throughout the campground, and many sites feature bear boxes for secure food storage. The campground provides drinking water and trash facilities, making it convenient for campers with animals. Vasquez Ridge Dispersed Camping area also welcomes pets, though it lacks facilities like toilets or water sources. Both locations accommodate tent and RV camping, with St. Louis Creek providing picnic tables and established fire rings with grates. Sites at St. Louis Creek are well-separated, providing adequate space between campers despite the area having limited shade due to previous beetle kill.

Dog-friendly trails leave directly from St. Louis Creek Campground, including access to mountain biking paths and the creek itself, which runs adjacent to the camping area with good trout fishing opportunities. Dogs should remain leashed on trails due to occasional wildlife sightings, including bears reported on Dead Horse Trail approximately one mile from camp. The campground's proximity to Fraser and Winter Park (about 15 minutes away) allows pet owners to easily access pet supplies or veterinary services if needed. Both locations experience significant mosquito activity during summer months, particularly near water sources. St. Louis Creek Campground operates seasonally from May through October, with temperatures dropping significantly at night due to the high elevation.

    Spruce Lake RV Park

    Great location for RMNL

The selling point of this campground is location. It’s as close to Rocky Mountain National Park as you can get without actually camping on NPS property. You are completely surrounded by the mountains and the views are amazing. There’s a beautiful river flowing nearby. Easy access to Estes Park. I biked into downtown and back easily. Close to a great little market and several restaurants. Sites are very tight with no privacy unless you are along the edges of the park. Nice laundry facilities, mini golf, and a small pond. There’s a small dog park but I’d recommend taking your dog to the city’s dog park about 10 minutes away. It’s worth the drive and your dog can go swimming on a beach.

Primitive Sites — State Forest State Park

    Dispersed Camping at American Lakes

This is one of my all-time favorite places to hike and camp in Colorado. I have not yet stayed in any of the campgrounds but have backpacked to the top of the American Lakes Trail. Not only is this hike fantasticly beautiful and full of wildlife (tons of moose especially) but there is great dispersed camping along the trails. You simply cannot find more scenic and free camping in Colorado. I would highly recommended camping anywhere in State Forest State Park!

Also, there are quite a few huts, cabins and yurts that can be rented year round in SFSP!

    Great stay

Took the kids camping in Colorado for the first time and we had a blast. It rained on us a lot but it didn't stop us. Took a great hike up deer mountain....stunning views. Can't wait to go back.

    Riverview RV Park & Campground

    Riverside Camping

We had a great time at this campground. We spent 4 days in a spot right next to the river. Close to Rocky Mountain National Park. Really enjoyed the river, dog park, live music on sat. night and laundry.

    Denver West-Central City KOA

    Beautiful view

Gorgeous views, relaxing and very kind, courteous staff. Dog park, hot tubs, laundry, all you can eat pancakes (very reasonably priced) well worth the so steep drive on way up to 9,000 ft.

    Riverview RV Park & Campground

Great option outside Rocky Mt NP

Good Sam’s RV park with full amenities. We booked a water/electric online, but got bumped up to full hookups. Beautiful river going beside many of the sites. Newer bathrooms. Huge park with playground for kids. Our site was very wide and open, but we might just have been lucky. Most are tree covered sites and not packed in. Dog park. About 45 minute beautiful drive to Rocky Mountain National Park entrance.

    Dakota Ridge RV Park

    Not dog friendly

Portable dog pens are not allowed. Tethering is not allowed. We don’t like tethering and our rv is small so we travel with some wire folding dog fence so that our dogs can hop in and out of the rv when the weather is good. At this park they can only be on a 6 ft leash attached to a human. They have a dog “area” instead of a fenced dog park where they can play a little. The area for dogs is awful, I’ll include a picture.

    Winding River Resort

We loved it and already plan to return

A lovely wooded campground literally on the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park - we even saw moose from the back window of our RV!  Options for everyone from cabins, to FHU RV sites (limited and not the ideal locations, but still nice), water/electric sites and tenting areas.  Even Conestoga wagons!  There is horseback riding on site and we loved watching the horses run in and out each morning/evening and you just have to cross the road for a pretty hike along the Colorado River in RMNP (no dogs on the trails).  We camped with our Great Dane - very dog friendly with bag stations around the park.  Friendly and helpful staff, a small shop with supplies and souvenirs, a cute little petting zoo with goats, sheep, and pigs.

    Gore Creek Campground

So good, I don’t want to tell you about it.

Gore Creek Campground is a true gem of the National Forest Service. If you are looking for a great boondocking location that is close to great trails and breathtaking views, this just might be the place for you. The entrance to the campground is ~2 miles off of I-70 Exit 180 on Bighorn Road. Only 10 minutes from Vail Village and 25 minutes from Frisco.

