Best RV Parks & Resorts near Placerville, CO

Several RV parks near Placerville accommodate motorhomes of various sizes with full hookup options. Ouray Riverside Resort provides pull-through RV pads with electric, water, and sewer connections, while 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park offers big rig friendly sites with 50-amp service. Red Mountain RV Park features both back-in and pull-through spots for larger motorhomes, though some sites position picnic tables quite close together. Riverbend RV Park & Cabins maintains level concrete pads suitable for Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels up to 40 feet. "Great park for larger RV's - we have a 40 ft toy hauler plus the added ramp patio with plenty of room. Park is very clean and quiet plus pet friendly."

Mountain elevation affects several aspects of RV camping in this region. Many parks close seasonally, typically operating from April through October, though Ouray Riverside Resort remains open year-round. Cell service varies significantly between locations, with stronger signals generally available at lower elevations. Dump stations are not universal - Riverbend and Centennial RV Parks provide on-site sanitary dumps, while others require using facilities in nearby towns like Montrose or Cortez. Winter RV camping requires careful planning as water systems shut down at higher elevations, though some parks maintain plowed access to pull-through sites during snow season. Most parks welcome pets but enforce leash requirements and designated pet areas.

    Mancos State Park Campground

    Great small lake

Mancos State Park has no-wake boating and is well-known for fishing, especially rainbow trout, a few brownies and yellow perch. There are 33 campsites on two sides of the lake, plus two all-season yurts. During the winter, it is a great place to use as a base for cross country skiing.

It is near the La Plata range to the east, and Mesa Verde National Park to the southwest. Durango is about 45 minutes to the east, and the City of Cortez about 25 minutes to the west. Telluride ski resort is about a two-hour drive. Both Cortez and Durango are full-service cities, with multiple supermarkets, other chains, etc. The town of Mancos, about a 12-minute drive from the park, has a full-service sit-down restaurant/bakery, a natural foods store, other restaurants, a community grocery store, shops, modern library and other amenities.

The park adjoins the San Juan National Forest, including multiple hiking trails, the Chicken Creek cross country ski area, the Sawtooth and Millwood trails, and other trails. The nearby forest (about a mile up the road) has dispersed camping as well as organized campgrounds accessible by a paved road.

There also is a dude ranch next to the park, and the approximate 1-mile trail around the park takes hikers over some beautiful scenery. There are no corrals, but horses are allowed on specific trails.

None of the campsites currently have water or electric hookups, but potable water is available at several connections on the east (main) side of the park. While there is no public WiFi, cell signals are strong.

    Lost Trail

Lovely site near the Rio Grande

Most sites are Park and walk into fire pit and table area. A few scattered back-in sites. No pull through. Nice wooden picnic tables, men and women’s bathrooms. Level tent sites, water pump on site but nothing available in October. No cell service. Loads of down wood for collection. Close to river access

South Rim Campground — Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

    Winter camping!

We stayed in the winter off season in Loop A, since it’s the only loop open. They plow Loop A and all pull through sites. There was no fee for the campsite, just the park entrance fee. There’s no power in this loop and there’s no water since it’s shut off in the winter. There are pit toilets which are pretty clean for pit toilets. There were a few campers but they were spread so far apart since everyone needed pull through sites cause it snowed a lot recently. Some places the snow is up to your thighs and some places it’s up to your waist.

Even without amenities, we were happy a campground was open in the Colorado winter.

[Internet. Verizon via iPhone has no signal. However, with our booster Nighthawk MR-1100 - 25 mbps down and 1 mbps up with 200 ping.]

    mcphee recreation complex

Nice Campground in need of some love

According to the campground host our site (16E) is one of the most desired sites.  The site has 30 amp electric service.  It is adjacent to flush toilets.  A few steps from the back of the site is a nice view of the reservoir.   The site offers ample space for a tent in addition to the back-in paved pad that accommodated our 32 ft truck/trailer combination.   A picnic table and fire ring is provided.  Numerous trees offer shade and privacy.

The roads and pads could use some maintenance.  At one time a nice dump station was provided but has since been abandoned.  We dumped at the Maverick's in Cortez.

    Ouray Riverside Resort

    Beautiful Ouray

Nestled in a valley with beautiful view next to Uncompahgre River with wonderful walking path. Gravel parking right off hwy 550. Laundry, showers, restaurant. Primitive cabins and fully equipped cabins. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to uptown shopping and eating & grocery store. Pull thru and back in sites. Overflow parking for extra vehicles for a charge. Down side-you have to trailer to trailheads for SXS riding. Most tail heads are small parking areas but the riding in the mountains is priceless. Been here twice, same site and would go again.

