Best RV Parks & Resorts near Poncha Springs, CO

Multiple RV parks and resorts surround Poncha Springs in the Arkansas River Valley. Monarch Spur RV Park provides 43 full-hookup sites with 30/50-amp service, operating from May through November. The park includes picnic tables, showers, and dump station access. "Sites were incredibly long but a bit skinny but did the trick. You can hear the river running almost everywhere in the park," noted one visitor. Salida RV Resort features level, spacious sites with 30/50-amp electrical connections and water hookups. Wilderness Expeditions RV Park accommodates big rigs and offers creek-side spots with electric and water connections, though its sites may be close together. Valley Mobile RV Park in Buena Vista includes pull-through options for larger motorhomes with full hookups and trash service.

Several RV parks require advance reservations, particularly during summer months and fall leaf-peeping season. Cell service varies between properties, with stronger connections at parks closer to highways. RV dump stations are available at Monarch Spur and Valley Mobile parks, with an additional public dump station at the Poncha Springs Visitor Center at the Highway 285/50 junction. Most parks accommodate pets, though some have restrictions. Riverside RV Park offers riverside sites that may require careful maneuvering—one camper noted that "it took a couple of tries to back our 20 foot travel trailer into the spot" due to parallel positioning to the river.

Ruby Mountain Campground — Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area

Well maintained and close to BV

My family stayed here last summer and we’re not disappointed. The lack of shade (upper spaces) and not a lot of choices for big-rigs are the only downsides here. Here are the positives:

    • Great access to the Arkansas River (fishing, put-in/ - take/out access)
    • Very well-maintained spaces and clean bathrooms
    • Minutes from rafting outfitters (we always go through Noah’s Ark. Great customer service and experienced guides)
    • Close to Buena Vista
    • Family friendly area with lots of access to public trails around Ruby Mountain

    Enjoy!

    One Mile

    Nice riverfront campground

Big Rig friendly. 30 amp service. Good cell service on Verizon. Some highway noise but the river just on the otherside makes it an enjoyable place to camp. Clean bathrooms.

Mountain Time RV Park & Cabins (Formerly Tall Texan)

Easily accessible RV park near Gunnison, CO

They have a great staff that is friendly and always accessible! We have a back-in site but they have pull throughs also. There is a playground for the kids, laundry, and bathrooms with showers. They allow fires and provide a “fire pit” that is constructed from an old washer tub with legs welded on. Just ask for one at the front desk. They also sell firewood for the fire. Oh, and they come by and pick up your trash at your site between 9-5 each day just leave your bag out by the road. There are full hookups at most of the sites. The area is in walking distance of the Gunnison River and there is a nice hiking trail on the south side of the river heading west. There is also a bike path that goes back into town and up the road toward Crested Butte. On the main road (intersection of CR11 and highway 135) there is a bus stop for a free bus trip into Gunnison. The men’s bathroom had a couple of issues, the overhead light didn’t work very well and one of the toilets was malfunctioning but they got those fixed pretty quickly. There is a nice combination of shade (from the trees) and sun at all the sites.

    Three Rivers Resort & Outfitting

Great location with easy access fishing

Great location with full hookups for RVs. The description mentions back-in sites only, and while our electric hookup was conveniently on the same side, we had to run our water and sewage lines underneath the RV since those hookups were on the opposite side—this seems to be the case for all sites. The campground is perfectly situated at the intersection of the Gunnison, Taylor, and East Rivers, making it ideal for fly fishing. They offer cabins, RV sites, and long-term housing options. There's a small store with basic items, beer, and merchandise, plus a fly shop in the same building. There's also a restaurant, though it was closed during our stay, and coin-operated laundry facilities. Overall, a great stay!

    Salida RV Resort

Very nice new RV park. Right on the Arkansas River, great mountain views.

Very clean, large level spots with gravel and plenty of room in between RVs.  Great location, close to Salida and hiking & biking trails.  Directly on the Arkansas River -- river view spots are very nice and all spots have a view of the mountains, there's a bit of road noise from nearby highway.  Friendly staff, nice clubhouse with showers, pool table & fitness center, there's a small dog park and pickleball courts.  Direct access to Arkansas River for kayaks and small boats (walk down to river, can't drive there).  Campground internet was spotty but cell service is great so internet is very good if you have a hot spot.  Highly recommended, my only complaint is there's no pool or hot tub.

Chalk Creek Campground & RV Park

Very clean and well set up campground

The owners and workers are very polite and helpful. The grounds are very clean and well kept. We stayed at the RV site in the lower campground right on the creek. Beautiful setting with fire pit, 30 amp hookup and picnic table. Very level ground. Firewood and modest amenities available at the office. Water is available to fill water reserve tank on RV and also a dump station on site. Beautiful mountain options on both sides. St Elmo, Mount Princeton, and Chalk Lake are a short drive with amazing views. Bath house is super clean - coin operated showers but lots of room, outlets near counter and sink area and clean bathroom stalls. Laundry facility is also located at the end of the bathhouse on the upper campground. Upper campground has very few trees. Lower campground is near creek and has beautiful trees to shade.