We stayed in Site #8, which provided plenty of room for our 22’ travel trailer and pickup. The sites each have a large picnic table and fire ring.

Pit toilets are spread through the campground and were very clean and well maintained. The campground hosts do a great job of keeping everything tidy and looking great. They also have bundles of firewood for sale for $7 at their site just inside the entrance to the campground.

I can’t say enough about this place. It’s probably my favorite spot to camp in Colorado. I almost didn’t post this review for fear of the secret getting out.

Guide to Tabernash

Dispersed camping options around Tabernash provide access to the high-altitude forests of the Arapaho National Forest. Most sites sit between 8,500-9,500 feet elevation, creating cool nights even during summer months with temperatures frequently dropping below 45°F after sunset. Fall camping season typically ends by mid-October when overnight temperatures regularly dip below freezing.

What to do

**Fishing opportunities: Creek-side camping at Vasquez Ridge offers easy access to trout fishing. "The site was right next to the creek, which is great for dogs to play in, but meant a lot of mosquitos. Definitely bring bug spray," notes Jamie B.

**Mountain biking: The Continental Divide trails are accessible from St. Louis Creek Campground, which connects to extensive trail networks. "Located just outside Fraser, CO. Easy to get to but far enough away to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Tons of hiking and biking right from camp," explains Ryan N.

**Wildlife viewing: Early mornings at lakeside camping spots provide moose viewing opportunities. At Arapaho Bay Campground, one camper reports: "We had many moose sightings in the campground during our stay. Kayaking and swimming in Lake Grandby and hiking nearby areas was a lot of fun."

What campers like

**Natural water sounds: Dispersed sites along creeks provide natural white noise for sleeping. At Vasquez Ridge, Parker B. mentions: "So many dispersed sites up here, runs right along the creek which is lovely to fall asleep to."

**Lake access: Stillwater Campground offers direct access to Shadow Mountain Lake. "This park has a LOVELY location right on the lake; try and pay attention when you are booking to get a really good spot," suggests Katie H.

**Primitive feeling with nearby conveniences: Campers appreciate the balance of remote camping with town access. One reviewer noted about Vasquez Ridge: "This place has a good backcountry feel to it, with the convenience of being close enough to your car and to Winter Park if you forget to pack something."

What you should know

**Road conditions: Many dispersed sites require high-clearance vehicles. At Fall River Reservoir, a camper warns: "Be warned, this road is no joke. We did see a few brave drivers in Subaru's, but most campers had high clearance 4x4 vehicles."

**Cell service limitations: Reception varies significantly between campgrounds. At Chinns Lake, Chad C. reports: "I have AT&T and had zero cell reception, some of the others had Verizon which had limited cell service."

**Early arrival recommended: Popular sites fill quickly, especially on weekends. "We arrived around 2pm on Friday and the road was closed to get into the actual campground. We found a spot right off of Vasquez Road down near the brook that was perfect," shares Danielle H.

**Bear awareness: Food storage protocols are essential. St. Louis Creek campers should note: "I did see a bear while hiking on dead horse trail (about 1 mile from the camp). It crossed my path in a hurry so I froze. All went well."

Tips for camping with families

**Kid-friendly activities: Some campgrounds provide organized recreation. At Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain, one family enjoyed: "Kids enjoyed activities - popsicle eating contest, t-shirt tie dye, and donut decorating. They also loved the clean and well-lit basketball courts."

**Protected swimming areas: Lake access varies between dog-friendly campgrounds near Tabernash. "Beautiful setting. Lake view. Mountain View. Good time," notes a reviewer at Arapaho Bay Campground.

**Spacing between sites: Consider campground layout when traveling with children. One camper at St. Louis Creek observed: "Each campsite is very spacious. There's a nice hiking trail and the owners are very very friendly."

**Weather preparation: Dramatic temperature swings require layered clothing. Nights at high elevations can drop below 40°F even in summer, with afternoon thunderstorms common between 2-5pm.

Tips from RVers

**Hookup availability: Most national forest campgrounds lack full hookups. At Stillwater Campground, a camper noted: "Location is very nice right on the lake with beautiful views level rv spots for the most part."

**Campground access: RV-friendly dog campgrounds often have specific restrictions. Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountain gets positive reviews for layout: "For a pull through it was only $67+tax per night...Big sites, big fire pits, clean facilities."

**Dump station locations: Plan services strategically when camping near Tabernash. "Water Dump was not available and some toilets were closed. It has a great view of the lake from some spots, however, you can hear the road during night," warns an RVer at Stillwater Campground.
