    Haggards RV Campground

    Easy access and quiet

My grandson and I stayed there in June for 4 days in a 34ft travel trailer in a pull thru long enough not to have to unhook. The sites were large and plenty of room for my slideout and not too close to next site. About 30 min from Pueblo and 30 from Canon City on Hwy 50 just east of Hwy 115 Full hookup and good WiFi Also had 30 OTA channels. Beautiful sunsets of the mountains Hwy 50 close by but traffic was not loud enough to disturb us Horses on the property as well as a swimming pool and very friendly staff Very nice experience and only 40 min from Colorado Springs or Royal Gorge.

    Diamond Campground & RV Park

Rustic campground with a great location.

This location was perfect for exploring the area. It is very close to downtown Woodland Park and many attractions. Deer wander through the campground throughout the day. It is rustic , with dirt/gravel roads and sites. Lots of pine trees and most spots are pull through. Some sites are a little close together but not all of them. Restrooms are clean. Small but nice laundry-room. Clean showers. A nice tent area. Staff was friendly and helpful. Try to get here before the office closes because finding your site may be difficult. It is a little hard to figure out the roads and the proper direction to go to fine your site and get into it.
We were here for 4th of July and there were NO activities. No pool. There is a small playground area and a small stage that has been abandoned. The dog park is at the very back of the property. Everything on our 50 amp site worked perfectly. The site was ample for our toy hauler and truck. Sites are not level, bring proper equipment for leveling. Overall, it has an awesome Colorado vibe and we liked it here. Only downside was layout of sites, no activities. You have to reserve a spot to wash clothes. This became a problem because people reserve large blocks of time and don’t show up. I couldn’t use laundry, so be forewarned.

    Royal Gorge-Canon City KOA

A perfectly adequate place to reload before your next adventure

This KOA journey has a friendly and helpful staff, and offers all of the bare essentials so you can get ready for your next stop. The campground is 8 miles from Cañon City and 4 miles from Royal Gorge.

Sites are a mix of dirt and gravel and as with much of the desert, you should expect it to be very dusty. Our site was very close to our neighbor and in combination with the high winds during our visit, we didn’t spend much time outside. Full hookups are conveniently located and offer water/sewer and 30/50amp service.

The campground has propane refills available on site. The staff was kind enough to let us drop off our tanks and they brought them back to us once someone was available to fill them. The laundry is open 24 hours. There are (4) washers and (4) dryers available at a cost of $2 per load. There is no change machine, so bring your own quarters or stop in the office and the staff can help you with exchanging some small bills.

    Mueller State Park Campground

    Absolutely Wonderful

This is less than thirty minutes from my house, but feels like a world away. Spots are close but private and paved pads make leveling easy. Most sites are pull through along the road and include electric. Back in sites are also available. The campground was full even with the snow and cold in early September. There are very few undesirable spots within the grounds, and the group sites are exceptional.

Vault and flush toilets are available at various locations through the campground, and there is a self-service dump station available at the front of the campground. We did run into the issue of people dumping buckets of waste in the dump station and not washing everything down, so look before you step.

Tent pads are large platforms filled with pea gravel, and include well maintained picnic tables and fire rings. The grounds and campsites are beautifully maintained and wonderful views of the surrounding mountains are plentiful.

Watch out for wildlife and be sure to read restrictions and rules on the maps provided at the gate - use and closures change seasonally.

East Ridge Campground in Royal Gorge

Incredible views! An excellent place to boondock

Cañon City deserves a lot of praise for this fantastic spot that provides a great opportunity to enjoy all the views that the Royal Gorge has to offer.

The campground is accessible via dirt roads via CR-3A. 4WD isn’t necessary to get there, but be prepared for some bumps. The city was working on some improvements to the campground when we stayed here including a new parking lot, new picnic pads for some of the sites, and the creation of some new sites near the bathroom.

There are currently (6) sites on the south loop which can accommodate travel trailers. Some are slightly larger but a few are only big enough for a class C or van. There are no hookups at the sites and no common water available. Each site has a picnic pad with table and a level, mulched area that could be used as a tent pad. The campground and trails are pet friendly, but as with most places in the southern part of the state be on the lookout for cacti.

If you are looking for a great spot to do some dispersed camping, this campground is for you. Only 2 miles from Royal Gorge and 11 miles from Cañon City. Plenty of easy to moderate difficulty trails for hiking and biking. Be sure to take Canyon Vista to the Summit Trail; you won’t be disappointed!

