What to do
Mountain biking on multi-use trails: Golden Gate Canyon State Park features over 35 miles of trails with substantial elevation changes. "Golden Gate Canyon SP is absolutely gorgeous! We loved the experience at the park, the trails are great and the views are wonderful. The drive up can be a bit breathtaking, but it can be done!" according to a visitor at Deer Creek Campground.
Horseback riding at Bear Creek Lake Park: The park maintains stables where visitors can arrange guided rides. "They have archery, a beach, horse stables and ring, large lake to fish, clean bathrooms and courthouses," notes one camper at Indian Paintbrush Campground.
Paddleboarding at Chatfield State Park: The reservoir provides ample space for water activities from May through September. "Great for biking and all kinds of water sports. Laundry facility on each loop sites are spread out giving plenty of room between sites," shares a camper who frequents the park.
What campers like
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early risers at Chatfield State Park Campground often spot diverse wildlife. "Absolutely Love - My husband and I stayed in this beautiful campground in 2018 June. The wild life was beautiful, the facilities were clean, and the staff was friendly and helpful!" writes a visitor at Chatfield State Park.
Escape from city noise: Despite proximity to Denver, most parks offer noise buffers. "Not far outside of Estes Park, but far enough up the side of a mountain to enjoy the wilderness. Sites spaced nicely apart, very well maintained, great fire pits with an attached grill grate," explains a regular at Hermits Hollow Campground.
Late-season availability: Certain campgrounds remain accessible into autumn. "We stayed here for one night before heading back out on the road. This place is huge and has many amenities. It's very well maintained. The bathrooms were very clean and the showers were pay only and only with a bank card. $1.50 for a five minute shower."
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Popular equestrian-friendly campsites fill quickly during peak season. "If you want to get into the Park, suggest you go EARLY, EARLY, EARLY in the day. Traffic backs up all the way from the Entrance on Parker Rd to the Entrance Booth on weekends and holidays. Plan on an hour OR MORE to just get to the booth," advises a local at Cherry Creek State Park Campground.
Access road conditions: Several camping areas require appropriate vehicles. "You definitely need to know where you're going with this one, as the location on here isn't really even close. The trail getting in/out is fairly rough and uneven, so you'll need something with some sort of clearance."
Additional fees: Most parks charge separate entry fees beyond camping costs. "There is also an $11 day pass fee not included in your camping stay. There were full hookups. The sights were concrete and level. It was a little pricey, but we would stay again when visiting family, because there is definitely a lot to do!"
Tips for camping with families
Choose parks with amenities: Facilities with showers and flush toilets reduce stress with children. "Each campsite had a bear box, picnic table, and fire ring. There are plenty of trees for shade and some privacy, but you are still near other campers. You must pay for the day pass each day you camp, but there is a water fill up station which is nice."
Consider noise levels: Some parks experience traffic sounds at certain campsites. "This is one of our favorite spots to stay when visiting Denver area. Great for biking and all kinds of water sports. Laundry facility on each loop sites are spread out giving plenty of room between sites."
Seek less crowded weekday options: Most equestrian-friendly facilities have lighter use Monday-Thursday. "We stayed here during our visit to RMNP and it was perfect! Very conveniently located, only a short drive into Estes Park. Lots of trails for hiking and biking in the park."
Tips from RVers
Site selection for horse trailers: Secure sites with adequate space for towing vehicles. "Campground is very clean. Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out. Every campsite is a pull thru allowing you situate anywhere along the paved area to best suit your needs. Mostly level, fire rings, and very large metal picnic tables. Enormous amount of room," notes a visitor at Reverend's Ridge Campground.
Consider elevation for temperature planning: Higher elevation parks can experience wider temperature swings. "Our family loves this spot, the privacy and natural beauty all easily accessible for a 1 night trip for a family breaking in some unruly toddlers to the camping experience."
Advance planning for water access: Some sites require filling tanks before arrival. "The proximity to Denver is nice but I was surprised that the walk-in sites (29-35) were so close together. This section is probably only worth it if you can get site 34 or 35 which are the furthest back."