    Ouray KOA Holiday

    Quaint and quiet

Stayed at a small back-in site with 30 amp & electric in our camper van. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Loved that they had a store, laundry room, and firewood for sale. The store closes at 5:00 & we arrived at 5:10 but the office lady still checked us in and made sure we had firewood. The campground is well-maintained and clean.

    Little Molas Lake Campground

    Poplar picturesque site

6/28/22 - 7/12/22: This was a nice retreat for us. It is a very popular place on the weekend, but during the week it is much quieter. Most of the weekend traffic is heading to the trailhead for hiking or biking. There are 8 sites here, several large enough for my 34’ fifth-wheel trailer, one is a pull-through with two sites. Vault toilet, no water or dump station. There was 1-bar 5G Verizon, and 2-bars AT&T 4G that were both spotty; cloud cover between the lake and Silverton caused occational intermittent connectivity. Elevation is about 10,300 and posed a problem for our generator that caused severe spark-plug fouling. But, re-jetting the carburetor from a #61 to #58 solved the problem.

    Alpen Rose RV Park

Nice park, but not fond of the "big rig sites" A-B

Very nice campground overall and staff is very nice as well. Its only aboht 15 minutes from the Durango train, which was awesome, and has nice ammenities, though the cafe and pool are closed now (oct). Its a pretty expensive park...big rigs are regularly 79.00 and they did discount it 8.00 per night for off season, but all the big rig sites line up along the entrance/exit and people are arriving as late as 8pm which is really obnoxious when your eating dinner listening to rig after rig and car after car. Also, not all big rig sites are created equal. All are buddy sites, so you can face a friend, and all but ours (A-B) have a nice grass area...we have gravel and are closer to "our buddy" who we dont happen to know...the picnic tables are basically next to each other. We would come back, but would take a back in next time so we arent so close to the entrance.

The region experiences significant seasonal temperature variations with winter lows frequently reaching below freezing. Most campgrounds in the area follow a typical mountain camping season from May through September, though availability varies by elevation and weather conditions.

What to Do

Hiking access from camp: At 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park, the Ouray perimeter trail has an access point directly at the park. "This little place is on the outskirts of Ouray, tucked into the base of the mountain (perimeter trail actually has an access point at the park). Offers clean bathrooms, free showers, playground, and beautiful creek side camping," notes JJ V.

River activities: Priest Gulch Campground provides direct river access for fishing. "There is fishing in the park, free plentiful firewood-peaceful and quiet even though it is a busy place," shares Carl M. The river location creates unique recreational opportunities within walking distance of campsites.

Train watching: Some Placerville area campgrounds offer views of the historic Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. At Red Mountain Motel & RV Park, "The lower sites back right up to the rail road and you can watch the train roll by," according to Gene S. Train schedules vary seasonally, typically with daily service during summer months.

What Campers Like

Riverside camping: Riverbend RV Park receives consistent praise for its water features. "Such a peaceful campground during shoulder season. The river and pond are were very nice to sit by and observe nature. The Canada geese families were fun to watch," shares Mary F.

Mountain views: The surrounding San Juan Mountains create dramatic backdrops at most campgrounds. "Location is all I can Say. Every direction you look is beautiful, onsite restaurant is great, drinks are good, sites level," writes Chris A. about Ouray Riverside Resort.

Walking access to towns: Many campers appreciate proximity to nearby towns. At 4J + 1+ 1 RV Park, "This park is within walking distance of Ouray's most popular sight seeing. It's only a few blocks from breweries, restaurants, and just down the road from the town hot springs!" according to Morghan and Taylor D.

What You Should Know

Cell service reality: Connectivity varies significantly by campground and provider. At Alpen Rose RV Park, one reviewer noted specific performance metrics: "I was getting 30mbps on AT&T. 15 mins from Ridgeway and Montrose," writes Ben.

Reservation timing: Most campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. At Stoner RV Resort, "We placed a reservation online not knowing they weren't open yet due to a late snowfall," shares Mike M., highlighting the importance of calling directly for early or late season stays.

Site spacing considerations: Campsite density varies widely between parks. "The sites are pretty level for the most part, and spaced out nicely. The Durango Silverton train track is just across the road from the entrance," writes Ronald about Alpen Rose RV Park.

Tips for Camping with Families

Kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds offer dedicated spaces for children. "Large grassy area in the center for kids to play, pavilion with live music plus group fire pits to sit around in the large swing seating," notes MP C. about Stoner RV Resort.

Plus the office staff is friendly and welcoming, the bathrooms are clean and there are comfy chairs outside of the office to take in the views," reports Renee G.