Cripple Creek Hospitality House & RV Park

Best rv park in Tellar County

Have spent summer 2021 here.  A few blocks from all the casinos (they all run shuttles).

Great staff, owners on site daily.  There is a food truck (Doc's) with GREAT food, permanently on site. Laundry on site, Shower & bathrooms.
The Cripple Creek Burros (free range about town) are here often. NOTE: the burros like our hummingbird feeders!
Open year round (limited rv sites open through winter)
Hotel on property was once the Cripple Creek Hospital and is "period restored."

I've spent seven summers in Colorado in my rv, Hospitality House and RV Park has been one of the best summers we've had.

32' 5th wheel, 50 amp. Reasonable long term rate.

Cotopaxi-Arkansas River KOA - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

    Nice looking campground

I did not stay here but pulled through on my way from Canon City to Beuna Vista. I had ATT coverage for cell and data. Looked very nice and right by the river.

    Falcon Meadow RV Campground

    Run down, but convenient

We wanted to be close enough to family, hiking and biking, and get a monthly rate during our stay this summer. This is apparently a struggle in the Colorado Springs area during the popular summer season.

The people who run the campground are an older couple and very nice, but somewhat disorganized. They were confused about our reservation, and accidentally overcharged us. No problem with a refund or our reservation in the end – just make sure you confirm everything if you decide to stay here.

The office/camp store is in disrepair. The park itself is a little run down, with a few recent looking upgrades mixed in (shower house, new chairs at each campsite). The worst part of being here IMO is the rigs that are obviously long term and look it, e.g., makeshift DIY winterization like plywood skirting.

Unless you get one of the spots in the back of the campground, all you see are these run down rigs. Not the mountains.

    It's depressing.

There's moderate road noise from Highway 24. A white noise machine helps here.

There are picnic tables at each site, on concrete slabs. The one at our site was unfortunately sitting in mud, because the slab is too low and everything drains there. It's also adjacent to some sort of open drain, which doesn't help.

The maintenance guy came and shoveled the mud off the slab after we let them know we were moving the picnic table out of the mud. The next day it rained and the mud was back. By then I realized I didn't want to spend time outside in this park, at least not at the site we're in.

    Colorado Campground

Great location for exploring Colorado Springs and the area

This Pike National Forest campground is run by Rocky Mountain Recreation which means you'll pay a $10 transaction fee if you make a reservation on recreation.gov. It looks like some sites are strictly walk-up. Check recreation.gov to see what's available, but you can just show up if there are available sites, pay at the self-pay station, and avoid the $10 transaction fee on recreation.gov.

Every site has a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets (rather fragrant as you walk by because of the vent pipes) and trash dumpsters are conveniently located throughout the campground as is potable water. There are no bear-proof lockers but locking up your food is a prudent move.

There are mostly back in sites but some pull through sites. Most of the pull through sites are partially protected from the road by a few tall pines and large rocks, but the pull through curve may be tight for some RVs. There are a few double sites (with double charge) if you need more space.

Manitou Lake on the edge of the campground is a popular fishing spot, and there's a trail around the lake.

Our site (#45) was rather close to the road, but the road noise was not bad throughout the park. Sites 40 through 44 are on a small loop and are probably the nicest sites even with a bit of road noise; these sites are near the trail to the lake.

In my opinion, there are two things that make this campground stand out: 1) The sites are large and not on top of each other. This campground could have twice as many sites, but it's nice that it doesn't. 2) It's a great location because you're close to Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, US Air Force Academy, Cripple Creek (only if you're into gambling), lots of hiking trails...and on and on. It's close to Colorado Springs and even closer to Woodland Park. If you want craft breweries and restaurants, you'll find plenty. We enjoyed being close to a larger city after being in lots of small towns. We loved the inexpensive food at Uchenna (Ethiopian and Mediterranean), Taste of Jerusalem, and Azada Mexican as well as craft beer (Fossil Craft Beer Company and Phantom Canyon Brewing Company with ginger wheat ale, Belgian ale aged on cherries, hazelnut coffee stout, coconut/chocolate porter, and on and on) in Colorado Springs. Beer is $3 during a 3 to 6 pm happy hour at Phantom Canyon....yes!

This campground is only open between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.

Guide to Cañon City

Cañon City sits at 5,332 feet elevation in central Colorado where the Arkansas River emerges from the Rocky Mountains. Summer temperatures often reach the high 80s with cooler nights dropping into the 50s. The surrounding area features a mix of desert canyon terrain and mountain woodlands, creating varied camping conditions between sites closer to town and those in higher elevations.

