Stunning views
Great location from Mesa Verde National Park. Cozy spots. Newer facilities. Fantastic views of the mesas and mountains!
Ancient Cedars Mesa Verde RV Park features a dedicated dog park with agility obstacles in its half-acre enclosed area for off-leash exercise. The park accommodates pets at all their accommodation types including tent sites, RV spots with full hookups, and pet-friendly cabins. Located directly across from Mesa Verde National Park entrance, this campground has one cabin specifically designated for guests with dogs. Pet owners appreciate the clean facilities and wide-ranging pet amenities. The staff is accommodating to campers with pets, though some reviewers note that spaces between sites can be tight. Facilities include clean showers, laundry, and a recreation center with pool table and games. Both Ancient Cedars and Mesa Verde RV Resort enforce leash requirements outside of designated dog areas.
Proximity to hiking trails makes these campgrounds ideal bases for active dog owners. Mesa Verde RV Resort, just half a mile from the national park entrance, provides maintained gravel sites with full hookups suitable for pets. Owners should be prepared for potential wildlife encounters when camping with dogs in this region. The surrounding area offers numerous outdoor activities where leashed dogs can accompany their owners. Free dispersed camping options on BLM land near the park boundary also allow pets, though these sites lack amenities like drinking water, hookups or toilets. Campers report the resort owners understand the meaning of hospitality, with daily site maintenance and thoughtful touches throughout the grounds. Weather conditions vary significantly by season, requiring preparation for pet comfort in both hot summer days and cool nights.
"This was such a nice spot super close to Mesa Verde national park. It was about a 5 minute drive from the park entrance."
"Super close to Mesa Verde National Park! And it's freeeee! The road to get the the sites is rutted out so you do need some clearance! We have a subaru impreza and it was fine! No amentinites.."

"And the people who camped next to us were considerate. The campground has lots of amenities. A log cabin (rec center) with pool, video games, TV with DVD library, books, and board games."
"Great location from Mesa Verde National Park. Cozy spots. Newer facilities. Fantastic views of the mesas and mountains!"
"However, this campground is really well maintained and a great place to stop if visiting Mesa Verde National Park. "
"It is close to the highway and you can hear the traffic but it’s nothing too bad, in my opinion. The sites seem pretty well spaced out for a little bit of privacy."
"This campsite is right outside of Mesa Verde and is easy to locate. Campsites are located along a dirt road and they are clearly marked."
"Tucked away from the highway and far enough from any big city, you want nature and stars at night? This is the place! We backed up to a huge green field."
"Park is very clean and quiet plus pet friendly. Lots of large Ponderosa pine for shade and scenery"

There's plenty of shade and much cooler than the NP campground.""Depending on the site, you have nice views through the trees to the surrounding mountains. Pick the western side for views. The reservoir is a nice size & peaceful."