    Great staff & Clean

Staff is accommodating and friendly, campground and facilities are clean, they are pet friendly. Have a club house, mail service, 24 clean efficient laundry room. Nothing allowed on their grass except the picnic table they provide, no shade tents, dog pens or mats we had a gravel area behind our site where we were allowed to put our dog pen, small foldable table with Our BBQ grill on it (they will allow BBQ grills on their picnic tables) and fire ring they provided for us.

    Raspberry Gulch Dispersed Site

    Beautiful views

It is gorgeous and so easy to access. From the 285 going north turn left on County road 270 until it becomes the 272 we went straight to the 274. At the cross of 2 National Forests, San Isabel and pike . We arrived around 5 pm on a Wednesday and most of the spots were taken but we were able to find one to fit our 40 feet toy hauler. We went for a hike, there were multiple hiking trails including access to the Colorado Trail. We also rode our mountain bikes on 272, 274A and the 273. It was very quiet and the sky was amazing at night. I highly recommend it if you are traveling on the 285.

Guide to Poncha Springs

The Arkansas River Valley camping area near Poncha Springs sits at elevations above 8,000 feet, creating cool to cold nights even during summer months. RV accommodations in this region provide excellent access to outdoor recreation including rafting, fishing, and hiking the nearby Colorado Trail. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from May through October due to winter weather conditions.

What to do

Fish the Arkansas River: At Bighorn Park, campers can access the Arkansas River directly from their sites. "We have an Outlaw toy hauler so we're so lucky to get a back-in spot overlooking the river. Slept with the back open and fell asleep to the river sounds," reports one visitor.

Explore mountain biking trails: Salida RV Resort provides convenient access to nearby trail systems. "Perfect spot for access to Methodist Trail system, downtown and easy bike ride away. Grounds were immaculate, sites perfectly level and raked after each guest," notes a mountain biking enthusiast.

Hike the Colorado Trail: Located just a mile from the Colorado Trail, Monarch Spur RV Park & Campground serves as a convenient base camp for hikers. "Stayed here while thru hiking the colorado trail, what a wonderful time! Salida is a quick drive away and the trail is only a mile up the road," mentions a hiker.

What campers like

High elevation cooling: Summer temperatures in this area remain moderate due to the 8,000+ foot elevation. "High altitude means cool to cold nights. Gorgeous area and park!" explains a camper at Monarch Spur RV Park.

River sounds: Many campsites feature riverside locations with natural sound benefits. At Wilderness Expeditions RV Park, "You can still hear the main road at times, but we have great wifi connection with our set up and are close to town with all the conveniences."

Wildlife viewing: The area offers opportunities to spot local wildlife. "And we even saw a moose. The stars are amazing here BTW," reports a visitor at Monarch Spur RV Park, where the dark mountain skies provide excellent stargazing conditions.

Camp amenities: Some rv campgrounds near Poncha Springs, Colorado feature additional recreational options. "They have a nice camp store, WiFi that works, golf cart rental, a playground, kids games, a community area (even host occasional concerts) fishing, and a river running through."

What you should know

Site spacing varies: Some RV parks have tighter spacing between sites. "It took a couple of tries to back our 20 foot travel trailer into the spot," notes a camper at Riverside RV Park, adding that sites are positioned parallel to the river.

Seasonal operation: Most rv campgrounds in Poncha Springs operate from May through October or early November. Mountain Time RV Park runs from May 1 to October 1, while Monarch Spur operates May 1 to November 1.

Limited tent camping: While most parks accommodate RVs, tent camping options are more limited. Wilderness Expeditions RV Park offers tent sites with pricing that varies based on amenities needed. "I stayed 2 nights in a rooftop tent while exploring the Salida and Buena Vista areas. Ran by really nice folks."

Bathroom access considerations: Some facilities require extra effort to reach. At Riverside RV Park, "the bathrooms and showers are clean but a bit worn, and they are across the river bridge from the campsites and up some fairly steep steps."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Some parks offer specific amenities for children. At Monarch Spur RV Park, "The kids didn't want to go anywhere they were happy just to hang out here at the campground."

Consider seasonal allergies: Watch for cottonwood seasons if allergies affect family members. "If anyone in your party has seasonal allergies of any kind I would steer clear of this park. The park is full of Cottonwood trees and over the 4th of July they were shedding their cotton and it was everywhere."

Waterfront safety: For riverside sites, plan appropriate supervision for children. "Great campground with over 20 back in against the river sites. Several great spots close to river sites with mature trees and good amenities."

Proximity to conveniences: Mt. Princeton RV Park & Cabins provides easy access to nearby towns. "We stayed here 5 nights Sun-Fri while doing work/school and enjoyed exploring Buena Vista in the evenings!"

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At Bighorn Park, riverside spots may require specific RV configurations. "Wow! Beautiful views! A river with cliffs on one side and mountain views on the other side. It is right on Hwy 50 which means easy access, but also lots of road noise."

Leveling preparations: Bring leveling blocks for some locations. "The sites were mostly level, though there was clearly a grade from the first site to the last, and there was a bit of grade front to back on our site."

Shower considerations: Some parks have pay showers or limited bathroom facilities. "Bathrooms were well kept. The showers were pay showers but we never used them. Laundry facilities were VERY nice and our clothes came out clean."

Internet connectivity: Cell service varies by location but is generally stronger at rv campgrounds in Poncha Springs closer to highways. "Wifi and Tmobile (3 bars of 5g) great. They sell propane here."