What to do

River access for rafting: Several campgrounds provide convenient access to Arkansas River rafting trips. The Royal Gorge RV Resort is positioned about 10 miles from town with "activities for all," according to Deirdre A., making it a strategic base camp for water adventures.

Hiking options: Mountaindale Cabin & RV Resort offers nearby hiking trails with "beautiful surroundings" per John K. This campground serves as a good starting point for exploring both mountain and canyon trails within a 30-minute drive.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Campgrounds in more secluded settings offer regular wildlife encounters. At Mountaindale Cabin & RV Resort, campers report seeing "deer wander around the campsites every morning and evening," making it ideal for nature photography and animal watching according to Lori C.

Hot springs access: The area's mineral hot springs are accessible from multiple campgrounds. "The hot tub was amazing!" notes one camper at Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins, which features "fire pits on the patio" that were "cozy and inviting" after a day of exploring.

What campers like

Laundry facilities: Several rv campgrounds near Cañon City feature laundry amenities. At Mountaindale, the "laundry with 4 washers & dryers" is noted as clean and well-maintained by reviewers who appreciate this convenience during extended stays.

Camp stores: Travelers appreciate on-site shopping options. Prospectors RV Resort features a "small store where one can buy any last minute items, such as marshmallows in our case," according to Tammy Z., with another reviewer mentioning it was "well stocked with firewood, camping supplies, a s'mores bar, cold drinks and lots of Colorado made items."

Pool amenities: Swimming options vary among Cañon City area campgrounds. Lance H. notes that "the pool and hot tub were fantastic in the hot days" at Royal Gorge RV Resort, providing welcomed relief during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 85°F.

Privacy between sites: Campground spacing differs significantly between properties. Lori C. describes her site at Mountaindale as "extremely spacious with room to park our truck to the side and still have a big yard," while Jeff & Nova B. enjoyed a "manicured spot ringed with pine trees."

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between Cañon City rv campgrounds. At Mountaindale Cabin & RV Resort, "there is no cell service for AT&T or T-Mobile, but you are able to do wifi calling with their WiFi and we streamed a movie one night," reports Lori C.

Road noise factors: Traffic noise affects some campgrounds more than others. Judy P. warns about Mountaindale: "Beginning early morning until late afternoon M-F, trucks roar up and down this road. If your spot is near the road, as ours was, it is very annoying-especially if you try to set outside."

Seasonal operations: While Royal Gorge RV Resort remains open year-round, Mountain View RV Resort operates from "April 17 to mid-October" according to their listing information, requiring advance planning for shoulder season visits.

Campground terrain: Many campgrounds feature terraced layouts due to the region's topography. "The sites are terraced so that everyone has a beautiful view," notes Lori C. about Mountaindale, which helps visitors understand site selection importance.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Campgrounds offering dedicated children's areas provide valuable entertainment. Royal Gorge RV Resort features a "playground [that] was very kid friendly and the giant jumping pillow was super fun!" according to a reviewer named "mich."

Easy access sites: Families with children benefit from specific site selections. At Haggards RV Campground, "all pull-through" sites make setup easier with children, and as Terry P. notes, there's "a nice dog park on-site. In fact, the best we've seen while traveling."

Bathroom facilities: Clean restroom access matters for families. Tammy Z. reports that at Royal Gorge RV Resort, "The bathhouse was the nicest I've ever seen at a campground," indicating superior facilities for family needs.

Swimming options: Pools provide essential recreation for children. The "heated pool" at Garden of the Gods RV Resort is described as "clean, comfortably warm, and a perfect way to relax after a day of hiking or exploring" by Dustin M.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: RV sites vary in levelness throughout the area. Diana B. mentions that at Royal Gorge RV Resort & Cabins, one "thing we didnt like is road coming in was a little wash pan. Hard on our older rig."

Shared utilities awareness: Some campgrounds have unusual hookup configurations. Jason F. notes that at Garden of the Gods RV Resort, "After getting setup I found out that I'd need to climb up the short retaining wall into my neighbors site to hookup our water hose."

Big rig considerations: Larger motorhomes have specific requirements at Cañon City rv campgrounds. Joel G. reports that Haggards offers "All pull-through" sites that can accommodate larger rigs, while Kevin H. notes "plenty of space" at the same location.

Reservation timing: RV spots fill quickly in peak season. Caroline D. suggests: "This campground is centrally located. We arrived around 5pm and were given a tight space," indicating arrival time impacts site assignments.