Great location from Mesa Verde National Park. Cozy spots. Newer facilities. Fantastic views of the mesas and mountains!
Great camp site and park! Across the freeway from Mesa Verde National Park. Has all the stuff you need!
La Mesa RV is a quiet campground an easy drive away from Mesa Verde National Park. We were able to complete a contactless reservation after a quick phone call to check for availability (something I appreciate so much in the time of Covid). The leaves are changing and the weather has been beautiful this second week of October. The RV park has pretty trees changing. The spaces are pretty typical RV park - basically just a pleasant parking space with a table.
A beautiful location just across the road from Mesa Verde National Park. Spotless, modern bathrooms with enough showers and stalls to not have to wait. Not too huge that you get lost. Very nice people working the office and reservations. Easily accessible sites and hookups. We've been stayed twice in three years and it has remained the same well-maintained campground. One very nice large pool and two spas. Playground area as well. Laundry is super clean and reasonably priced.
Located less than 1 mile from Mesa Verde National Park entrance, this campground has wonderful owners who understand the meaning of hospitality! The sites are maintained daily and there are nice little touches throughout the campground, like potted plants at the pedestal of each site and site lights that can be turned off if one wishes (protect the dark sky).
There's a playground, pool and adults only spa, the office store has the little things one might have forgotten, there's a separate tent area, a well outfitted laundry room and clean showers. They also conveniently offer propane for sale.
The gravel site I was in was fairly level and had full hook ups. Free wi fi available. Not much privacy between spaces, but not sandwiched in like some "resorts". A little road noise and if the wind blew from a certain direction the leach field/pond scent would waft by, but overall a nice place to stay.
Beautiful campground. Right next to the West Dolores river which drowns out any road noise. Private land next door has a few beautiful horses. Very pet friendly too. Very close to attractions like Mesa Verde National Park. Would have given it 5 stars if there were showers.
Great campground! One interesting thing, the entire campground is gravel. The road, the sites, everything, there is no grass which was a little weird at first. However, this campground is really well maintained and a great place to stop if visiting Mesa Verde National Park. The KOA has a short trail that connects to the county dog park which was a HUGE bonus for us as we were traveling with an energetic puppy. The KOA overlooks mountains on all sides and the sunrises and sunsets were gorgeous. I was TERRIFIED of seeing snakes while there, and happy to report we saw none.
This campground is a peaceful place. The staff is pleasant to talk with, and all sites are very clean. The pool is heated to a warm 83 degrees. There is a children's playground and a three acre dog park. The bathrooms are very clean and the showers are nice after a long day hiking at Mesa Verde National Park which is located a few miles east of the campground. It should be noted the campground is a RJourney Campground now and not a KOA anymore. We enjoyed our three days RTT camping here. We recommend this campground., and will be happy to stay here again.
The Cortex/Mesa Verde KOA in Cortez, Colorado, was the best campground we stayed at (out of 10) on our #9parks12days road trip in June 2016. Not only was the site itself updated, it was the FIRST KOA we stayed at that had usable Wi-Fi - as in video streaming capabilities! When traveling with kids, this is such a HUGE amenity.
This campground has an updated playground, heated (seasonal) swimming pool, a 1-mile walking trail, dog park, and even tepees in addition to cabins for overnight camping. Not to mention, the campground is located a mere 15 minutes from the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. Other highlights: newer laundry facilities, of which we made use, and awesome mountain and mesa views right from your site.
Don't expect a ton of privacy - sites are very close together. The family next to ours had an outdoor living room set up that pretty much took the entire space between our RVs. However, the grounds were well-kept, and there was plenty of space to remove yourself from other people throughout the facility.
BLM dispersed camping provides free overnight options in designated areas near Mesa Verde National Park. Most free sites are located along dirt roads, offering basic camping without amenities. Sites typically accommodate tents and smaller RVs with existing fire rings, though seasonal fire restrictions may apply between May and October when wildfire danger is highest.
Hiking with dogs on nearby trails: When staying at Mesa Verde National Park Boundary (BLM Land), you can access hiking trails with your canine companion. "Road is typical blm rocky dirt road. I think a 2wd car could probally do it. No issue for suv or van. Verizon signal is okay, weak but can surf and watch videos," notes Johny R., which helps when planning day hikes in the area.
Off-leash dog exercise: Cortez, Mesa Verde KOA provides a spacious area for dogs to run. "I don't have a dog but I did notice a really nice dog area," states Sharon B., which is particularly valuable after long drives or between national park visits where dogs must remain leashed.
Fishing at Mancos Reservoir: Mancos State Park Campground offers fishing opportunities for rainbow trout and yellow perch. "Mancos State Park has no-wake boating and is well-known for fishing, especially rainbow trout, a few brownies and yellow perch," explains Robert G., making this a good option for campers seeking quiet water activities.
Proximity to Mesa Verde entrance: The BLM across from Mesa Verde provides free camping within minutes of the national park. "Very close to Mesa Verde, only a mile down the highway, definitely recommend this spot of visiting the park," shares Paul, highlighting the convenience for budget-conscious travelers.
Cell service for remote workers: Many campers appreciate the connectivity at dispersed sites. At Madden Peak Road, "Easy to get to spot with dispersed camping. Road is easily accessed with a low clearance car (Jetta in my case). Added bonus is good Verizon coverage," reports Bfree, which is important for those needing to stay connected.
Accessibility of dispersed sites: The designated camping areas on BLM land feature clearly marked sites. "This is a very accessible area. Spots are big and private. Clean 15 total spot so you're sure to find one," notes Ray L. about Mesa Verde National Park Boundary camping, making it easier for first-time dispersed campers.
Seasonal closures affect availability: Several dispersed camping areas close during winter and spring. "This place is closed Dec-April due to it being considered elk habitat. Also fairly muddy," warns Jason P. about BLM sites, while Sebastian notes, "Area is closed for wildlife management. There are no dispersed camping sites available near Mesa Verde until June-ish."
Navigation challenges: Getting to dispersed sites can be tricky. "For iPhone users use google maps. Or it will take you to a dead end private road," advises Aly E. about Chutes and Ladders Dispersed, preventing wasted time and frustration.
Weather and road conditions: Be prepared for variable weather and road quality. "It ended up raining overnight. We're from Minnesota so I had no idea the mud was going to be so horrible. My shoes were caked. The tent ended up super muddy. We were slipping and sliding on the road," shares Grace R. about camping at Chutes and Ladders.
Consider state park camping: Mancos State Park provides a more structured environment for families. "The lake is great for canoeing and fishing and the campground is small enough that older kids can be turned loose to enjoy themselves," recommends Maggie F., offering a balance of freedom and supervision.
Pack for temperature swings: The area experiences significant day-to-night temperature changes. "Weather conditions vary significantly by season, requiring preparation for pet comfort in both hot summer days and cool nights," with overnight temperatures potentially dropping into the 30s even in summer.
Wildlife awareness: Educate children about potential wildlife encounters. "I am actually writing this review from a place higher up the mountain, and I did see a bear this morning! It walked away when I opened my trunk, but it looked like it was walking over to check out my camp," reports Sara S. from Madden Peak Road dispersed camping.
Site selection for larger rigs: Choose appropriate sites based on your RV size. "Deep drain ditches between service road and sites. All sites are extremely uneven. Also the road and sites have sharp crushed shale stone. I have a 35 foot 5th RV and was way too big for this place," cautions Mark B. about Mesa Verde National Park Boundary camping.
Scout ahead when possible: For dispersed camping areas, checking sites before committing is advised. "It's a long dirt road that has a few big bumps, but if you're going slow it's passable in almost any vehicle. There are 13 official camping spots with plenty of room to accommodate a big rig. However, it's important to send a tow car down there to scout there is very little room to turn around at the end if all spots are full!" recommends Eat · See · RV L.
Hookup availability: Most pet-friendly RV parks near Mesa Verde offer full hookups. "Located directly across from Mesa Verde National Park entrance, this campground has one cabin specifically designated for guests with dogs," making it convenient for RVers traveling with pets who need reliable access to electricity for climate control.
